I think I would have steered clear of this store had I read this review (http://chattanooga.citysearch.com/review/41574075) prior to setting foot in it. But that's probably not true because Backstreet Betty's is the only place in Chattanooga that carries my favorite brands of jeans, and you can also happen upon the occasional cute top there--which is where my story begins. After making my cute top purchase, it sat in the bag for a couple weeks before I wore it one day for a total of probably six hours. When I was hand washing it, I noticed three small holes in the back. After seeing those, there was no question in my mind that I would be returning it immediately. (I was also disappointed b/c I really liked the top). So I got online to find their number and hours as it was a Sunday--that's when I found the above review and knew I was dealing with a company that apparently doesn't understand the value of excellent customer service. When I tried to take it back, I encountered the owner's daughter, who is always on the phone and hardly says "hello" when you walk in the store. And forget a "can I help you?" Anyhoo, I told her what happened , and she said it looked like my top snagged on something when I was wearing it. She explained that their return policy was within 7 days of purchase, so the only thing she could do was leave it for her mom to look at. You could tell she was real well versed in what to say in situations like these. It seems (and is obvious from the other review) this sort of thing has happened before to other (former) Backstreet Betty's shoppers. The owner got back with me a couple days later and reiterated that it looked like something had snagged my top. Then she launched into the difference between boutique and department store return policies--saying that boutiques are much more stringent. I told her that I am very familiar with the whole boutique experience and that I find the customer service in these establishments to usually be exemplary. It has to be in order to keep the customers coming back. Her next step was to explain that I had no proof-of-purchase, which is true as I don't hold onto receipts for things that I am definitely keeping/have worn, and she told me there is no way to know where I got the top as Dillard's carries the same line. She caught me--I was trying to pull a fast one on them! Give me a break. For a $50 top? I offered a copy of my credit card statement. After doing the math, she could have seen that what I charged was the same price as the holey top. Nevertheless, this wouldn't suffice for her either. All in all, nothing convinced her that she didn't want to lose a customer over a $50 top, even a customer that had just recently (before the holes) bought an expensive pair of jeans in her store. She tried to somehow turn this around to say that it was me doing this over $50. Not really sure what that was supposed to mean--I guess that I'm losing a store over the $50 top?? It's their loss, not mine. After that, I just let her know that I was done with Backstreet Betty's and would be adding to the negative review already posted about them online. She told me not to threaten her and that she could do the same thing to me. Whatever that means! And it's not a threat--just a fact. So here is the review as promised. If you want to hit a boutique in Chattanooga, skip Backstreet Betty's and check out Susanna's. And yes, the customer service there is what it should be and beyond. read more

The owner was super friendly and accommodating. Personable and helpful the entire time. The store is super cute and the clothes are just as awesome. Prices are very affordable for on trend fashion. Almost everything I tried on was perfect. It was hard limiting myself. I left with four super cute pieces (shirts and dresses). The location is cool, a breezeway between a couple of restaurants, but nothing scary. It's more of a normal walk through and some ivy located on one end makes a neat picture if you are so inclined. I recommend this boutique to anybody without hesitation. I'll definitely return when I'm in town. read more

Do not shop here. And if you do, look your items over thoroughly before leaving. Horrible customer service. I purchased a dress for event and ended up wearing something I already had. A few days later I went to return the dress with tags on and receipt in hand. I had tried the dress on at home once for about a minute before deciding not to wear it. When I returned it, the owner found a rice sized spot on the dress. Now, I do not know if this was on the dress at the time of purchase (and probably wouldn't have noticed as it was so small). The owner told me it looked like I had eaten in the dress and something got on it. I told her that I tried it on once at home for only about a minute and that I had not eaten in the dress. She told me again that the stain was from food (FALSE) and insinuated that I was lying. If she couldn't take the dress back because of the teeny tiny spot (again, don't think it was from me, but no way of knowing), that is fine.. just tell me unfortunately you cannot accept it back because of the stain. Do not insinuate over and over that your customer is lying and be rude. I was baffled by the service I received. read more

Cute little boutique. The only one in the center city downtown area. I looked at a few pieces of clothing and they seemed to be around $35-45+. Accessories were cheaper- I got a unique pair of earrings for only $12. Nice quality stuff; not cheapy. Owner is very sweet and friendly. We're from out of town and she gave us a lot of tips if things to do and places to eat. read more

I was visiting Chattanooga for the week and happened upon Backstreet Betty's. What a fabulous store with an equally lovely owner! She was very helpful, as I was shopping solo, without being overwhelming. Betty gave honest feedback, while providing a no pressure environment. The clothes are adorable, unique, well made and reasonably priced for a boutique. She helped me find the perfect pair of jeans for my body type. I can't say enough about my experience. Cute clothes, used to be my favorite boutique in town, but ridiculously rude. Went in to sadly return (found out that she doesn't accept returns, that's always nice right?) a dress that I loved but simply could afford. She sat there reviewing every inch of the dress, that was in the original bag with tags and everything, saying that it had been worn and had dirt and wrinkles all over it. The dress had never been out of the bag. I respectfully told her I didn't know what was in the dress and that it had never been worn. But she would not believe me. The seemingly minuscule spectacles she was pointing out could not of been my doing and she said NO store would ever accept a return in such a condition. She proceeded to tell me that if I left her store and returned the dress in the condition that it left the store in (might I remind you that it had never been out of the bag) she would think about accepting it for store credit. So rude. Respect for the customer sure isn't in this store. Be sure you like the article of clothing BEFORE you leave the store. Not worth going through what I did. read more
