Little did ywe know that it was soon to take over the world!!! I've even seen a Subway in northern Iceland. It's scary. And at the same time, I'm not quite sure how I feel about them. Subway masquerades as something which is good for us, it's even mentioned in diet plans and on the Atkins, but I'm personally not convinced. Yes, the food is fresh (and pretty tastey, darn it) but I'm not too sure about the calories content. What they always get you on are all those cheese, sauces, cookies and fizzy drinks... after that lot who cares if there was a little bit of salad in the roll or not. Oh well, stick to the 6 inch sub of the day, and you'll not go too far wrong.

You know how it is after alcohol; you are suddenly ravenous and must have food IMMEDIATELY. The only problem was that the guy was closing up and most of the ingredients had been used up. He was running on empty on the old ingredients front. But did he let that minor detail stop him? Hell no! The man made us a Subway from lettuce, mayonnaise and Cool Original Doritos crisps! A couple of second in the whizzy heater thing and bingo - a Subway original was born. I can't tell if it was really delicious, but it sure tasted good at the time.

I think it's because I sense that a tussle of 'David and Goliath' proportions is playing itself out on a microcosmic level, here in this tiny pocket of commercial interest, on an otherwise residential road. The big boys seem to be squeezing the small independents until their pips squeak. There's a Tesco's as well as this branch of Subway merrily undercutting their immediate rivals, which comprise of a couple of great little take-away's and a corner convenience store. I'm going to leave Tesco's alone in this instance as I think North Stores is sufficiently diverse and competitive to hold its own. But I can't bring myself to temper my disdain for the very dreadful Subway. I'm aghast at the idea that a company that mass-produces nutritionally bereft baguettes of the blandest variety manages to stay in business, especially when there's quality convenience food directly opposite. So, in short, I urge to ignore the ridiculously low prices that they attach to their unhealthy, unsatisfying snacks, and do yourselves a favour, and buy yourself something a lot more wholesome across the road.

There are tables outside both doors, so you can sit outside in the summer (or in the winter if you need to smoke!) The service is friendly and pretty quick. Prices are reasonable, and the menu is standard coffee shop fare - sandwhiches, panninnis etc. There are some lovely homemade soups on at the moment, which make a nice change for a winter lunchtime. They also have pies and other specials on at the mo. After trying most of the bridgend coffee shops during a lunchbreak Bauhaus ranks as one of the best in Bridgend. It's nice that independent coffee shops are still going strong in Bridgend - you definately get more friendly service here than in a typical chain coffee place.

Monty's Sandwich Bar…read more 9a Thornhill Road, Rhiwbina, Cardiff, CF14 6PD. TEL: 029 2076 6437 BLINK and you'll miss Monty's. It is tucked away in a discreet unit within a small parade up on Thornhill Road, Rhiwbina. I was given a warm welcome on my arrival but I didn't know what to have and was gently pointed in the direction of Monty's Milano Panini. As my sandwich was being constructed, I was regularly consulted on how much of this or how little of that I would prefer from the counter, which was a nice touch. The Milano filling included soft mozzarella cheese, tomato and basil, all toasted until you had a molten mouthful of Italy. Mine was beautifully presented with a carefully arranged side salad and toasted to perfection. I left an empty plate in rapid time. The Milano was not at all expensive for a deli-style panini either, priced at £2.65. There was plenty of change left over for three Welsh cakes for £1 and a drink for £1 from the fridge. As well as its pricing, Monty's strength is its people. It has a loyal clientele and embraces its customers. Magazines are sprawled out for waiting customers and there is plenty of laugh-out-loud chit-chat. It's almost like a barber shop that does paninis and sandwiches. And very nice ones at that. This could be a bad thing in terms of choice, but it's not. There's too much choice in the M&S range as it is already. I spend ages every time just staring at the selections of sandwiches and salads. Then another age choosing juice. This store is in an incredibly handy location for anyone who commutes in and out of Cardiff Central, as it's right there in the station. It's also great as a place to stop into before going to Vue Cinemas; here you can get healthy and yummy snacks instead of salty cardboard hot dogs. In short; the food here is fantastic, if not cheap. Great for a healthy snack or treat, not so great for stocking up on basic before you head home (although, maybe if you're on a better wage then me, you'd be alright).

It has a great location, but it's not the classiest of joints - and certainly isn't a place to go for a healthy bite to eat (think breakfast baguettes and carvery sandwiches rather than light salads). The smell of cooking meat never fails to attract passers-by, though - and before you know it on a fine day the seating under the trees is packed out with people tucking into overloaded bacon sandwiches and cheap cups of tea. Its popularity endures despite its proximity to the old Victorian underground toilets, which waft up a vague scent of cleaning products, and the resident pigeons, notorious for their accurate aim, perched in the trees above - you have been warned!

With the bustling shops all around, and the new St David's hopping Centre breathing new life into this end of town, this really is a pleasant little square in the centre of it all. Why, oh why, then, do we have such a dingy little snack bar situated right slap bang in the middle of it? Serving hot drinks and burgers and such, this is less a snack bar than a roadside burger van. I always wander past wishing that there was some other food on offer there. Because the seats in The Hayes all belong to them, so going to get sushi and bringing it to enjoy out in the sun is a bit of a no-no. They also don't tend to keep their area all that clean and tidy, perhaps relying on the council to do their cleaning services for them. This means that quite often there can be a build up of rubbish and chips, attracting seagulls and pigeons galore. I just get the overriding impression that this corner of Cardiff has seen better days.
