I wouldn't be surprised if this is the oldest business in Mere Green. It's been here for years and,…read moreas such, has a firm and loyal fan base. The place is bright and clean and the service is friendly and efficient. I've seen better menus at other chippies but I knew what I wanted. A bit of everything! My hubby agreed to go along with my choices so I ordered us a large bag of chips and then a piece of Roe, a mini fish, a scallop, a saveloy and a battered sausage. Trust me if you break it down there really isn't that much there. Yes we're naughty! Remember that if you're ordering certain things from the menu you might need to let the staff know straight away so they can start cooking it. One more thing to be aware of - Sutton chippy prices can seem quite high to the uninitiated. The quality of food on offer though does reflect the prices you'll pay. Parking here is a bloody nightmare! It's always been a problem, so the best way around it is it to park a few minutes away in Sainsbury's car park and just walk up. The car park across the road is very small and is often congested, I wouldn't suggest parking here as you may not be able to get out!

A mainstay of commercial Four Oaks for decades, this chippy simply IS Mere Green. As businesses…read morecome and go, particularly, in the wake of a doomed regeneration bid for the leafy area, this enterprise remains a constant. It is tried and trusted, a fixture of hundreds of local people's weekly routines, stretching back well into the 80s. Queues are not uncommon at this clean, bright, no-nonsense venue. Parking may be an issue, as double yellow lines on the residential street on which it's based can make nipping in and out tricky. A recently added pedestrian crossing, a bus route, and off-street parking for bank customers on a small patch of land opposite compound the difficulty, but the truth is, people have been coping for years. I know a few first-time customers who have remarked on the price being slightly more than they're used to. But, if their complaint isn't empty, two things must be considered: The business is located in Birmingham's most economically-buoyant ward and also, fresh fish simply isn't comparable as a takeaway product with pizza or fast-food burgers. Forget little parcels, or wrapping being undone only to give way to a measly tray, this is your classic, sizeable, how-it-used-to-be serving. The smell is enough to drive you crackers.

Hot, fat potatoes dusted in salt, splashed with vinegar, lightly battered cod or haddock, crisp with a melt in the mouth texture. Mmmm, it's no wonder much of the nation is obese with places like this around making it impossible to resist the tempting smells bellowing out, sucked into the atmosphere by the fryers extraction fans. The smell should be bottled and sold as air-freshener! There's no need to visit the sea-side to find the best fish 'n' chips around, nip over to Streetly and this shop will give any sea-fronted fryer a definite run for its money. For those concerned about their fatty arteries, Streetly Fish Bar now offers cholesterol free frying, nice touch. And they're proud to extend their working week by now opening on a Sunday such is the demand.

I had a couple of friends around for a nameless reality TV final and it was a toss up between ordering a curry or saving a bit of money and popping to the chippy. The chippy will be quicker...we thought. I went with roe and chips and my two friends went with cod and chips. Easy, popular orders...you would think. We queued for a good 10 minutes and when we finally got served we were told we would have to wait 25 minutes for the fish. Considering it was peak time on a Saturday evening we expected them to have such a popular choice ready, or at least only a few minutes away from being ready - like most chippies I know. Nobody lifted an eyelid so it seemed this is normal here. Eventually when it was ready, we legged it home and got ready to stuff ourselves with rubbish TV and fish and chips. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. The chips were nearly cold and the fish just didn't taste very good. I'd like to think that we just caught them on a bad night as it was very busy, but the lack of customer service gives me little enthusiasm to go again. Again...Streetly Fish Bar need to remember why they set out as a chippy in the first place. Apologising is a good start or at best, give us a smile!

Finally Mere Green has a second chippy. However, on visiting you could be forgiven for thinking…read moreyou've got your Mere Green maths wrong. This is like two chippies in one. Part old fashioned traditional England. Part sun-kissed Mediterranean flavours. When I arrived with my husband early on a Tuesday evening there was already a substantial queue. I wondered whether this could be attributed in part to the sheer varieties of foods on sale. With a menu so comprehensive, customers take time to select their choices and the staff take their time to prepare the orders. However, it's nice to go to a chippy where food doesn't feel like it's being turned out on a production line. In any case, we took advantage of the queues by marvelling at the freshly prepared Kofta Kebabs, Grilled Corn, Mixed Mediterranean Veg and Fresh Greek Salads. Despite these choices, we needed to check they could do our favourites well, first. So we went down the English seaside route going for traditional fish and chips. The Prime Scottish Cod was huge and gorgeous and at £4.30 was reasonably priced in an area known for expensive chippies. A side of breaded mushrooms was an unusual treat from the quirky menu. This is a great addition to Mere Green. The only question is, is it a pie and sausage night or an evening for fresh lamb shish with taramasalata?

Once inside I immediately noticed that this wasn't just any old chippy. It was a Mediterranean Grill too. Freshly cooked Kebabs on an open flame! Once I had stopped salivating at the menu and decided which of the delicious kebabs would suit my gut full of beer my order went in. My girlfriend, who wasn't hungry at all, was forced to order the same. After waiting around ten minutes for my meat to be freshly cooked I was asked the questions which are music to my ears... salad and chilli sauce? Shortly after that I was clutching an empty wrapper. Nuff said!
