The first hole is one of the best opening holes in golf hitting over the Machrihanish beach. Even if you do take on too much beach you usually still have a shot from the firm sand. Retire to the clubhouse to sample the superb local Springbank malt. You will definitely want to come back to play it again.

So there I was, behaving in the manner of a surly teenager at a family dinner when the friendly coach turned up, equipped us with clubs and balls and had us teeing off before I had the chance to even tut or sigh. And here's the shock, I actually really enjoyed it. Bob totally knew his stuff, and had a great way of teaching us the technical bits without making the kids' eyes glaze over. Not easy to pull off but he did it. We had a full hour of tuition at the fab price of £20 for the four of us. Considering I was quoted four times that at another club, that's excellent value. If you already know what you are doing, you can also just turn up and play and as you are right on the coast, the views are truly spectacular. I was so fired up by my first lesson that the husband had to restrain me from buying the full outfit and a set of clubs in the on-site shop. Moderation never has been my friend.

The course is so beautiful, so scenic, she never got bored. The other great thing is you can play the Championship-level course. They offered the opportunity to play the course 4 days after the tourney, and with championship tees for £190. Awesome. I wished we had stayed longer, as you can get a whole week in the summer for £150. Fall and spring is £90 and winter is £60. Since it only gets into the mid 40s in the winter, I'll be back. Also, the Club did a great job with the Irish Open. The links course was immaculate and held up in the wind and the constant drizzle of rain.
