The fact that I couldn't draw a bucket of water didn't stop me wandering in to see what it is all about and to see if maybe they did a toddlers session or something to distract junior. Turns out they don't cater for toddlers (and I really can't blame them) but they do a whole range of courses including short ones for children over the summer. The ethos seems to be using art as a medium for helping children and adults cope with life as a whole - teaching patience and planning while guiding you through. I don't know how usual it is to have this sort of ethos but I like the idea, might be something to look at for the cold winter months!

I did a creative writing course here some time ago and it is really a beautiful building - so old and historic and in a lovely part of town too, Parnell Square. The course itself that I took, however, wasn't all that great. All the students were my age and older, ie 30 and 40-somethings, but the tutor was all of 20, which I didn't approve of. She was a published writer yes, but of children's books, and I'm sure she knew what she was talking about up to a point, but she was also still completing her degree in college. I just felt that someone that young wasn't quite ready to be teaching a creative writing class. I didn't discuss this with the rest of the people on the course, but I suspect a lot of them had similar opinions as attendance was quite bad for the term.

This is a training college for people wanting to enter the hotel and bar trade. It is located in…read morethe city centre and is very accessible.The courses are three months in lenght and you are entitled to a weekly wage, which works out at about 200 euro a week. The college itself, is very impressive as it has a fully functioning kitchen. Staff are very professional and helpful. Every week they hold open interviews for their courses. They advise to come early and ring ahead to confirm the interview day.

The building is well maintened as well as the equipement (computers etc). I don't speak the language…read moremyself but from an arts point of view I am always happen to know that I can get access to a country's cultural and political publications. This is their mission statement, "The Goethe-Institut Ireland organises and supports a wide spectrum of cultural events which present German culture abroad and promote the intercultural dialogue." My friend uses it from time to time as a resource for her teachings. I know that they also offer German classes.

The Goethe Institute- or Institut if you prefer the proper German name- is the German equivalent of…read morethe Alliance Francaise, i.e. a place where you can learn about German culture and also take language classes. Their library is open to the public and you can get German books and newspapers here. The Institut also provides a structure for German classes if you happen to teach German. However, the staff aren't the nicest or most efficient at times- after 9 weeks and three reminders I am still waiting for a response to an email I sent them.
