I love Indonesian restaurants! And this one had so many great things on the menu, I had to order a lot to try everything, and make my friend try everything. Some things were awesome (nasi goreng, peanut sauce, satay, lapis legit) and some things were not. I'm guessing it was just an off night for their beef rendang, which is their most popular dish. It was dry and overcooked and really inedible. But we had so much food, it didn't matter. We definitely enjoyed it and would have loved to go back and try more. Big portions! a humble establishment in a popular area of london. stopped by on a weekday at 12:30 for lunch and the restaurant had plenty of space. service was quick. we asked for the lunch menu which is an excellent deal. i got the vegetable soup as a starter but i think they gave me prawn soup instead. spicier and saltier than i expected. the kari ayam was wonderful for a cold day. it's not too spicy but still warming and rich in flavor. portions are a bit lacking in vegetables. for the price point though, its a definite to-go read more

Decided to check this place out because it had a tripadvisor sticker on the window. The restaurant was empty around 5 when I went. The owner greeted me and was super friendly! Unfortunately the dish I got (its was a curry chicken?) was mediocre. Maybe I ordered one of the unpopular dishes but I didn't really like it. The chicken was kinda dry and crispy. I was hoping for something tender, especially since it is a curry dish. I will have to try out this place one more time and hopefully I'll get something better. read more

Two words for you ladies and gents... set menu. It's a new cuisine that I haven't tried before and this was the only way to do it. I went with friends who have been to Malaysia and they assured me that this is authentic Indo-Malay. It's really tasty and a great choice if you like Thai but aren't as much of a fan of the spice. Nope, this place doesn't look much and the service although, very friendly is not the most efficient. But all the same I really quite like this place and since discovering it I have been back a few times. Venture out of Leicester square and Covent Garden and try something different on the side streets of London, that's where the good stuff is at. Don't waste your calories on generic Shake shack and Five Guys. Bali Bali has a great lunch offer of Indonesian and Malaysian food where you can get appetizer and main course for only £8.5 (mainly rice based dishes like nasi goreng). Available every day until 2.30pm. Pay a pound more and you get an appetizer and a choice of prawn dishes, chicken coconut curry, squid, beef and more. Add another pound and you get dessert included (choice of ice cream and banana fritters). Where can you get a flavorful three course meal for £10.5? The prawn soup was really good, yellow coconut based where you can taste the shredded pieces and you get three prawns. Pretty good size for the price. The spring roll is filled with veg, chicken and prawn. For main course we had chicken curry and sambal squid. Curry sauce was similar to the soup. The squid wasn't rubbery and lightly fried with plenty of sambal. It's literally just sambal and oil, which for me though I don't mind. The banana fritters had a very light batter, and thin drizzle of syrup, which is good. I like that they include the rice in the lunch deal, I hate it when places charge £2-3 extra for our beloved staple called rice. read more

Something that I would suggest for people who are not familiar with Indonesian food. The food is simple and tasted just okay. Service is excellent. Honestly, I would've felt a little uncomfortable coming in and ordering if I were not with an Indonesian person! There's just so much to chose from, and it seems like if you're not Indonesian everything kind of blurs together. My friend definitely agreed that their menu could be streamlined a bit. Besides having him order our food to share, service was quick and reliable. And of course the food was pretty good, but it wasn't too inspiring. Restaurant just away from the main hub of Shaftesbury Avenue / Soho. Turned up without a booking on an early Saturday evening. The restaurant did not have much room but we were not turned away and room found. I noticed that this was the case for pretty much anyone turning out so at one point, many people standing waiting to be seated that it disturbs those dining especially when some bends across you while you are eating to ask the other diner what they are eating. That aside, food was nice, I have been here many times for lunch in the past and have always enjoyed the food. Great for a casual no fuss place but up market enough to feel like a little treat. read more

