Safety first!
Rich H.

Since we live in the path of totality, we invited a few friends over to join us for a watch party. We ended up with 50-60 people at the house, from as far away as Germany, Alaska, and Florida, along with a bunch of "locals". I smoked some ribs and we had a potluck. The day started iffy with storms to both the north and south of us and cloudy skies. The rain managed to slip around us and moved eastward, and sunny skies prevailed right up until totality when the cloud cover returned. It was awesome to see the various "phases" of the sun as the moon eclipsed it, and totality was completely amazing. The skies got very dark, and for a few moments you could see both sunrise/sunset effects at the same time on either side of the shadow band on the horizon. The changes in behavior of the insects and animals on the farm were interesting to witness as well. All in all, it was a wonderful experience, even though it got cloudy during totality. We still managed to capture some great images and saw some solar flares around the edge of the moon.

On a football field with 1,000 of my closest friends, and Total Eclipse of the Heart blaring over the stadium speakers. Absolutely in love with our planet!

Yeah that was cool. I liked the crescent shaped shadows on the ground and the fact that it got so dark that the crickets and cicadas started their nighttime song. It was fun to know that you and millions of other people were all stopped enjoying the same thing. The quiet was really profound.

Waiting for totality in Liberty MO

Storm before and storm after, but PERFECT 2-minute totality in Liberty MO! Truly amazing! Some observations: we heard a rooster crow, but I didn't notice any other unusual animal activity; I guess there weren't many birds around. Didn't hear any locusts or crickets, and it didn't get totally dark. Also missing were the wind gusts and 10-degree temperature drop (one person actually brought a thermometer and said it got 2 degrees cooler). But the sunset and eery dusk were pretty darn cool. SO glad I got to see it!

My Eclipse Yelp Event schwag!

Had rooftop status at the Yelp Lead Bank Event. Since we didn't melt or get taken over by aliens, we got to enjoy yummy treats, like Nothing Bundt Cakes, Sundry Sodas and some Eclipse glasses. It was also fun to meet more Yelpers, from the area. Thanks for another cool event Adam, you def know how to treat your peeps well! xo

The view from Lead Bank at 1:07 P.M.

I opted to stay in downtown and view the eclipse during my lunch break so Lead Bank was the perfect place to go. Thank you, Adam and Lead Bank, for putting on an eclipse viewing event at the rooftop patio. We did not have to worry about getting eclipse sunglasses since those were provided, and there was refreshing soda from The Sundry and dessert from Nothing Bundt Cakes. It was great being outside and seeing how many people were outside too. Other rooftop parties were going on as well, and many who were working simply went outside of their office buildings to hang out and enjoy the festivities during their break time. The excitement filled the sky with the sound of people all over cheering and celebrating together. Seeing the eclipse itself was an amazing experience, but even more amazing was seeing how people all came together.

Neat to see, saw it Italy several years ago through a welding mask at Camp Darby. It was an odd feeling like the zombie apocalypse or something. Wish it had been clear outside, overcast skies didn't help.

Silly clouds.

The clouds tried to hard to ruin it for us! The one good thing they did was keep the temperature down for us! We drove to pretty much the middle of nowhere to be away from strangers and closer to totality. It was a great afternoon for us! I made my poor husband take a million photos of me and our 2 year old son with the rural scenery. About 30 minutes until totality, we started my sons favorite movie in the mini van and cranked the A/C so we could sit out of the back and watch. We had 2 minutes and 28 seconds of totality. The clouds were so dense that we could probably only see it for about half of that time, but it was worth it! The crickets started chirping and a street light came on very far in the distance. By far my favorite part was the surrounding sky - to one side we had a sunset and to the other a sunrise. It was one of the most remarkable things I've ever seen! It was amazing to get to experience while pregnant too - a great story to tell later on. I hope to take the kids to go see it again, hopefully without all of the clouds!

I had spent several weeks trying to decide where I wanted to be for this probable once in a lifetime event. I chose a small remote cemetery in rural Clinton County MO that was near the center line of totality. The cemetery is the only thing that remains of the forgotten town of Lilly. This is where one set of my Great-Great grandparents are buried and I can imagine them watching the last total eclipse in this region that occurred in 1869 from their farm nearby. The cemetery is not only remote - 2 gravel roads off a county road - it is on a hillcrest, with a great view of the surrounding horizons. I arrived early not knowing traffic conditions and when I arrived, to my surprise, another car was there and with New York plates. A retired science teacher and his wife drove from Rochester to this exact spot because of the isolation and the hillcrest also! We killed the time waiting pulling weeds from the cemetery rose garden with him educating me on eclipse's and cemetery stone and I schooling him in local history. Once the totality struck with silence, darkness, temperature change and euphoria and slight panic made this a phenomenal event and a memorable day.

I made a last minute decision to drive out for a better shot of the eclipse. As I drove, the incoming clouds made good view points tough to locate but I found a great one at The Argosy. With the back down, I stretched out in reverse in the drivers seat watching the production through the sunroof while nesting my head on the steering wheel. I had brought a book with me to look through while waiting for the 1:07 hit time, but being out under the sun amongst other onlookers, I was in awe. It was beautiful & amazing to see. I kept taking pictures with my phone using the film from my viewing glasses as a filter to keep this memory. I felt blessed to be this close to a point of totality. It was weird but incredible to be surrounded by midnight at midday.

It's about to get real!

Amazing experience from the roof top of the Lead Bank in the Cross Roads. BIG Thanks to Adam S. for setting up a fun venue and event to watch this once in a lifetime opportunity. We got super lucky with the clouds clearing giving us the chance to see the eclipse in all its glory! Super fun to see all the people out on roof tops in the area ... just as it hit 100% and went dark someone yelled "I love Kansas City!" ... I'd say I have to agree!! We live in a pretty spectacular town and universe!

