I got in early and each of the staff members I worked with was fantastic. I was in and out in what seemed like no time. The longest part of the visit was waiting for the eye drops to do their thing and for my eyes to dilate. Can't say enough good things about how this last visit went... The only bad thing. I felt from the very beginning our doctor never really listened or cared for my son - but was too afraid to switch doctors since everyone told me they were the best. a few years into his care- his bad eye got scratched again and this time it got infected. I was desperate to get him into a specialist and his doctor at Wolfe couldn't get him in for another month. I knew we couldn't wait. I started calling around trying to get him in to see someone right away. PHYSICIANS eye clinic was first on my list and they had a cancellation and was able to get my son in the next day. from the front desk , to the nurse taking him back- to the doctor / s ( we have seen 2 at this clinic ) I could tell - we had finally landed in a place that cared. his primary doctor is Mrs. Amspaugh - she is a mom too , on top of being a doctor and you can tell she really cares. she is super smart - but does't treat you any less , like at WOLFE. I know her schedule was packed for the next few weeks but she literally would get my son in everyday on her lunch hour to follow up with his eye. after a few weeks under her care, she went on vacation and left us with her co/worker - Mr. Hassan - who is just as smart and kind. we feel so grateful to have stumbled upon this office , filled with a staff of very smart , kind , helpful - caring doctors & staff. I always thought my previous optometrist was excellent and did a good job. After one visit with Dr. Koenen, I learned I was completely wrong. My old optometrist had been under prescribing my contacts for years!! I talking freaking years!! Dr. Koenen corrected my prescription by more than a diopter!! When I left his office after my first visit, I just froze outside staring at the brick building across the street. I could actually see the texture of the bricks! It was so beautiful. I had no idea things could be so clear and in focus so far away, by which I mean across the street!!! I have had glasses since 3rd grade and contacts since 7th grade so I have always accepted having poor vision; however, I never knew how poor I was actually seeing until I went to Dr. Koenen. Dr. Koenen is very thorough in his exams. There are lots of tests and questions, all of which makes him very accurate. He also gives very helpful advice about eye care and eye wear. I was having some dry eye problems a few years ago, and I asked him what he recommended. I was so grateful that his first response was some additional supplements (fish oil) and some other physical techniques. His first response was NOT a prescription. In this day, it is such a relief to have a doctor address the origin of the problem instead of just treating the symptoms. He did say that if those techniques didn't work, there are other medical options. He also offers a procedure that takes a panoramic photo of your eye. It's called a screening retinal photo. Apparently, this is a much more accurate method than the typical white light viewing during the exam because he can see your entire eye all at once instead of small sections at a time. It does cost ~$39 for both eyes and is typically not covered by insurance. With my poor vision, I always get these images because you only have two eyes, and they don't grow back! He also does the blue dot glaucoma test instead of the air puff test, which is apparently less accurate and more uncomfortable for the patients. I know I would rather have a couple of drops in my eyes and a blue dot than a puff of air in my eyes! He does recommend checking your eyes every year just like a physical with your family doctor. The office staff is also great. Megan and Shawn are both opticians who are very helpful and friendly. Their website is a little dated but that's ok. It has all of the information you would ever need. Despite their website's appearance, they are still pretty modern. They have the first-time patient forms online. Also, they do text message and/or email reminder/confirmation notices. Regarding the purchase of contacts, I always buy contacts through Dr. Koenen. Their contacts are only about a 5% markup, which is worth it for the following reasons: 1) you know you are getting fresh lenses not old ones that have been sitting in a warehouse, 2) they can be delivered to the office so they are not sitting outside your house exposed to the elements (severe weather is very bad for contacts), and 3) they can give you some trial contacts at the office to last until your order arrives. Also, Dr. Koenen is current with the latest types of contacts. I used to use the 2 week contacts but Dr. Koenen recommended that I switch to the one-day contacts. Initially, I was reluctant because they are more expensive lenses ($190 for a 3 month supply - both eyes), and I was suspicious that he was just trying to sell me more expensive contacts. Since I had had such good experiences in the past, I decided to try the new lenses. After one day of using the new lenses, I learned I was wrong again. These lenses are amazing!!! It hardly feels like you are wearing contacts. I have even had some long days when I got into bed but had to get back out because I forgot I was still wearing contacts! They are that comfortable! Regarding glasses purchase, I have not purchased glasses here before. Since I primarily wear contacts, I did not want to spend a lot on backup frames. At the time of my first visit, most of the frames were pricy ($250 and up), which would be in addition to the lenses. When I was last there, they did have some economy frames. I am currently getting a quote from here and a few other places to see what is the best option for me. Here, they do have ultra thin, polarized lenses so that will be a deciding factor too. Overall, an excellent place to go for eye care. I am a customer for life.

