The Mainz train station is pretty standard for Europe. We had to catch a very early train to the…read moreairport for our flight home and overall I'd say we had an average experience here. The ticketing was fairly frustrating, but we'd grown accustomed to that as the electronic ticketing system in Germany, despite there being an English option, is not at all easy to navigate unless you are familiar with it. By this time in our trip we knew what to expect and had built in some time to navigate it and had a vague idea of what we needed so it went fairly well, but with the same little computer hiccups we'd come to expect from the system. The overall train station was, in my opinion, a bit grimy, and well loved, but it had some little cafes that were open early which was a win, and some fairly clean restrooms, though you had to go all the way to the basement for them. Overall, not a lot to report here. It could be modernized, cleaned up a bit, and improved, but it gets the job done.

Situated on the western edge of town along the Rhine, the train station UNESCO World Heritage Site…read more This is not because the building is aesthetically pleasing; although the neoclassical building has been restored, the station seems really run down. The station is, however, small and quaint. There are 2 tracks, and the DB staffs person keeps the main hall locked until 7 minutes before your train. The doors are then unlocked, and the staffs person leads passengers across the tracks to the platform. Kind of a fun experience. The station was designed by Heinrich Velde of Diez and built in 1854-1856. The stationmaster's accommodation is said to be on the floor above the main hall. The station is served by the Stadt-Express service 10 of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund - rmv, a clean, smoke-free, convenient regional service.

You can't go out on the platform to wait for your train they keep you locked inside and will come out a minute before the train arrives and let's everyone out. If you are here, you likely already purchased your tickets as Rudesheim is a pretty touristy, yet picturesque town in the Rhineland. Because of the size it's immensely easy to navigate (one platform!), but I do recommend you have tickets purchased before you get here as like I said it's small, and staff is very limited. There might be restrooms, but I didn't see any. It's moderately clean overall, but it honestly is pretty bare bones. It gets the job done, but there isn't really much to write home about here. No amenities etc.
