Despite this, the visit felt extremely brief and I was quickly told I needed to seek care elsewhere without much discussion of potential next steps, differential diagnoses, or interim treatment options. My photos and prior patch testing results were not meaningfully reviewed. What upset me most was the delivery and bedside manner. Difficult or complex cases sometimes do require referral to larger centers, and I understand that. However, I left feeling dismissed rather than supported. At one point, while I was still reclined and partially undressed from the exam, I was essentially being told there was nothing further she would do to help me locally. When I became visibly upset during the appointment, she responded by asking, "What do you want me to do?" At that point, I did not feel guided, heard, or cared for as a patient dealing with an ongoing and distressing condition. The referral process itself also felt inconsistent and confusing. The seriousness of my case was emphasized by comparing the referral to a primary care physician sending someone to oncology. However, when I asked how to actually pursue the referral, I was simply told there was a 1-800 number and that "there are commercials for it all the time, and it's only 4 hours from here." That contrast made the interaction feel dismissive rather than coordinated or supportive. I left the appointment angry, emotional, and defeated. Patients dealing with chronic visible skin conditions are often already vulnerable, and compassion and communication matter just as much as medical expertise.