I moved to Iowa recently and needed a new eye doctor. My last eye doctor was in Chicago and he was…read morevery up-to-date on the latest technology in eye care systems, technology and products. I wanted something comparable in Iowa, especially an office that had something called Optomap. Optomap is a machine that actually captures images of your retina without having to do dilation. I've been opting to have Optomap images instead of dilation since 2015 and it's been wonderful. So I went to Optopmap.com to locate offices near my area that had the Optomap machine. Vision Park Family Eye care had it! So after doing my research and reading reviews for the Urbandale location I opted to make an appt here and I'm very happy with my decision. Adam was the assistant for Dr. Larson and he was very smart and asked me pointed questions about my eye health. I told Adam I wanted Optomap and he made it happen. He took me through the machines that measured my vision perception, eye pressure, and Optomap. He was also very good at explaining everything to me step-by-step and telling me when and where I'd be hearing noise from a machine so I wasn't startled. He also was nice enough to clean my old glasses and tighten the screws on them! Dr. Larson was fantastic. He explained everything to me very thoroughly, especially since my eyes are now transitioning into a different phase in life where my eye muscles are slower in focusing my vision. He listened to me and honored my request to go back to my previous contact lens brand. We went over the the results of my Optomap and he explained what each thing (spots, veins, shadows) on the image meant in regards to my health. He explained what I would see on the image if I had macular degeneration, high blood pressure, rips/damage in my eyes, etc. In my opinion, this is a much more thorough and accurate way for any optometrist to view your eye health in its ENTIRETY and also the best way to show you visually how your eye looks and what can be done to improve your eye health. Although it is about $39 to do, Optomap is better than dilating your eye because the doctor can only see segments of your eye at a time when its dilated (like puzzle pieces), while Optomap sees your whole eye (the back of it) all at one time (like the whole puzzle put together). It's also a good way to see the history of your eye health (because the images are saved) so if something different appears it can be addressed quickly. Plus it took less than a minute to do and I had no side effects like I would have with dilating. After my visit with Dr. Larson, I went to check out their glasses frames. Another person (I didn't catch her name but she was very nice and helpful) helped me with my glasses and explained to me all the options I could get with my frames and lenses with my insurance (including adding the option to add anti-glare, transition lenses, thinning the lenses (for me because I have a high prescription), blue-light blockers, etc). Their frame selection was very large and I felt very comfortable trying them on and discussing my options. She measured the distance between my eyes and also measured where my pupils fell within the eye glass lens so my vision in my new glasses would be prefect. She also was very patient with me when I asked her my out-of-pocket costs for everything that insurance wouldn't cover. At checkout, I had asked for itemized receipts for my visit (so I could understand what I had paid for and what insurance was paying) and it was not a problem. I was even given a form to claim a rebate that came with my contact lenses. For convenience, my contact lenses will be mailed straight to my home. And my eye glasses will be ready in 7-10 business days for pick up. This office is fantastic and I'm thankful to have found them! They made my move from Chicago to Iowa and the need to find a new eye doctor seamless.
