I've dreamt of taking my dogs to San Francisco and getting a photo of them with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background for almost a decade. I finally got it done on my California coast road trip this summer and Baker Beach was the perfect location. I would have preferred a sunnier day but I thought the fog was also fitting for San Francisco. We stopped by around 10:30 am in early July and it was still fairly overcast with just a bit of blue sky peeking through the clouds. Being from San Diego, I must say that a beach day in San Francisco requires more layers. But the chill in the air didn't detract too much from the experience. For some reason, the lower parking lot was blocked off so we had to park in the upper lot and walk down to the beach. There was plenty of parking although I did notice that it had filled up quite a bit by the time we left an hour later. We noticed the signs warning about hiding your valuables because of a high break-in rate. We weren't 100% sure of the dog rules at the beach as we didn't see any signs. We met up with a coworker who is a local though and she said that dogs could be off leash. The waves were pretty intense though so I ended up putting my water loving pug back on the leash because I was afraid she would get swept out to sea, especially since there were signs warning of riptides. read more

Rain or shine, Baker Beach never disappoints. My best friend and I took a little road trip over to SF for the weekend. I put together a little picnic for us and we decided to stop at Baker Beach to enjoy it. Parking was fairly easy. We weren't expecting to find a spot so quickly, but it all worked out. The weather wasn't as ideal as we had hoped, but the fog and gloom didn't stop anyone from going to Baker Beach! Be sure to bring layers to bundle up when the weather isn't too pretty! Pro tip: if you're bringing food with you, be extra careful of the sea gulls! They really will invade your space if they see food. read more

I'll never forget the first time I discovered Baker Beach. I was hiking the Coastal Trail with my daughter-- that's right, my daughter, who was probably about nine years old at the time. "Mom, why isn't that man wearing any clothes?" "I don't know, sweetie, let's just not look at him." But then there was another naked man.. and another... Oh my gosh, is this... a nude beach? This is gonna be a fun one to explain to her dad... Yeah, I had no idea that there was a nude beach in SF, until we stumbled upon it by accident. Luckily, we quickly distracted ourselves by climbing the Sand Ladder, and got out of there. Baker Beach offers a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge, which is probably less than half a mile away. The views of nature are stunning. The views of the people are something else. I would definitely recommend checking it out, but don't bring your kids, like I accidentally did. Or, if you do, make sure you stick to the south side of the beach, since it is the north side that's technically "clothing optional." Four stars instead of five, because there should be signs warning people from hundreds of yards away as they walk in. "Hey, you're approaching a nude beach. If you have kids with you, you might want to turn around." A heads up would have been nice. Pro tip from the Parks Conservancy website: Keep an eye out for harbor porpoises. Aside from the aforementioned Coastal Trail, other nearby trails to this one include the Battery Chamberlain Trail and the Lobos Creek Trail. read more

Baker Beach is very popular among tourists and locals!!! Because of that, parking is somewhat difficult. But that kinda goes with popular places. But this place has picturesque views of the Golden Gate Bridge, I've seen a lot of photo shoots here because of the background. There is a part of this beach where people get their nakedness on, although the times I've been here have been rather chilly, so I've yet to see any of that. I didn't even know all of that until after I went, lol. I've never seen this beach not crowded, the views alone are worth a visit!!! read more

** The following review reflects my experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** Gee, the last time I was here, and indeed it's been a while, there were a whole lotta naked people. Not the frolicking, Esalen-vibe kinda naked people, more like the no-gym, no-worries kinda naked people. But that was late on an unexpectedly balmy Sunday afternoon. I was back early on a predictably cold Saturday morning, and the naked people must've been hiding in their burrows. In their place were a lotta guys with fishing poles casting their lines against the crashing waves (photo: https://bit.ly/3rNVUMm). They were fully clothed, gratefully. Despite the postcard-ready panoramas, I don't come here often since driving here since Seacliff seems like another world to me. However, I was waiting for my car to be serviced in the Inner Richmond and got ambitious walking on the Mountain Lake Trail. Eventually the trail ends here at the beach where the Golden Gate Bridge beckons. I rarely go to Baker Beach. When I do, however, I always think to myself I should come here more often. I usually am on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, by Fort Point. I like Baker Beach as a secluded, quieter spot, and in my experience it is not as windswept as elsewhere on the water (that is not to say it is SoCal). My understanding is it is a nudist venue. I'm fine with that. I believe to the extent anyone is threatened, it is voyeurs and scolds who are menacing to the sunbathers, not those who are without clothing toward their attired brethren. read more