Fantastic meal at Bali Bali. Having lived in Indonesia for 3yrs have had some experience with the cuisine. We ordered the martabak, rendang, Soto ayam, nasi goreng, kamgkung, sambal ayam, acar and sambal hijau udang. The stand outs were the sambal ayam and udang and the kangkung. Delicious! Rendang was also very good and everyone has their own version they prefer. I personally prefer a spicier and dryer version but I'm sure there are many who would prefer this slightly sweeter and wetter version. Acar was covered in peanut sauce which I wasn't expecting. Personally prefer the plain pickled version without peanut sauce. Kids loved the nasi goreng which they finished so quickly I didn't get to try it. Soto ayam also good but needs lime and a little more complexity (that's what makes Soto ayam the best...when you get multiple flavors in one bite). The owner also gave us batik face masks which we LOVED. Definitely worth a visit or three. read more

This place is excellent and probably one of the best places to eat in central London (if you like Malay food). It's always packed but you're only likely to have a 15 min wait if you haven't booked and there are plenty of pubs nearby in which to kill the time. The food comes out hot and fast, the staff are friendly, efficent and numerous and the desserts are frozen solid which is brilliant if you just had something spicy. Oh and yes the other reviewers are right... foods are authentically hot so buyer beware. =) I always go for the soy squid and rice with a Punky or sorbet to follow but there's an incredible array of authentic food to choose from. Bali Bali was a fun destination while a group of us that grew up in Indonesia were in England for a wedding. They throw in a few thai and chinese dishes for those who need something familiar, but much of the menu really is Indonesian. The highlight for me was the soto ayam, which was delicious and I've missed so much. Located near the Covent Garden neighbourhood, this was a brilliant find for rijstaffel (rice table), or what I like to refer to as a Dutch version of tapas of Indonesian dishes. The drawback is that you need to order for a minimum of two people, so this doubles your cost at the onset. Their "special rijsttafel" is about 18.50 GBP per person (multiply by 2 people) and their regular "rijsttafel" is 16.50 per person. The difference was that the "special" version had a fish dish. The fish actually had too many bones, so even though I ordered the special version, it was the one dish which we left mostly untouched. However, the other seven dishes were very good., including an additional basket of shrimp crackers with a dippng sauce (see uploaded photo). Next time, I probably will go with the regular rijsttafel. The service was very nice as they thought they recognised me from before. Whence they learnt I had never eaten there before, they continued to be friendly and nice. I work very close to this place and when I'm not counting calories I'll be in here grabbing a nasi goreng or mee hoon goreng to take back to the office for lunch. They have 14 lunch options for £5.50 to take away and in this respect it's one of the best value places in the West End. It's also very tasty stuff and in the sub zero temperatures of a London spring it's a better option than most of the Earlham Street hawkers a few foot steps away. read more

We have been for the first time in Bali Bali Restaurant and ordered the Rijstafel for two persons and paid 17 GBP per person. The restaurant was a nice place where you felt fine. The staff was friendly and asked if everything is ok and also gave advices when you ordered. The also offer a set menu for 9.95 GBP if you order before 7:30 pm. Altogether I would give 4 1/2 stars because it is not quite as good as in Bali but probably one of the best Asian in London as far as we tried. read more

Having come back from travelling in South East Asia, with my wonderful memories of my trip I was keen to try out this restaurant. Alike my travelling experiences, I was greeted with friendly smiling faces and looked forward to the food. Unfortunately the overall experience wasn't amazing but with the rain outside and the busy traffic I think it was understandable. It was decent enough food for the money and I probably would come back here. It is a different menu than the bog standard ones found in China town and for this I would recommend it. Went there last night with boyfriend and my parents. The food was delicious and very modestly priced. Unfortunately, the restaurant itself isn't as nice. The waiter was nervous and just a bit clueless. I'm sure it was his first night or something, we aren't fussy people and we encouraged him. The music was awful chart hits on repeat, doesn't do anything for the ambiance. Lucky we were in good company and ignored it after a while. Definitely worth visiting, really yummy food. read more
