Not the best gelato of my life, I have to be sincere. We…read morecame here some weeks ago, 'cause it was a really (and unbelievable) warm afternoon in Amsterdam and I was craving for an ice-cream. The place is really nice, clean and so bright, and it was full of happy kids with their families. As Italian, what I immediately noticed was the perfect queue: if you enter in a traditional Italian gelateria, everyone is in front of the servery (or whatever it is called) choosing and looking at the gelato varieties. Instead, reading the flavour and picking them from that distance for me is difficult :). Anyway, I tried pistachio and lemon, but nothing special for what I'm used to. I personally don't like when you, as a customer, could not taste a sample in a gelateria of what you'll pay for. That said, I don't mean that someone has to taste everything... Lastly, doesn't really matter the size of the cups or the ice-cream cone, because the gelato balls are similar and small for a final gelato not even so generous.. I'll give 3 stars, because I am.

The staff is friendly and they have a good selection of ice cream flavors, all of which look delicious. I tried their vanilla (a little custard-y instead of vanilla bean-y, but not totally like the grocery store cheap stuff) and citron (a little intense but also not too much) on a nice old-fashioned cone, and I'm sure they will be packed once it starts being warm outside. My husband prefers their vanilla and stracciatella ice cream over all others because they use real vanilla beans instead of vanilla extract. It's not the best ice cream I've ever had, but it is pretty good. And they have tables and chairs and lots of room inside, so it will be a great place to hide out from the sun in the summer.

In particular the sausage broodje which is just about the best thing I've eaten in awhile. Near as I can tell this may have been part of a chain that originated in the 60s, and the interior looks like maybe it hasn't been upgraded much since, but that's part of the charm. Have stopped in twice and they're sure to get my business a few more times while I'm here. The broodje and a cup of coffee set me back something like 3 Euro and was fine. Had a nice chat with the lady working the place by herself, also who may have been here since they opened but can't be sure. I went to 2-3 other places that definitely have the decor and presentation down far better but no one has matched that first bite I can get at Bakker Bert! I'll be back.

All afternoon there were only one or two other people sitting in the cafe and everyone else who filtered through was getting stuff for pick up or take away. The staff was pretty laid back, and they made the food relatively quickly. I ordered a B.L.A.T. (bacon lettuce avocado tomato) on a roll of my choice, and that was well balanced and well put together. It looked so good my 2 year old grabbed my sandwich for herself halfway through. My 2 year old demolished a few of their croissants, leaving a big mess, so I take it they were good. I later had a "rice slice", which is a rice krispie treat which has been defiled with raisins and orange pieces. In my book that is blasphemous, because it disturbs the homeostatic enjoyment of a solid layer of rice krispies, butter and marshmallow. But I guess that is the style around here. They offer free babyccinos (soy milk, flavored syrup and foamed milk on top), so I ordered one for my daughter to go along with my cappuccino. It was very cute, but my daughter did not like it at all. Oh well, at least it was free. My cappuccino was good, but I was surprised it didn't come with a packet of sugar or a cookie or a piece of chocolate or anything. I later had a large mokka, and that had a pleasant amount of sweetness, with real chocolate chunks swimming around at the bottom. Overall I would come back here again for a gezellig snack or coffee. The music was good, the staff didn't care if you stayed or went, or if your 2 year old dances around, and the food and drinks are good. There is not much in terms of seating, but if you can come when it's semi-empty, it's a chill place to sit and watch the trams and bicycles and the rest of the world go by.
