Houston and the rest of the country could use more places like The Ronald McDonald House. I…read morerecently went on a tour of the facility as a potential volunteer and I was blown away by what they do. The Ronald McDonald House is an extremely low cost ($25/day) facility for families of pediatric patients undergoing treatment in the Texas Medical Center. The facility provides housing to patients who are undergoing treatment at several hospital including MD Anderson, Texas Children's, Memorial Hermann, etc... Priority housing is given to patients undergoing cancer treatment, but many different families stay here. This is so much more than a long term hotel. There are community rooms, computer access, playrooms, outdoor playgrounds, community kitchens, laundry facilities, and more! They even have special kitchens for transplant patients to store their food. Most days of the week, volunteers bring and serve food to families staying here. Best part of the whole place? The house dog, Mogie. Mogie was running around, playing with kids, and was putting a smile on everyone's face. Pet therapy is so important for patients and their families. Mogie was so cute, I wanted to scoop him up and bring him home with me! For $175 a week, a family can stay here, get free shuttle service to/from hospitals, and enjoy many free catered meals. I can't imagine how important a facility like this is when you are from out of town and your family is devastated by a life threatening medical diagnosis. I can't wait to start volunteering here! They deliver 7,000 to 8,000 lunch bags a day to children across the Houston area. Located in The Heights, Kids' Meals is in a shopping center with a bunch of other businesses. Since some entrances were closed, it was a little confusing figuring out how to get in at first. But, once you're in, parking is easy. After arriving, an employee at Kids' Meals spent a couple of minutes training us. Kids' Meals makes bagged lunches for kids in need. Since you're making meals, they require that you wear a hat or hair net. After training, we moved on to the facility where they had an assembly line system going. There were several different jobs and mine was to place a sandwich in a bag and then place the completed lunch in a large box. After 60 lunches filled the box, I also served as the muscle (a role I always gladly accept ;)). The boxes were then moved to a tray. I spent two hours or so volunteering here and it was a great experience. Giving back to the community is so important and Kids' Meals is one of the many great non-profits here in Houston. I would gladly volunteer here again.

This organization should be ashamed of their selves! My family is not from Houston but a situation…read morehappened with one of my very close relatives that currently lives there. It took me days to encourage this family member to use her local resources to get some help with a situation that happened to her. She even had a terrible suicidal episode that morning because of her PTSD from what happened to her. She finally took my advice and contacted this organization 24/7 hotline. She was laughed at on the phone and was discouraged from reporting her incident. The night shift "supervisor" scheduled her an appointment with a counselor on November 10th to receive some help. That's 10 days later from the date of the phone call. Is that protocol? Is that how you are taught to assist your community members? I decided to call the hotline to speak with a supervisor, but I was met with the same lady. She refused to even provide her name to me so I can properly report her conduct on the phone. I'm not having to stay up tonight to sooth my relative from her experience and encourage to still report her incident. I hope no one has this experience and I hope this organization is shut down for a lack of knowledge and care for their community members. One word, DISGUSTING.

After working as a sub at the holly hall safe house and bringing classroom supplies, gifts and…read moreclothing donations, I saw the need and the benefit that community donations bring to the population served specifically at this location. After my assignment, I was told to bring the car load full of quality donations of children's books and clothing collected from homes in Bellaire (very affluent community in Houston). So I did. Or at least tried to. I walked into the main offices on Waugh and tho I was standing right at the reception window, 18" from some woman sorting mail, I was never acknowledged and it wasn't until another woman came in who was then helped before me, was I told in a dismissively contentious way that only new stuff was accepted. I wasn't asked if my stuff was new, despite 4 full boxes being exactly that, so I took the stuff to The Cottage Shop that serves The Women's Home instead. In addition, my mother tried to partner her non-profit Daughter's of the British Empire with this organization and attempted on 6 different occasions via phone email and letters to offer this group a lump sum cash distribution from their annual fundraisers which would have been over $5,000 but never once received any follow up. As a teacher in Houston ISDvery familiar with the social services offered to my students, I will never again attempt to work with or help this organization for its totally offensive treatment of me and it's disregard of cash donors.

I was invited to come here for one of their legal classes. It was very nice to see how accommodating they are towards their community. This particular class consisted of mainly seniors. They were able to get an understanding of how to protect their assets and/or pass along to their love ones. As you walk in they have lots of brochures and business cards of all kinds of assistance.

BEAR is a wonderful community resource 501(c)3 organization dedicated to helping foster children in…read moreHarris County. Specifically making sure that children who are removed from their homes have everything they need for the first 48 hours after placement, and then providing ongoing support to foster families in other ways. One of their big drives is during Christmas and making sure that every foster child has presents waiting for them under the tree, and if you stop and think what Christmas presents for 16,000 children look like you might realize why they need hundreds of volunteers for 3 weeks of the year! I've only volunteered during the last few Christmas seasons but if you want to give back to an organization that really strives to put the needs of some of the most vulnerable children in our city first, BEAR is an easy choice. They have online and in-person options for support, and they need volunteers and donors to keep them afloat every year- they are not funded by taxes. The people running the place are friendly, helpful, and you can tell they really care about kids. Definitely recommend checking them out if you're looking for a way to give back to your community!

We were looking for a donation alternative to Goodwill for reasons, and the pick up dates weren't an option for us. After loading everything into the truck and driving to the address on the AOH website, it appears there is no such donation station. Proprietors at the address had never heard of it. Goodwill wins again. I don't know why it has to be so difficult to give things away to a charity.
