To start this review off, I just wanted to say that I was always on the fence with what martial arts to study/train. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was a thing I've heard about but never really knew where to go. Finally, my wife found this place and spoke to a man named, Steve, who is running the Fishtown HQ. She told me about the Sat/Sun classes and said I could start a trial to see what it was all about. (I was so nervous lol) Saturday morning, I woke up late at 10:20am (Their Muay Thai level 1 Class started at 10am) and I was already making excuses. I told her, "I'm already late and showing how undisciplined I am" and my insecurities was showing. She looked right into my soul and told me, "get off your ass and just go. Leave now." Thus began my sweet journey of training every weekend (with the exception of important days off) at Balance Studios. (Side note: the instructors totally understand when people are late but personally I don't like to be late at all. Self Discipline is important in general but overall they're very understanding of everyone's busy schedules.) I am obsessed with Muay Thai and BJJ/GJJ because of what Balance Studios offers. I am a weekend warrior (only train on the weekends) and because they have three different locations, I am able to have different options for my training needs. After training here for a year now (specifically at the Fishtown HQ) I have to say that I've felt like I've become a part of a family with many more family members (who train on the weekdays) that I still have to get to know. I am more on the introverted side and this place has made me feel comfortable approaching people as well as enjoying my time. Everyone is here to train for their own purposes and this is just a great place to start your journey on becoming a better you. I now want to train harder, smarter, better so that I can one day become an instructor myself (and whatever my heart desires along with this journey.) I want to compete in BJJ competitions, I want to compete in Muay thai bouts, and I want to overall live and breathe the essence of Martial Arts. I am amazed that this love I have created a new life and purpose for me. I originally wanted to become a filmmaker to make an impact based on my troubled past, and here I am now on a mission to understanding everything I've learned so far. I'm working my way of growing deeper into the realm of Martial arts so that I can make an impact in this way. To touch the lives of others the way the instructors/students have touched mines. Speaking of, I train with experienced instructors on the weekends as the schedule is a bit hard to train with the Migliarese Brothers (who are the owners/Founders of Balance studios) I have trained a little bit with both and follow their teachings on their social media pages and I have to say, They are inspiring hard working gentlemen! Overall, If you're looking for -a clean place to train with zero judgement from others (for the most part because most people here are awesome and humble.) -losing weight (I lost 30lb from 175lb to 145lb with changing my diet as well) -learning discipline, respect, and dedication -learning about yourself -being more active -finding a home for GJJ/MMA/Self Defense This is the place for you! Just give it a try (I believe there's a 7 day trial but call or email to ask.) and judge for yourself. It's the least you can do to take the next step on becoming a better you.

Iconic brothers of Phila. They are the real deal. I wouldn't go anywhere else to learn BJJ.

I'm so grateful to the friend that persisted and invited me again. This specific YogaSix has a wonderful owner who is so lovely and welcoming. The studio is located on the 5th floor of a building that is almost tucked away on 17th street. It can be easy to miss, and if you arrive early in the morning then the front door may be locked. Use the keypad to find YogaSix in the directory and call them, then they'll buzz you up. I've tried every class offering and have also done the monthly Sound Bath, which was lovely. The instructors are great and offer plenty of modifications and options for all levels. The hot room is definitely something to get used to but it is personally my favorite part. Actually... the cold eucalyptus towel after the workout is my favorite part but the warm room is #2. If you are looking for hot yoga, are visiting town and need to get a class in, or if you are just interested in trying something new then YogaSix is for you!

Experienced and skillful teaching and the only place to practice authentic ashtanga in Philadelphia.read more

Though I've been practicing yoga for several years, I've only been studying ashtanga a couple…read moremonths. I make an 80 mile round trip drive to come to this shala. Is it worth it, you bet ya!! Okay, so parking can be a pain depending on time of day, you have no choice but to climb three flights of stairs before you even get to practice AND it isn't exactly a new, building (paint's chipping, floor boards are chipped and taped down in places). So, what is appealing about this place? Instruction is top notch. David is no longer teaching at the shala on a regular basis, but you can still train with him at workshops and intensives. Elizabeth Sitzler is now the primary teacher and she is knowledgable, genuine and caring. The sense of community at the shala is overwhelming. I have felt welcome from the moment I joined and at no point have I felt otherwise. Even during the intensive that I just did, where I was one of the newest people and hardly knew anyone, I was welcomed in with warmth and love. I don't know what the previous person was talking about with the shala having a "competitive atmosphere". Perhaps she was MAKING her own personal practice competitive. Each person is doing their own practice at their own pace and shouldn't even be looking around at others. I have never gotten this impression at all in the couple months I have been here. Overall, I would highly recommend AYS. Visitors in Philly who have an established ashtanga practice should not hesitate to drop in. In addition, those looking to start an ashtanga practice should look at their beginner program- where you go four days a week for a month.
