It's not an Amish mall, but it is a strange sort of mall in Amish country. It's a difficult place to describe, so I won't really try to describe it, but it feels like a 1980s mall designed in the 1880s. A multilevel building with completely separate stores that allows a person to go from store to store without ever leaving the building? Complete with a directory of where the stores are within the building? And a place to eat while shopping? Well, friends, that's Davis Mercantile in Shipshewana. There are about twenty stores on four levels. They're really random stores, too. Like those random stores at real malls, the non-chain ones that seemed to hang on despite the fact that they didn't get as much business. They cater mostly to tourists, but places like Lolly's Fabrics probably also probably do much better with the locals here than they would in almost any other part of the country--except maybe for Utah. I've been here four times and am always both excited to come and slightly disappointed when I've spent some time here. I really want it to be a mall, even though that would ruin in. I reminds me a lot of my childhood and the randomness of the three malls in Carmel, California, before rents got so high that regular places like stationery stores and ice-cream shops and stores that sold mostly flowerpots and gardening equipment could no longer afford to exist there. Davis Mercantile is nothing like any of those three malls, really, but they're connected in my mind. I want in-person shopping to be as fun and random and normal as it used to be. read more

This is a marketplace in the heart of Shipshewena. It is an old building with 4 floors of unique shops. Parking was easy on the street outside as we came here for the last hour they were open. We started at the bottom floor at the music store and worked our way up. There is also a restaurant here that had some basic food. The building itself was cool, and my favorite part was the working carousel, which was bigger than I thought it would be, on the top floor. It is amazing how it is fitted there. It was open, but no one was riding it and the price to ride is reasonable. Otherwise, I wasn't too impressed with the shops and feel that being outside would have been a better option. Although if raining, this would be your spot! read more

Love to wander these stores, and we always eat at Millie's. There is something for everyone.

My go to spot for Shipshewana adventures. I've been coming to this mall for decades and have loved every visit. Jojo's pretzels is definitely a must stop, but the awesomeness just starts there. There is a lower level, main level and 2 upper levels. Bathrooms are a bit far apart, one being located in the lower level and the other being on the 3rd floor. I personally like the tree that is around the stairs, something I've had many photos taken by over the course of almost 3 decades. The carousel has to be the other big draw the this mall. It is located on the top floor, and conveniently close to the toy store. The entire mall is a delightful place that I have always looked forward to going to and I'm so glad coming to Davis Mercantile will become a regular thing for me again. I also love that they feature mostly locally made things and small businesses. I've always loved shopping local and it's fun doing it at a mall. Can't wait to come back. read more

This mercantile building apparently dates to 1989 ... and was just recently refurbished. It was beautiful inside and clean as can be. All to say, our visit was a neat experience and the building houses many fine stores. It has 18 stores spread throughout four floors, and you have to wind your way around a bit to get to them all. But do so as this vertical mall is a lot of fun. They have food stops, coffee shops, clothing, sporting goods, and more. We stopped in at Lolly's Fabrics and saw their exceptional goods. Fabrics, quilts, and all sorts of needle arts supplies here. We ended up buying a really beautiful quilt. Expect to drop a few hundred for something like that, but you can also expect to have a quality product. Many local products (like our quilt), and a nice sense of history and what put Shipshewana on the map. Recommended. read more

This is a really cool store, merry-go-round on the 3rd floor and lots of cool shops. The candy store on the top is not to be missed.

I was very impressed by each if the stores i went into. I saw so many unique things. If you are looking for a gift, this is the place to go. Davis Mercantile is a mall of sorts. They have a coffee shop, a pretzel shop, and many unique stores from fabric shops to clothing to sporting goods and Knick knacks. There really is something for everyone on three stories. The stairwell is amazing and the entire place is spotless, just beautiful. Don't worry if you don't like stairs, I think I spotted two elevators. Davis Mercantile is just the tip of the iceberg for cool places to check out in Shipshewana. read more

Visiting Davis Mercantile is like stepping back in time. This is like a mall built from hand, with unique shops and restaurants. Any visit to Indiana requires a visit here. We love to ride the beautiful, hand build carousel. Then explore the unique toy store. We love the soft pretzels and Jojos! This place is lovely and well maintained - oh so clean.
