I liked it but it would be much better if it were indoors AND if they had less sweet items and more savory.

We had a fantastic walking food tour. A great mix of food and Kansas City history. We are not from…read morethe area and came for a long weekend and this was a fabulous way to learn about the city and enjoy the food!

Being an Independence resident, but knowing somewhat about the history of Kansas City (my dad…read moreworked for KCPL for 35 years, and used to take me up and down those streets), I was vaguely familiar with some of the history. It's quite fascinating. But the little bits and pieces I didn't realize were so deeply important. I'd only been to 2 of the locations on the food tour, Grinders, and Grunaer's. That is funny cause I thought I'd been to more places around the area. The American Royal Parade was going on, and parking was an issue, if I'd not found a spot in Grinder's across the street parking lot, I don't know what I'd have done. I never intend to learn to parallel park. It scares me to death. We met Rebekkah at Grinders, and she presented us with maps of where we were going, with facts on the pages. Frankly, it'd be easier to park kind of in the middle of the tour. That maybe something worth mentioning. I don't know the significance of the Crossroads itself, other than I am drawn to that area, as opposed to the Power and Light District which I try to avoid. There is alot of history in the Crossroads that is important, and it was touched upon in this tour. It also gave me an idea to keep an eye out for other city's walking food tours, as I travel sometimes for a month. I felt like I wanted to know more history. I wanted to dig deeper. I don't know why I feel this way. Maybe I want to know the very importance of the area, besides Tom Pendegrast, which is extremely interesting. The tour touched on a few restaurants along the way. There were a couple I wondered why they weren't mentioned, and I'd love to know the history of the Manny's Building, though Manny's isn't a favorite of mine, the building is interesting. And why is Town Topics just in this area? And Lulu's? Hammer Press as well, even though it's not a place to eat...oh well, can't cover everything...I thought there was something missed, but also alot of interesting history gained. As far as food, each place provided a very small amount. A variety was present and they were able to accomodate both vegetarians and meat eaters. There isn't that much food. I would tell someone that, as well. The places that stood out in my mind were Snow and Company, Grinders, Elbow's and Cafe Gratitude. Tons of walking to get back to our cars. We stopped back at Christoper Elbow Chocolate. Rebekkah created a customer out of me, and I will be eating at Cafe Gratitude and going to Snow and Company. With these thoughts in mind, I would recommend this to an out of towner if you were in the city for a while. But be prepared to eat afterwards. it's a great way to find out about Kansas city and what it has to offer. Knowing the history of Kansas City makes me appreciate it a bit more.

I am crushing so hard on The Westside. For years I have enjoyed visiting this neighborhood, but I…read morehad no idea how much I would love it as a resident. Allow me to tell you why it's simply the best. First, let's get 17th and Summit out of the way. The intersection is the epicenter of what most people recognize as The Westside, and for good reason. Want to eat great food? Then why not hit up Westside Local, Chez Elle, Novel, or Los Alamos? Don't forget Fervere, one of the city's best boutique bakeries. You want coffee? Little Freshie brews up Oddly Correct, yet is equally well known for their snow cones and sodas. If you feel like doing some shopping there's Westside Storey and Utilitarian Workshop. Get your haircut at Mood or The Calico Beard & Mercantile. If you need a place to stay, just go right around the corner and rent a room at Jefferson House. All of this on gorgeous treelined streets. It's legit. But since moving to the neighborhood, I've learned that The Westside is so much more than that intersection. I love the eclectic mix of both homes and residents. Walk along the treelined streets and you'll see modern structures made of concrete and glass stack up next to stately century old manors. Cozy apartments are next to gigantic single-family homes. Traditionally a Hispanic neighborhood, its now amazingly diverse without losing it's cultural history. The Maddie Rhodes Center nurtures Latino artists while right next door Baila Westside teaches traditional dance. The importance of the Hispanic culture is especially obvious around this time of year, with many of the businesses hosting altars for Dia De Los Muertos, plus a street festival that draws quite a crowd. Speaking of festivals, this neighborhood is nuts for them. A quick look at the calendar reminded me that coming up is the Family Fall festival, plus a harvest dance. In December the mayor hosts an annual holiday party, and there are a smattering of other smaller events throughout the year. With such extreme proximity to both The Crossroads and Southwest Boulevard, it's always a surprise to me how many people don't even know this enclave exists. But I can promise you that those that do know will love to visit, and those that live here don't ever want to leave. Just like the billboards and graffiti art say, Bienvenidos al Westside!

Upon scanning your ticket, there were two guards at a display playing trumpets(Hark the Herald Angels Sing). The hostess encouraged us to redeem our free gift at a booth across from the entrance and there, they gave one free renaissance festival ticket to each guest. Pleasant surprise! The lights were very nice and definitely gave a joyful medieval Christmas overlay. The lighted paths were fun but sometimes difficult to follow. It was easy to roam off the path and get a little turned around but it was no trouble at all, just a bit rocky terrain so good walking shoes are recommended. There were booths that provided warmth, food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. I worked at the chicken and chips booth at the renaissance festival when when I was 14, my very first job, so I had to stop and order some chicken and chips(french fries) with a side of honey mustard and my husband ordered the brisket chili. The chili was served in a 16oz styrofoam cup which kept it hot until he was finished. The chicken and chips were served hot and fresh as well...3 large chicken strips and delicious crispy french fries. Both meals were absolutely PHENOMENAL for such a decent price of $9 each. As we ate, we sat and watched a fire show with juggling and other fun tricks. Unfortunately, I didn't get but one photo because I had an extended day of work and didn't get to charge my phone before heading to the event. We plan to return next year. Tickets were very affordable and with early bird special, we purchased all 5 tickets for $58. 4 adults and one child. It was a great time!

This year they opened up the festival grounds more and moved some of the stuff like the Glow Mini Golf, Snowball fight area and light up maze out of the flow of the normal walk way so that you could enjoy the lights and time without having to dodge some kid throwing stuff at you. They also moved the Cookie making station to the White Stage Hall which made the flow of it better and less of a wait line. My whole group spent the $28 on the refillable hot chocolate thermos, I do wish there were more locations to refill it I only saw two places. They did do a better job at having warming tents spread throughout more as well. There were performances and a pub crawl you could join in as well.