You get to enjoy the beautiful views of the ocean, Presidio area, and the Golden Gate Bridge, so it's a good spot for taking Instagram pics. There's a parking spot right next to the beach, so that's cool. A lot of people bring their dogs for walks; very pet friendly area. It's a good place for running; you get so much cardio running in the dry or wet sand. If you're bringing kids, just know that people like to soak up their VITAMIN Ds naked, so just be cool with it LoL. Overall Baker Beach is a must go spot if you're visiting SF! read more

Baker Beach is definitely a popular beach among tourists and locals alike. It has beautiful views of the famous Golden Gate Bridge and is also dog friendly. On this beach, north of Lobos Creek is where dogs are able to go off leash, romp and play and have a good time. But on the south side of Lobos Creek, dogs are allowed but must be on a leash. But please note that the beach side that is closest to the bridge is a clothing optional area. I did not see any naked bodies (I was also not by that part of the beach) but figured I would make mention in case you see one and were not expecting to. The water here is rather cold, and the waves are really strong, so it isn't recommended to go swimming. According to locals, this beach isn't normally that busy during the weekday. However, when I came here with my husband and our little girl dog on a Wednesday around 4:30 pm, there were quite a lot of people (but wasn't too crowded so you can still social distance). We came here to meet some friends (who are locals) with their dogs and were recommended to park at the lot by the restrooms, since this is the parking closest to the off leash dog beach area. We were here for about 2 hours and were able to get some great photos of the sunset of the ocean and also of the famous bridge in the background. This is definitely a beautiful beach to do a photo shoot. I think our little girl dog had fun playing with her friends and both my husband and I enjoyed ourselves. I would definitely recommend checking out this beach if you haven't before and would like some great shots of the Golden Gate Bridge in the background of your photos. Please note that parking is free and there are more than one parking lot. But if you wish to park closest to the dog beach area, then it will be by the restrooms (there are both regular bathrooms and portapotties here. I did not use either). There are plenty of people on this side of the beach did not have dogs so it's okay if you didn't travel with your pet if you would still like a photo of the bridge. Consider bringing a sweater or jacket if you decide to come close to sunset because it gets rather cold. read more

Baker Beach is more of a local's hang out than the 5x -10x larger Ocean Beach to the south, where the Beach Chalet and Cliff House and Sutro Bath Ruins near Lands End attracts tour buses and Touristas. Unlike the open expanse to the wind and waves of Ocean Beach in the Richmond and Sunset districts divided by Golden Gate Park, Baker Beach is nestled amongst the winding roads of the sprawling Presidio of San Francisco, in a little cove like strip just off the luxurious mansions at the toney Sea Cliff and Lake Street neighborhoods of multi-million dollar properties. It's a much narrower strip of sand and surf, facing the Pacific Ocean, but west of the Golden Gate Bridge, so it has a stunning and less known (by tourists) view back at the western, ocean side of the GGB, rather than the much more photographed bayside. Their is a parking lot of 20 - 30 slots, and perhaps 20 - 30 more on the road leading up to it. Baker Beach has long been known as a clothing optional beach by locals. But if you come in June and July, when the hot San Joaquin Valley heat sucks in the Marine layer from the Pacific Ocean across the Bay, you may freeze off your little boys and girls here. Locals know that September-October brings the Indian summer to the Bay Area, and this would be a better time to go au naturel. This being San Francisco, however, you tourists from the Midwest shouldn't expect to see Lola and Candy's D cup Girls titillating you like they used to in the strip clubs in North Beach in the '60s. You are more likely to see Dick, Peter, or the full Monty package from the Castro dangling in the sun and breeze, like you often do at many random parades or events anywhere else in San Francisco. There is a pack of half a dozen old white men who roam about in a lazy cruising effort, at any given event in SF, or just randomly. I once saw a man fully buck naked in the FiDi downtown, carrying only a briefcase. I guess when discretion became the better part of valor, he may have had his "briefs" in his case. I don't think there any facilities at Baker Beach, and perhaps none nearby, so plan accordingly and pack what you need. Unless you're buck naked in your birthday suit. read more

Baker Beach is very popular! It's a very walkable beach with great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands. Also got popular for engagement photo shoots. It's open 24 hours and the parking is close and is free. We came here on a clear and sunny Saturday . Was very cold once we got out the car but the view and beauty was worth it! We walked all the way down close enough to the water and soon and we got there the sun started setting. We experienced one of the most beautiful sunsets. So serene and soo liberating!. We stayed for only 20 mins . Can't believe it was my first time here but look forward to coming back soon. As we left the Golden Gate Bridge was lighting up . That was pretty magical read more

