Unless you plan to make their dinner service right as they open, be sure to make a reservation in advance as the tiny spot fills up very quickly. From the moment we arrived for our dinner reservation the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and as if we were right at home. As soon as we were settled in, our waiter brought us a small "welcome dish" from the chef that he described to us a typical Tuscan soup. I don't know what it was called but it was delicious! For our food, we ordered their tordelli with meat ragu sauce after our waiter informed us it's a typical type of ravioli in that region. You'll quickly learn as you travel through Italy that each region and often many towns and cities have their own unique ways of creating their pasta dishes that you can only find in that region. The recommendation was a good one because the dish was delicious! For our main, we ordered the Pork Steak Senese which consisted of pre-cut grilled pork with parmesan and balsmamic and grilled trevisano (a type of leafy green). It didn't look the most appetizing when it was placed in front of us but looks can be deceiving because it was another delicious dish. To wrap up what was already an enjoyable meal, when our waiter brought our bill he also placed a small tray of almond biscuit cookies topped with powdered sugar, a dessert typical of the Tuscan region, as another compliments of the kitchen. Between the tasty food and the small gestures of hospitality, we will definitely be back to dine here if we ever found ourselves in Viareggio again.

Most parties sat outside, but a trip inside to check out the restored mill is fun while you wait. Wander around the building for a view of a small waterfall surrounded with meticulously planted flowers and groomed lawn. Loved the picked onions and olives brought to the table with bread. Focus on meats here - chicken, lamb and rabbit come by themselves and in combination, grilled or fried. Fried rabbit was my favorite (everybody who had grilled rabbit reported it as very spicy). Deserts are all home-made, a good mix of Tiramisu, another version of it with Nutella, fruit tarts, panna cotta, etc. Lovely place, you will leave with a happy full tummy and pictures to brag to your friends about "this nice restaurant in Tuscany I once dined at..."

O Sole Mio, located in the Tuscan seaside town of Viareggio, is perfect proof of that. It's a very relaxed place where the locals go which is always a good sign. It was just around the corner from my AirBnb and came highly recommended by my host. Don't be fooled into thinking it's a tiny spot when you walk in or look through the window because they have an ample enclosed patio that seats more than double what is the front dining room can hold. The prices are very reasonable for their large pizza (around 7 euros each) and service relatively quick. We opted for a primi of bruschetta with tomatoes and the margherita pizza and a prosciutto crudo pizza topped with balsamic vinegar and walnuts. The prosciutto pizza was hands down the winner...the addition of walnuts really made for an interesting (and delicious) flavor addition. If you're in a rush-they also do takeout orders which we saw several locals doing while we dined. All in all, I'd definitely come back if I'm ever in town again.
