This convent slash art gallery feels like one of the really arty, pretty, regional-Australia places in that film. Came here for a wedding, and the place was good when I was sober, and supermodel stunning when I was less so, which was most of the night and a big chunk of the early morning. The chapel is sweet and intimate, and a door leads straight into the reception area so nobody gets lost, and then there's sprawling, resplendent gardens that wind up to a lookout / makeout spot, and the whole building is riddled with fancy pants artworks, from sculptures to nude paintings to mega-arty things that I couldn't recognise but desired nonetheless. "One art, please!" Don't know anyone getting married? Kick back in the cafe and have a wander and pretend you're in some eccentric millionaire's mansion.

There are very few things in life better than an institution doing its very best to do something properly. Sovereign Hill's attention to detail and commitment to immerse the visitor in a true experience is nothing short of obsessive. The staff are dressed appropriately and they speak to one another appropriate to the era. The buildings are almost nail perfect replicas of real buildings that appeared on the main road and yet they smell 100 years old. The shops only serve authentic goods... there is no refridgeration... bottles are in ice and there is saw dust on the floors. The sweet shop only sells sweets made up the street. There are demonstrations and activities that will, I promise you, fill your day. This is the real deal and if you live in Australia or visiting from overseas you must see this. They deserve your patronage.

The new owners Simon & Lee have managed to keep everything that was great (local produce, beautiful setting) and make it better than ever. With a wonderful energy and zeal for outstanding customer service they make you feel like a close friend who's been invited to their estate to share good times and great food (did I mention the pizza is our all time favorite). Bookings aren't essential but highly recommended to ensure you don't miss out and I would be sure to allow a few hours to really relax and let the beauty of the place sink in... can't recommend this place highly enough. This place is certainly no exception, and they have a few trams that they use on the weekends, which trundle along the lake, or at least a part of the way where the tracks are still sitting. Of course, they also have some trams in the workshop that they are still working on, but in a way this is certainly a rather delightful place, and I do really appreciate the fact that they have retained some of the heritage in Ballarat. Now, if only they would actually start laying proper tram tracks down.

These days, even since the bypass was built, this doesn't really happen anymore, but it is still pretty impressive. In fact the way they set it up is really cool. As you drive into Ballarat from Adelaide you hit the Avenue of Honour, which has a tree for every resident of Ballarat who died in the Great War. Then as you approach the town, you come upon this awesome arch which stretches across the road. There are also some memorial gardens nearby, as well as a shrine. Honestly, it is pretty impressive, and certainly stands the test of time.
