Last weekend I caught up with three girlfriends who were visiting from NSW. We were wandering around Southbank and one of my friends said she had heard of a great Chinese place 'Bamboo basket'. Not having really eaten much Chinese, except for the takeaway variety, I was a little apprehensive. Taking a risk paid off, best lunch in ages! We basically ordered a dumpling and spring roll feast. They provide a handy little tick box menu so you can sample a range of duck, chicken, prawns and vegetable dumplings in almost any flavours you could want. Most items come in fours so it was perfect for our group. I loved the variety of having a sweet pork bun followed by a spicy prawn dumpling. The actual restaurant interior is gorgeous too. Lots of warn red hues, sparkling lights and comfortable seating. In summary, Bamboo Basket is delicious, different and decorative.

This is a very fashionably decorated restaurant that even though it is not similar to the pushcart Dimsum places found in Hong Kong, the food is great! Prices are a bit more costly than most places, but again comparing this to the United States and Hong Kong. The food was great! Everything comes out fresh in a reasonable amount of time. They have a good introductory variety of Dimsum but was hoping to find even more traditional Chinese dishes.

Top marks to the owners of Bamboo Basket for their effective marketing strategy of showcasing their skilled chefs authentic skills noodle and dumpling making skills through a large glass street windows. There's something very appealing about being given that glimpse into their offering, and I'm happy to announce that the taste lived up to my anticipation. I'm a huge fan of Asian dumplings -- from the steamed variety through to fried variants (like the delicious Japanese gyoza) -- and these guys do both very well. My partner is a vegetarian and she was happy to find a couple of vegetarian dumpling options, although both were essentially the same fillings (veges and tofu) either steamed or fried. The hand-made noodles are also delicious. My only criticism is that service was a little patchy. I was impressed by one of the senior waiters but another girl who served us wasn't particularly helpful. My partner requested a different dipping sauce than the standard one offered and her response seemed to suggest that it wasn't "the done thing". Eventually we got what we asked for (after some prodding) but they couldn't accommodate us with a sauce bowl. Instead she said we should adaptively use our chopstick rest (which had a recess in it). Overall though the food was delicious, fresh and unique enough that we were happy to overlook these service shortcomings. I'd definitely go back, but by the looks of the place on a Friday and Saturday night weekend visitors should prepare themselves for a queue-up.

Food really nice. A little greasy but nice and fresh. Quality ingredient used. Only reason for a 4 star my duck was very very dry. Fried rice was the best.

After reading a review that said service was patchy, I took no chances and ordered half a dozen dim sum and entree dishes as soon as we sat down. The steamed Prawn & Pork dumplings ($7.90, 4pcs) were delicious, as was the Pan Fried Beef Pancake. We also ordered a flatbread - Egg & Chive and that was really tasty, and Salt and Pepper Calamari - amazing! We kept ordered dishes as we slowly looked through the menu. And this worked really well for us. We were sharing all the food between the four of us, and this meant plates kept coming out at regular intervals. One of the main dishes we ordered from the Chef Special section was Jing Zhi Xiang Su Ji (Peking style crispy fried chicken fillet, $19.90), which was suggested to have with the steamed multi-grain bun. My husband didn't really like the chicken, but I thought it was delicious. Very crunchy and crispy and the Szechuan dipping sauce was addictive. I'm not sure if I really liked the steamed multi-grain bun though. It was just a soft, squishy bread roll. But a nice alternative to rice. However the highlight dish was the Cao Shou Gong La Mian (Stir fried hand pulled noodle with Chicken, $19.90). The noodles had a really fantastic texture. I wish I had watched the chefs hand pull the noodles. All up we spent $141 between 4 people (food and green tea, no alcohol) and we were thoroughly stuffed. Not the cheapest place, but I would definitely go back again.

The food was delicious but the customer service was pretty bad... had to wait at least 10 minutes before hailing down the waitress to order.

It appears quite new and will be a love affair for fans of New Shanghai who live locally. The restaurant is quite small which is probably why I missed it even though I travel past every day. It's within easy walking distance of the Coles carpark which should solve any non local's parking issues. The menu is quite compact but feasible and there are lunch specials at a smaller size. The dumplings section is basically the hardcore traditional favourites. Not as much choice as NS but should appease the regular dumpling eater. A variety of to-share dishes in the other section of the menu. We settled down to chive pancake, xiao long bao, pan stickers, griddled pork buns and a noodle dish. Seating is limited, I guess the tables could be moved, but you'd be looking at maybe 4-8 being comfortable. It is right open to Boundary Road, so it will be noisy with multiple buses and heavy car traffic. However, I say this would make a good casual dinner between family or friends. Service was fast and attentive. The interior design is quite schmick, the crockery is divine, but the Coke fridge a little jarring. :) They've gone to effort to make it look good, and the food is good enough. I hope it survives as some times one just needs a few dumplings, and a Chinese dumpling is not a Japanese gyoza (which West End has one of also). So please do me a favour and get into this place and keep it going, so I don't have to line up at NS or go over to Sunnybank for my fix.

They do tend to cram a lot of tables into the joint, but to experience the food and the 'Ben's Restaurant Experience' like it should be experienced, you need to go there on a Friday or Saturday night and stay past 9pm. They have KARAOKE people!!! It's so much fun and it makes the place come alive. From the hours of 9pm to 11:30pm on a Friday and Saturday night, you can get up there and try out your singing voice in front of the restaurant. You can pick your song and be a star, or be boo'd off stage. Hey listen, I got up there with my friend and we were terrible and people still cheered us on! I think the worse the singer you are, the more cheer you got. A verrrry good incentive for those shy ones! So yes, the food is very tasty, especially the deep fried beef strips in peking sauce... oh so yum. But visit for the karaoke... not many chinese restaurants do this... and it's worth a shot! Big smily face!

Our first tastes were all really excellent. Truffle pork fried dumplings were superb. Steak tartare filled a hankering for our raw food loving son. Liked the fried eggplant though it was literally dripping oil with every bite. Excellent prawn toasts...chili wontons a little clunky but also very good. Our only real quibble was with the barramundi. We were leaning towards the kung pao chicken and the beef with peppers but figured we were in Australia and should try something special. The barramundi honestly missed the mark. Hard to eat with tons of bones that looked EXACTLY the same as the enoki mushrooms underneath the dish, making it nearly impossible to distinguish bone from mushroom. The broth was SUPER bland. Yes, it had heat from the chilies but no seasoning in the broth whatsoever. Remarkably flavorless. Other mains were more successful - duck chow mein, tofu, roast duck all great. All in all, a very good choice. Just skip the barramundi.

Despite the higher prices, we decided to come to Donna Chang bc we were craving dumplings and Peking duck. We ordered scallop & prawn wontons, Moreton Bay bug dumplings, Peking duck and fried eggplant. First of all, the wontons were a great way to start. They were packed and the sauce wasn't too spicy. I saved the sauce for other items during the meal. Secondarily, the Bay bugs were like slipper lobsters and had a nice texture. The best item was the duck. The meat was moist and the skin was nice & crispy. Lastly, the fried eggplant was light & airy. Regarding the ambiance, DC is located inside an old hotel. The decor is old skool, but the menu is modern. Will, a fellow Filipino was super nice and explained the menu to us. He also recommended the wontons. Later a nice Filipina took great care of us. If you don't mind spending a little bit, DC does the trick. They have very good food & service in a classy environment.