With no bathing suits in tow for this trip (weather I felt, didn't say "beach time") during our Labor Day 2019 weekend, hubs, my daughter and I still wanted to take in the beach scene and see how these folks do it up in San Francisco. We'd gotten some sandwiches from Boudin with hopes of finding a park bench to lounge a bit, be mesmerized by the water and munch away. Which we did. We also had gotten a gorgeous view of the Golden Gate Bridge down yonder. But that wasn't the only view we got. Turns out, this one brotha had given my 25 year old daughter props for her fade haircut- and a minute after, starts walking down the ramp then drops his swim shorts.... Just. Like. That. Because if it's flesh you want to embrace, come to Baker- which by the looks of it, this section is a nude beach. Listen... Everyone we saw were simply too content to spare a glance in anybody's general direction. But if you want to come with your 2 piece, that's fine too. read more

Was a beautiful day at the beach early on Sunday morning! Got here around 9 o'clock and was very surprised at how many people already here, due to the extreme heat in the inland area, and to my surprise it was in the mid 80s and sunny! No fog! Plenty of people wearing masks, And social distancing. Make sure to park in north lot for ease of access and bathrooms if need be. By noon the gates to the parking lots are closed and lots of walking is needed. read more

Good place to see the Golden Gate Bridge from a bit of a distance. I walked about 3/4 mile on the sand with shoes until we got to the rock formations. Its still a pretty good distance to the bridge, but its a nice walk. I parked in a cul-de-sac in a nice neighborhood. There was steps going down to the sand and it was marked as "Baker Beach". There also appeared to be parking lot a short distance away. If you want to get really close to the bridge, its going to be a long walk and I'm not sure its even possible. For that view, Fort Point National Historic site is a better option. read more

May or may not be the most iconic beach in San Francisco due to its amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge. If you keep walking, it seems like you could almost touch the bridge. The first time I came here, Friday afternoon, it was a not a good idea at all. We ended up circling around for almost an hour because there was so much traffic and no parking whatsoever. The second time though, our experience was much better. I came on a Wednesday afternoon and was so happy that there were so many parking spaces. Went down to the beach and was glad that there were not make spiky objects in the sand as it is with many beaches in the Bay Area. The views are absolutely gorgeous and there was quite a bit of people there soaking up the sun. I do have to say that in terms of the quietness of the beach, I prefer maybe the ones closer to Santa Cruz as there are less people. In terms of the views of the Golden Gate Bridge, I feel like Chrissy Fields has a slightly better view. Nonetheless, the beach is gorgeous and I will definitely come back on a random weekday afternoon or else the parking will be absolutely horrendous. read more

Been living here in SF for three decades and never been here. Such an amazing place. Dog friendly. Not sure if dog allowed off leashed, but all the furbabies were happily galloping at the beach on their own. Such a happy place! After numerous pictures, we climbed up the 320 Sand Ladder stairs up to Washington Street, crossed it and climbed up to Immigrant Point Look Out. Trails are well maintained and inter connected with each others. Tmobile doesnt have strong signal here so, pay attention to where you are going. Just kidding, I'm sure you wont get lost. I'm really bad with my left and right, thus the warning. There are porta potty and real bathrooms, you choose! I chose porta potty today because I was adventurous. Just kidding, I did not see the real restroom and I had to go. But it was well maintained. read more

I prefer to sunbathe at this beach over Ocean beach. Ocean beach can get very cold and windy while Baker beach is the opposite. On hot sunny days this beach can get very popular. It has a big parking lot and when it's full beach goers will park on El Camino Del Mar. Muni bus 28 will also bring you to the parking lot. Further up the beach towards the view of the Golden Gate Bridge is clothing optional. You will find nude bathers of all ages. Please respect them. No gawking, and absolutely no taking photos or videos. There is also no restrooms on that side. The water is cold and salty. I frequent this beach a lot. Such a gorgeous beach with fluffy sand and beautiful views ! We stopped at the beach to watch the foggy sunset on New Year's Day, it was very cold and windy but still pretty crowded. Although we were getting really cold, it was nice to take advantage of the views of the bridge and pet all the cute puppies running around. I definitely recommend this spot for a day time picnic with wine and snacks, just be prepared for heavy crowds and lots of pups running around. But totally perfect if that's your thing ! There are a few port-o-potties that are not very well maintained but maybe due to the heavy crowds/ usages, but not the end of the world. read more

