Nice mosque, but they don't take domestic violence seriously at all, in my experience. I had…read morereached out for help getting out of my situation, which is unsafe; since I wasn't "being hit", I don't think they took it as a priority. I'm still waiting to hear back from them.
Edit: I have reached out to this mosque about thirty times. I emailed the administrator for weeks, and they never got back to me.
I had asked for help finding resources for food, shelter, jobs, etc., because I was (and still am) living in an abusive environment. The imam said that he'd like to check in with me to see how I was doing on a regular basis. That still hasn't happened.
I'm not sure if me being Black has anything to do with me not getting a response back. However, one of the (Arab!) sisters' husband went on a long business trip a few months back, and the mosque set up a meal train for her and her children, alhamdulilah. I was left to fend for myself.
When I had met with the imam in June he essentially interrogated me, asking me what I had done for myself to get myself out of this situation. When I told him everything I had done, he laughed and said something along the lines of, "Good. You know, if you weren't doing anything to help yourself, I wouldn't feel comfortable helping you."
Wallahi, he told me to cook meals for my abuser to see if that helped our "relationship." His prescription for abuse was more chores and housework and left it at that. Again, like I said, nobody at the mosque has gotten back to me yet. I met with them June of 2026. It is now October of that same year.
If you are Black, a new revert with lots of "unorthodox" questions, or queer, I would seriously reconsider attending this masjid. It's a shame. Islam should be for everyone, not just the people whose situations are easy enough to handle. It's to the point where I've been thinking of taking legal action for racial discrimination and denial of domestic violence.
I wish instead of having to fight in court, Black women were regarded as equally deserving of care and support. Astaghfirullah.
