A multilevel building with completely separate stores that allows a person to go from store to store without ever leaving the building? Complete with a directory of where the stores are within the building? And a place to eat while shopping? Well, friends, that's Davis Mercantile in Shipshewana. There are about twenty stores on four levels. They're really random stores, too. Like those random stores at real malls, the non-chain ones that seemed to hang on despite the fact that they didn't get as much business. They cater mostly to tourists, but places like Lolly's Fabrics probably also probably do much better with the locals here than they would in almost any other part of the country--except maybe for Utah. I've been here four times and am always both excited to come and slightly disappointed when I've spent some time here. I really want it to be a mall, even though that would ruin in. I reminds me a lot of my childhood and the randomness of the three malls in Carmel, California, before rents got so high that regular places like stationery stores and ice-cream shops and stores that sold mostly flowerpots and gardening equipment could no longer afford to exist there. Davis Mercantile is nothing like any of those three malls, really, but they're connected in my mind. I want in-person shopping to be as fun and random and normal as it used to be.

We loved the statue so much that they went back to Shipshewana a few months later to get a statue of a little girl feeding the birds. Not to mention, we live in Michigan so for my grandparents to travel about 5 hours in one day for a statue is very unusual.

On our way back out of town I saw Brandenberry and asked my husband to turn the car around. Well SO glad we did. I found a bench I had been hunting for plus fell in love with a beautiful leather sofa and love seat. Price was right, furniture was plush and comfy. So we did not wait and bought it on the spot (was afraid it'd be gone if I waiting until after the holidays). I just wish I had needed my whole house refurnished :) I also want to note when the furniture was delivered there was a tiny hole on a part of the sofa. The team was fantastic to work with and decided to replace the back instead of repairing. The newly made back was delivered yesterday. Trust me, you do not find customer service like this anymore. I had phone calls and emails keeping me updated on the progress. Would I buy from them again...in a heart beat!

A blend of Amish/Mennonite decorations, dolls, quilts, and other beautiful gifts made locally. Also various Christmas decorations like my favorite, the Possible Dream Santa's. I have been collecting the Santa's since my mother got me started long sgo. I will often pick a few up during my summer trip at half price. They will also ship them home for a small price so I don't have to worry about trying to make room on the plane. The place is ran by locals to the community and you can't ask for better people. Again, if you have not been to Shipshewana during the holidays then you are really missing out. Make it a family experience and have an old fashion country Christmas. They have 2 inns which are like stepping back in time but yet they have all your English World requirements. They won't take your cell phone away, or make you go with out your TV. I would suggest you visit one of the local stores and buy everyone an Amish outfit to wear Christmas Day. Gather your family around the fireplace in the Inn or one of the beautiful Christmas trees. Some great opportunities for some awesome pictures. Take a ride around town to see the Christmas lights and decorations. If you're lucky you can experience a Indiana/Michigan white Christmas.

We did find a cute arrow sign for our place that my hubby bought, although I'm unsure where we will put it. I had my eye on a coffee table and dining table, but we will have to save for those items as they were very pricey. The worker wasn't much of a talker and awkwardly stared at us while we shopped. It made us a touch uncomfortable, but we loved the store so we continued shopping until we found something we wanted. She only spoke once we paid and when my husband asked if everything was hand crafted. I would come back but I am not rushing back to be stared at.
