It has taken me some time to get around to writing this review as I was, quite frankly, pretty upset after having had a manicure here back in the beginning of April. While I prefer to generally do my own at-home manis/pedis and gels, I have had professional manicures and pedicures before, of varying results, but never as horrible as this experience was.
The only reason I went was because I had received, as a gift from my husband, a promo gift card for 2 free basic manicures, 2 free basic pedicures and 1 free waxing. Options to add extra for fees. He had been pretty excited about it since we are at this time a bit tight on money, he wanted to pamper me, and it could have been a great deal for about $60.
When I went in, only the owner and a newer girl who had been hired a month or so before, in February, was there. The owner left to go run some errands so it was just the newer girl left in the place, who was the one doing my manicure.
At the time my nails were a bit short and weak as I had not been caring for them much over the last couple months and well, they are naturally that way. I think I was too stunned when she pulled out the drill to say anything (you should never let someone drill your natural nail plate - and it is not like I even had any acrylics or glue to even out, my nails were bare!).
Maybe I was giving her the benefit of the doubt thinking she was only going to lightly buff, I don't know as I am still kicking myself for not walking out right at that moment. It was only later after the polish was removed I saw how much of my nail plate she removed in the spots she had drilled. I WAS able to almost immediately see when she was done drilling that she had shredded my eponychium (the living skin around nail that produces the cuticle) so that there were several areas that were raw and bleeding. She basically ignored it and acted like that was totally normal!
She then proceeded to apply a horribly goopy polish, complainting about the polish the entire time. She put some acetone in the polish to thin it out saying she had "heard that works" (which is a no no, they make polish thinner for this reason....I have hundreds of polishes at home, and they can last forever with proper storage and the occasional addition of some polish thinner). From my angle and the way the light shone I could not see well what was going on as she polished, but once she was done I could easily see she did a TERRIBLE job. The polish was lumpy and messy, and there was even polish on my skin which she did not clean up: a 2-year old could have done a better job. The irony was she kept saying how picky she was about polishing nails.
In addition to complaining about the polishes they had, my manicurist also complained about her ex-boyfriend, told me all about her current boyfriend, and so on. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy engaging in conversation when I am getting my hair done, nails done, etc, but it was a lot of complaining and well, it just came across as very unprofessional and immature. She was young, yes, but even keeping that in mind I was cringing throughout that entire conversation.
After I left, with my raw and bleeding fingers, I proceeded to go home and remove all the polish immediately (I was not comfortable being out in public with those nails!) at which time I saw the damage to my nail plates which is still growing out. My nails were tender and painful for several days, as was the wounds around them, and I was worried about an infection (I had surgery a couple months before so was still at slight risk of infection through open wounds). This was the worst manicure I ever had, not just in appearance, but in terms of comfort, enjoyment, and so on. I had been really looking forward to it too, after a few difficult months for myself and family.
Add on, the place feels and looks dirty and cluttered. It looks they are trying to sell a few things out of there that just cheapens the look of the place, and there were a few pamphlets around for various MLMs (turn off for me).
I will NOT be going back. I would not recommend anyone go here, there are FAR better places in Lethbridge. I also feel pretty bad for my husband who just wanted to do something nice for me and while the thought counts, the money was wasted.
The plus side? This experience inspired me to get back to doing my at home manicures again and growing my nails back out long and healthy, and I can report that they are already looking pretty darn good. I can't wait until the damage from this "professional" manicure is finally grown out. read more
