It's not an Amish mall, but it is a strange sort of mall in Amish country. It's a difficult place…read moreto describe, so I won't really try to describe it, but it feels like a 1980s mall designed in the 1880s. A multilevel building with completely separate stores that allows a person to go from store to store without ever leaving the building? Complete with a directory of where the stores are within the building? And a place to eat while shopping? Well, friends, that's Davis Mercantile in Shipshewana. There are about twenty stores on four levels. They're really random stores, too. Like those random stores at real malls, the non-chain ones that seemed to hang on despite the fact that they didn't get as much business. They cater mostly to tourists, but places like Lolly's Fabrics probably also probably do much better with the locals here than they would in almost any other part of the country--except maybe for Utah. I've been here four times and am always both excited to come and slightly disappointed when I've spent some time here. I really want it to be a mall, even though that would ruin in. I reminds me a lot of my childhood and the randomness of the three malls in Carmel, California, before rents got so high that regular places like stationery stores and ice-cream shops and stores that sold mostly flowerpots and gardening equipment could no longer afford to exist there. Davis Mercantile is nothing like any of those three malls, really, but they're connected in my mind. I want in-person shopping to be as fun and random and normal as it used to be.

My mom went to Eash Sales to surprise me with a 5ft wooden A-frame swing. After consulting with…read morethe sales staff and double checking that the item would be delivered fully built - she agreed to purchase the item for $609, plus a $300 delivery charge. The delivery came, but we were told that only the swing itself comes assembled- the A-frame to house the swing did not. Upon calling the store, we spoke to Marty, owner/manager, who confirmed this, and said he did not know where the miscommunication occurred but implying it was my mom and son who heard wrong. Nonetheless, the swing was put together by the delivery guy. When my mom asked for a loyal customer token of appreciation for all the chaos and miscommunication, Marty basically called her integrity and character into question and claimed she had been planning this entire interaction for compensation. I was appalled that a long time customer would be treated this way, and I am extremely disappointed. Whatever happened to treating a customer with kindness and valuing their loyalty?

The buildings were once barns and homestead housing of an old farm. They stand in a semi-circle which frames a makeshift courtyard hold art that relates to its original purpose. This configuration makes a natural connection between the shops, a traffic flow guiding visitors in the front of one shop and out the side where the next awaits. Out front was a horse and buggy. It was a large horse. I don't know whether this was part of the places decoration or an Amish visitor or employee. For the shopper that likes old-timey styles this place will be loved. Of most impressive are expensive but craftily handmade quilts sold in the last building. I am not into Amish country fashion, but the tour of these shops reveal its quality to me anyways. A nice place to visit.
