Harbourside Children's Centre

Harbourside Children's Centre

I found the program helped prepare my son for kindergarten and provided a great foundation of academics. The center also provides a variety of exposure to new skills, foods, art techniques, play activities, and topics. They have a communication app that provides updates and photos. I would recommend Harbourside to someone looking for a professionally run childcare centre.

I gave more than 3 months notice (closer to 6 months), and we hadn't even started attending this daycare. The director suggested that I could have my deposit refunded once someone else took our spot, but did not put this in writing or clarify any stipulations. I did not think this would be a problem as they have a long waitlist, and I waited almost a year myself to get in. When I inquired about our refund later, the director was patronizing and re-emphasized that they do not refund deposits and she wasn't doing anything illegal. I was out $900 ($150 admin + 1/2 the first month). I understand I signed a contract, but this is distasteful behaviour and it's wrong. I was made to feel like I was trying to rip off this daycare. In retrospect I should have asked for anything we discussed to be put in writing, but I was putting my faith in the Director who seemed like a nice lady in all the times I interacted with her. I had endorsed this daycare before I even attended it based on my visits and interactions. I can't speak to their care, but I would caution parents who are considering this daycare to read their agreement carefully and consider other daycares that seem less mercenary in their refund policy, and charge a more reasonable deposit fee. A lot of us are new to and anxious about enrolling our children into daycare because it's so stressful and it's such an ordeal to find a good one. But please learn from my mistake and don't be out money better spent on your child. I feel embarrassed that I am out this much money but I feel this was important to share.

Based upon how expensive this daycare is, I expected it to be exceptional. When the person in…read morecharge admit to me that she doesn't care much for babies, I thought, "that's ok, I'm sure the actual caregivers are better, let's give them a chance." The workers seem exhausted, chatted very little with the children, and seemed to not understand much about early childhood development when I asked them for opinions on techniques and practices. They didn't read to the kids (storytime consisted of PLAYING A CD while flipping corresponding pages). The floors were dirty, many toys were grimey and broken. The play area was tiny and neglected. Not much room to explore and no stations to try out different things. A place where imagination goes to die. One kid kept pushing another while no workers caught it. My child (11 months) was slowly falling off a bike and was going to fall in a bad position so I ran over to stop. The outside "play area" had a rubber surface in poor condition and which had crumbled. Children (including mine) were eating bits of it and no one was stopping them. One kid had a mouth full of black rubber for at least an hour. A child found a housepaint brush in the (empty) sandbox with a VERY sharp handle and was putting it in her mouth when I stopped her. In all fairness, the worker had no idea how it got there. But why was a dangerous object there in the first place? Most of all I was disturbed by how little the workers paid attention to the kids. They all seemed clocked out. I know childcare is tough work but the two other daycares that my family is familiar with are cheaper, and STELLAR (unfortunately we moved away). The workers at the daycares I knew all had Education degrees and a sincere, genuine interest in early development approaches and provided compassionate, present, care. I thought this $$ corporate daycare would be at least as good. :/

They are very careful to create a loving environment for the children with a great structure and routine, but lots of learning through play. The children learn to become independent while playing thoughtfully and eating respectfully together. I also love that she brings the little ones out as much as possible. There's never a dull moment and Julia always gets excited to see the teachers, and all the friends she's made there. We also love the fact that one of the teachers has gently introduced English to our daughter in a fun and playful way, it's so great for her to have the opportunity to learn at such a young age and have fun doing it!
