Ballyhalbert is interesting as it used to be a raf and usaf base in the second world war and its main runway faced out to the Irish sea, I used to drive my dads car up and down the runway long before the caravan park became as developed as it is now and long before I was of legal age to drive. There's remains of one of the control towers and the shooting range too. Ballyhalbert is an unusual location for a caravan park as it sits on the opposite side of the road from the beach which is mostly rocks and shingle and its a bit out of it, I think its more suitable for people of a certain age and millisle offers more for younger people. There's plenty of facilities onsite but sandycove would be my preference over all. Ballyhalbert does stir the imagination though of hurricanes taking of to defend the sky's and American bombers arriving in to help launch attacks on Germany. A lot of history to have in a caravan park. read more
