This past Sunday at Mendel's Backyard BBQ & Brew in Surfside FL, I had the pleasure of introducing 12 people to one of THE BEST & MOST POPULAR restaurants in the Miami area. When I arranged the dinner back in Decemeber, I chose this particular night because I knew it would be the weekend of the AFC/NFC Championships games but had no idea that this was also Yeshiva week. What better thing to do than eat BBQ and watch football. Luckily I know the "Pit Master" and that has a few extra perks. For most of these guys this was their first foray into the BBQ world so Mendel made this a TOTAL experience for all of them. I decided that I would order various things off the smoker for the group and they would be presented on platters for the everyone.
We started with the appetizers - Brisket truffle poutine (House Cut Fries, Mushroom Truffle Gravy, Smoked Brisket), The Brisket Sundae (Layered Slaw, Mendel's Beans, BBQ Beef & Crispy Onions) and Chicken wings which are lightly smoked and fried. The Brisket Truffle Poutine is a phenomenal dish. The truffle sauce - made in house by Mendel Segal and his staff has just the right amount of savory and sweet and you will find yourself using whatever utensil is in front of you to get the very last drops of the sauce of the plate. My advice - ask for bread to mop up the left over sauce. The Brisket sundae - (This is my All Time Favorite) is usually served in a mason jar, but for tonight -we used big bowls with lots of spoons so we could all share. For the uninitiated - this turned out to be the most talk about dish of the night....until one by one the the platters of meat started to show up. One of our crew had never had or heard of a "Burnt Ends" so I ran into the kitchen and asked Mendel to plate one for me. If you go by the name - you think you are getting a burned piece of meat. Mendel's Burnt Ends - are the prized 2nd cut of a brisket which are cubed, then sauced and placed back into the smoker until the sauce caramelizes creating little mouth sized chunks of delectable "Meat Candy". The flavors explode on to the pallet like fireworks on the 4th of July. Sweet, tangy, beefy morsels of meat, the likes of which I can guarantee that most have never had before.
New to the menu Lamb Ribs. These are small, but oh so flavorful. Lamb is, for most, an acquired taste. Many people think that lamb is gamey and dont like the flavor but it was a staple at my grandmothers house. Mendel has taken lamb to whole new place. Smoke lamb ribs - this was a first for me - are delicious. The lamb flavor paired with the smoke and the herb rub pushed these over the top. This became the group favorite - even over the beef ribs. Several more orders had to be placed to satisfy the hungry crowd. Finally, what everyone has waited for came out to the table - The Brisket. I asked everyone to wait and try the brisket how it was really intended to be served - without sauce. No, this is not your Bubbe's Rosh Hashanah brisket - this is smoked lo & slo for up to 16 hours in a wood fired smoker. Rubbed with Mendel's secret rub. No need for sauce, but if you want to add a little extra zing - Mendel now has 2 sauces - his Original KC Competition BBQ Sauce and his new Pomegranate BBQ sauce. Try them both - its hard to pick a favorite and both go well with the brisket or any of the other meats. For me - I'll just have it plain.
Our final course was a surprise for the crowd - I had arranged with Mendel to make some Pastrami for us. This isn't a usual menu item - yet. This is where the Bonds of the Kosher BBQ Brethren has it perks. Mendel started to brine the pastrami last week and smoked it up just for us. The pastrami was served platter style with some deli mustard. There is a huge difference between your favorite pastrami at your favorite deli and this....This is so much better. Thick pieces of pastrami that absolutely melt in your mouth. No need for bread here - you dont want it and the brown mustard will just kill the taste The people at the table next to us saw what we were eating and the gentleman quickly became my friend. He asked if he could taste the pastrami. I gave him a slice and he said it was the best he has ever had. High praise indeed. Eventually, Mendel will make his pastrami a regular menu item, but I hope not - I want something thats just for me. Dont leave without getting a slice of Mendel's Famous Bourbon Pecan Pie à la Mode.
BEER - Mendel has many. We probably sampled 8 or 9 of them and they are all hand picked by Mendel to go with any of the items on his menu. The wait staff - led by the Manager Tim is fantastic. An 18% Gratuity is automatically added to the bill - but I encourage you to be generous. These are some of the Best and Hardest working waiters in all of Miami, so keep that in mind read more