We've lived in the Bay Area for a few years and just visited Baker Beach for a family photo session. We were pleasantly surprised by the amazing view of the Golden Gate Bridge as we arrived. There are 2 parking lots from which you can easily reach the beach via a staircase. The parking lot wasn't too busy early in the morning and there was an officer on patrol, so I assume there has been some break ins etc recently (be sure to bring your valuables with you!). The beach is a long stretch which is great for larger crowds of folks to be able to spread out or walk without bumping into others. Definitely a must-see view of the GG Bridge! read more

5 stars for 12 plus crazy years of good times here! What can I say...I started coming here when you could walk or swim around the rocks at the far left end of the beach and have your own little beach to yourself. Those days are long gone due to mother natures rival, global warming. This is one of a few beaches in the Bay area that gets enough sunshine to lay out or swim here. The far right side closest to the bridge is also a nude beach. Good times! The beach is clean, its never really jam packed, the stairs up top are a good workout/view point, the views of the bridge and surrounding area from the beach are crazy. Its a very relaxing place. I've unknowingly swam with dolphins here, thought it was a shark, and almost walked on water. True story. Ive flown kites, watched the sun set, and watched the sun rise as boats sailed by. I've introduced many locals and out of towners to this beach and in the process created so many wild, crazy and fun memories. Its a must see beach in the SF Bay area. I'd reccomend anyone visit this beach, but stay clear of the side closest to the bridge if you aren't in the mood for natural bodies in all their glory. Cheers & 5 beers Bakers Beach! read more

Came here with Alana and Nadine just as the sun was going down the horizon. We immediately took one of the free parking spots and literally jumped out of the car to witness the beautiful sunset. It looks a favorite spot for locals and tourists. It's clean and well maintained. Lots of folks sitting in the sandy beach admiring the beautiful view of sunset. It's also a great place to view the Golden Gate Bridge. Just not sure when is the best time to visit. Probably during summertime. We visited during the month of September on a day when it was bloody windy and cold. Even though I wanted to see the sunset in its entirety, I wasn't able to. I wasn't properly dressed and felt the chill so I had to run back to the car after snapping some pics and watch sunset from there. But still grateful to be able to see the scenic sunset and hoping to revisit soon. read more

Wow! This is place is truly Golden! I mean how can you not give this place 5 stars just with the beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the ocean water with the mountainous terrain backdrop. It's really is a sweet escape within the city and makes you feel like you are really in nature. You can soak up the sun or fog and just relax. This is great to bring people who are guests or tourist , when you need alone time or coming with your famIly and friends. I see tons of people picnicking. Sunset in San Francisco...at the beach!!! Ann S. suggested that we go here...and I'm so glad that we took her advice! Free beach parking is a treat in Northern California! Thank you! I have to pay for beach parking in Southern California! LOL! We enjoyed a perfect view of the Golden Gate Bridge! Wow...the man made reddish orange color was a great contrast to the deep blue natural sky... It was so clear... no fog! The freezing, constant wind created a wind chill factor. My car thermometer read 61 degrees, but it felt like 50! My fingers turned into popsicles! Brrr! I zipped up my jacket and covered my neck like a scarf! I wished that I had some gloves! The glorious sun was setting slowly while painting the sky a warm yellowish orange... The light bounced off the ocean's surface towards us and asked us to return! We will! read more

Awesome beach for the mature!! Soft sands, cool water, big waves and lots of people really all hangin' out and loose!! This is my first time here and I can tell I will be back...for a swim on a hot day or just to take a stroll. I thought this place would be super packed with people but it wasn't for a warm day. It does get windy here though so perfect on a warm day! I loved walking on the beach! The sand was soft. The beach was pretty clean. I didn't step on lot of shells and not hurting my feet. There are some sections of stairs going to the beach. Be careful of loose wood steps. I did not see any ramp for handicap people to go to the beach though. This beach is NOT for kids unless you are willing to explain to your kids why they don't have clothes on! ONLY in SF!! LOL I am pretty open about it but some may not. I was taking pictures and saw men and women naked! I guess the people didn't really care?! That's cool! Just don't be stocking people. That's not cool! Great beach to hang out on a hot day if your from the east bay and to see the Golden Gate Bridge!! Parking is free in the area but will usually be full but there is $5 parking at the employee parking on weekends only. Their are trails too to take a stroll to get your steps for the day, too.