Will never forget this experience!

I've lived in many places. This wasn't my first eclipse. But by far the most enjoyable.

Sauer Castle - My great great grand Fathers home ...

Sauer Castle

Sauer Castle has been a part of my life since I was a kid…read more My dad used to take me and my siblings up to the castle at night on family drives and tell us great ghostly stories. Once me and my school buddies could drive, we would make many journeys up to this area, drink and freak ourselves out. I've taken many friends on the drive through Argentine in KCK up the steep incline of a road to the castle to gaze. There are many stories about this place, so many that I have no idea which are true and which are not. I should do the research to find out, but there is something inside of me that wishes to keep *all* the stories I have heard alive and well. But the few that I can think of at this time include: There was an underground railroad tunnel to the Kaw River from this residence. The wife hanged herself on the second story balcony from the bell tower rope.....her ghost could be seen on the balcony in a flowing white gown. There is an outline of an old pond (fountain) on the grounds that two children had drown in. The stories talk about the husband's ghost walking the house and grounds protecting his property. I've been told that the stones and woodwork in the house was imported from Germany. He chose this site because it sat on top of bluff of the Kaw River and he could see the entire city. That's what I've been told through the years, again, I don't know what is and isn't true. When I was a teenager there was a caretaker that lived in the house. He supposedly had guns and dogs to help him take care of all of the curious people making the pilgrimage up to look at the castle from afar or up on the *private property* itself. Since then, the caretake has passed, the house had a huge auction and the house in now surrounded by a chain link fence. I don't know who owns it, but I hope something great happens with this legend of a castle. I'm sure I gave myself crows feet from all of the squinting I've done at this location hoping to see a ghostly figure. (and at times sure that I did see things) I'm sure I've given myself some anxiety disorder from the tricks my imagination has played on me because of this place. I wouldn't change a thing because I love every memory I have of this place. Not only Sauer Castle, but much of the neighborhood itself, stories run rampant in this *interesting* part of town. Now.....go! Go check it out for yourself and I hope you don't get lost in trying to find this mysterious, fantastic piece of local flavor!

I found out about Sauer Castle back when I was dating my now husband. We went on a ghost tour around the city and this was one of the stops. I won't bore everyone here with Sauer Castle lore but it's well worth the wikipedia read. Every once in a while if I'm in the area I'll drive by and see how the renovations are going on this place. It's kind of remarkable to see and take in, even just from the road, as it's in a very modest neighborhood and all of a sudden there is this massive victorian mansion. The ghost stories only make the place all the more interesting. I believe it's currently been purchased and is being restored so who knows, maybe one day this will be a landmark folks can explore - I'd love to go inside. Until then it will just be one of my favorite little off the beaten path KC landmarks.

Food trucks line the streets and most of the stores have a little cafe inside, so spend the day shopping! You literally will spend hours there because there is so much to see! I make sure every month I have First Friday weekends off so that I can go to the West Bottom antiques. Most of the stores only open during First Fridays; stores like Bella Patina, Good JuJu, and Top Hat are some of my favs along with the Painted Sofa that is open every weekend. We weren't so fortunate to be there on those days however but still managed a couple of trips to this industrial district. I'm an amateur shutter-bug and places like this intrigue me. The empty streets, abandoned buildings, railroad tracks and rawness appeals to me and the fact that this was the heart and soul of Kansas City back in the day feeds my desire to learn about the history of this beautiful city. We came late in the afternoon and just walked the streets. A few shops were open but the majority of them were closed. Best way I can describe the place is it's pretty-ugly. Not everyone can appreciate the beauty in worn out, dilapidated buildings. I loved it! Stockyard warehouses with the broken glass windows, fire escapes that precariously dangle on the sides of buildings, thistle laden lots, the painted signs on the sides of brick walls - everything was a photo op. My biggest faux-pas? I didn't pack my "good" camera and it was amusing to walk around fairly unplugged with only an i-phone to shoot with (and to top it off, my storage was full LOL!!). I guess that was a sign from the universe allowing me to experience the West Bottoms. Some blocks of the Bottoms was so quiet it was eerie! I could sense something or someone watching from above or somewhere. Loved it all! Beautiful and would certainly come back again. We saw a few homeless people walking around with their shopping carts but overall, felt safe. I would hate to see this place excessively commercialized and I'm so happy to see that tenants are filling the empty warehouses and embracing KC's historical past and merging it with the new.

We didn't partake in all you can eat bacon contest ($10) but watched, and it was pretty entertaining. The beer samples were good, including the pale ale, dark lager, and blonde. The event was held in the parking lot at the Ameristar Casino, not too much shade but thankfully the weather was nice today for the event. Enjoying the food beer and people watching. Great idea to have the ticket bands to coordinate stations. It helped us keep track of what we'd tried & where each was located. I had more blonde than expected as I'm more of a sour drinker (hint, hint). My only complaints were having nowhere to set anything down; it made eating samples & drinking difficult. Also, a few tents or some kind of shade would have also made a world of difference. If not for the wind, the excessive sweating would have sent me home after our last samples. If a little better set-up, or a kinder day, this is an event I would love to taste again.

The KC skyline frames everything, with great views of the city while packing in Union Station, Kauffman Center, T-Mobile Center, Western Auto sign, the fun-if-not-slightly-cheese Marriott light up billboard (which will always be near and dear to me after seeing it after the Chiefs Super Bowl win), and this cool, old building.
