Sadly, we were not impressed with the food. First it is a bit of a hike from the town center, so that start would make expectations greater for a special meal. It started well enough with some tasty bread (served in a paper bag) and olive oil. The bacon-wrapped burrata seemed a featured delicacy, but instead of wow, it was only meh. We each ordered a single plate of a pasta speciality with a glass of local red. The red was surprisingly good for just €5 per glass., but the pasta again were disappointments. My wife's dish (Tortelli Fidelio) was what would be normally termed ravioli, supposedly stuffed with shellfish. We could not tell the kind of shellfish, nor could our waiter explain it due the language barrier, even with the English translation menu. Regardless, it did not impress. My pasta (Orecchiette in a baked clay pot with cheese and minced meat) was the local specialty. While the clay pot came out steaming hot, it was obviously reheated after having been frozen since sometime earlier. Underneath the top layer it was cold. Really? Reheated?? I had to send it back. While it came back to me hot throughout, the bloom was off the rose. We left without a dessert, already dissatisfied with having hiked over a mile from the town center for what was supposedly the best the town had to offer. A taxi ride back to our hotel near the town center was €20. Not money well spent at the restaurant nor the unnecessary extra cost of travel.

However, the service was among the worst we've encountered during several weeks traveling across Southern Italy and Sicily. The restaurant added what was effectively an "American-style" extra charge, including a bread fee and a cover charge that came to about €15 per person. While a small coperto is common in Italy, this felt excessive and was not clearly communicated upfront. Overall, while the kitchen shows potential, the poor service and unexpected charges make it difficult to recommend. There are many better options in Matera that offer both great food and a more welcoming, transparent experience.

Ordered a sparkling rose, a beer, bar olives and two different tapas style appetizer samplers typical of the Puglia region. My platter had: crostini with bruschetta, mystery cheese (I never learned what this was!) that tastes like queso fresco with a pickled beet jawn on top, mini eggplant lasagna, a pizza fritta pocket, grilled cheese, meatballs, and buffalo mozzarella. BF's platter had: caprese tomato/mozzarella combo with seasoned olive oil and side of pesto, meatballs, grilled cheese and a quinoa salad. Both platters were fresh and tasty. Perfect portion for a light lunch and a true taste of the region. Perhaps a tad overpriced since it was a bit touristy here, however, I think I preferred this app sampler to that of La Uascezze and I loved that place, so it was worth it. He has done a lot of work by himself and the result is very nice and tasteful. They serve typical food from the region at lunch time. We had a huge antipasti with delicatessen and cheeses, parmigiana, a black rice pudding and fava beans with green vegetables. We could choose 3 home made pasta dishes (primi) and 3 types of meat as "secondi" (main courses). We were too full for a dessert but the food was overall very fresh and excellent. I explained to the staff that I can't eat any dairy so they adapted the recipes they served me on purpose! I'm pretty sure they could also adapt for vegan and vegetarian options, as the main ingredients in the menu were vegetables!! The choice of wine was excellent, the owner knows very well how to combine wine and food. They explained to us that they will start to offer breakfast and aperitivo (with fresh drinks and food) in the coming weeks. I would definitely recommend to go!
