Flying a hellichopper for the first time is like trying to balance a full martini while riding a unicycle! Which, is not nearly as easy as it sounds. I couldn't find a review page for AM Air Service (also at Schaumburg Airport) on Yelp so this will have to do since Chris Bachman, the man behind Bachman Aero, runs AM Air Service as well. The difference between the introductory helicopter flight in Bachman Aero and AM Air Service is the kind of helicopter you fly. With AM Air Service, you get to fly a Hughes 369A which can hold 3 people plus the pilot, whereas the helicopter used in Bachman Aero is a Hughes 269 and can only hold 1 person besides the pilot. I did the AM Air Service's 30 min flight session which cost $375 whereas if I had done the Bachman Aero one, it would've cost around $150 (a lot of groupon ads for this one). The reason why I did the AM Air Service one was because I am in the middle of creating a movie and wanted shots of me flying a helicopter. And AM Air Service was the only one that let me bring a passenger along (you can ONLY bring just 1 other passenger even though there's room for 2 in the back...probably has to do with safety regulations). So I flew the helicopter in the front while my brave girlfriend did a fantastic job at holding the GoPro cam with her dear life getting the best angle shots. Now for the actual experience... We arrived about 15 mins late (which I felt really bad about since the directions tell you to arrive 15 mins early) but Chris Bachman, our pilot was super chill about it! Right away, I knew that this was going to be a really pleasant experience. Chill people are the best. It took us only 2 mins after arriving at the airport to park the car, and get inside the helicopter! Chris sat next to me up front and explained all the controls and dials. Then he started the engine and within minutes, we were airborne! And holy crap, it was sensational. Pure joy. Oh yeah, and might I remind you all the doors were open, so when the helicopter did sharp turns, your seatbelt became your best friend. After a several minutes of further explaining the controls, Chris told me to take the controls and I flew it (with some difficulty at first) over a highway and past some of the most peaceful and affluent neighborhoods I've seen. You think that it's easy to control a helicopter until you actually have to do so. The control is extremely sensitive and will definitely take time to get used to for a lot of us. But this just added to the experience. Not going to lie, but I felt really cool talking on the headset and following a highway down below me. Felt like I was reporting a highway chase. After flying for about 25 mins, we made our way back to the airport and land gracefully. He asked us if we had any questions and after a little more talking, we were on our way back home. All under an hour! It was definitely one of the coolest (if not the coolest) things we had in our life. Chris Bachman really knows his stuff and makes sure you have the best time while you're there. So if whoever is reading this wants to fly a helicopter, Chris Bachman is definitely your guy! Cool experience. Bought my hubz a Groupon for a flight lesson and did it today. Jake the instructor was cool, used to fly in the Marines, friendly & experienced. Would recommend for a gift for someone that has everything based on my husbands fave when he landed. Bonus... it was nice out so he got to fly with the doors off!! Only drawback, the owner/Schedueler (?) had us get there at 9:30 for a 10am flight.... didn't get picked up until 9:59, so I was worried we would miss it Bc we didn't see anyone. read more

Bought a Groupon. Attempting to schedule an appointment. No one ever answers the phone. Left several voice mails with no call backs. Complete waste of time. Potential scam too if I don't get a refund from Groupon. UPDATE (Early November 2017): I finally got through to someone and scheduled my intro flight. The experience was awesome. I have to update my list of the top amazing feelings. One more to add, so now it goes something like this... 1. Flying a helicopter 2. Flying an airplane 3. Really good sex 4. Driving a stock car around Chicagoland Speedway at 155 mph 5. Average sex So, I recently decided if flying an airplane is amazing then flying a helicopter must be f'ing amazing. I made an appointment for a flying lesson with Bachman Aero and started getting excited. I showed up a little early for my appointment at the Schaumburg airport and Chris met me in the waiting area. He had me sign a waiver and then sat with me and my brother and sis in law while we waited. He was very nice, helpful, an ready to chat about helicopters, flying, and the airport in general. The actual flying lesson was a blast. Randy was part tour guide part instructor. He explained how everything worked, let me take the cyclic and let me do most of the flying for our 45 minutes in the air. I'm considering quiting my day job and becoming a helicopter pilot. Plus, Randy said I was a natural (I'm sure he says that to all the girls). He did an excellent job of balancing allowing me to have fun and not letting me kill us both. Helicopter flying lessons or sightseeing trips are as expensive as you assume they are. If you've got some spare change (ha!) laying around, definitely give Chris and his team a call. I wasn't expecting too much when I signed up for a helicopter lesson, but I was extremely impressed with what I got. I anticipated being allowed to hold the controls for a few minutes after the instructor took us out. Boy was I wrong. Right after taking off, the instructor (Chris) said "let's try some hovering". After a couple minutes of me failing to keep the helicopter in one place, Chris took us higher and to the north. After we started heading in the right direction, he let go of the controls completely (except for the foot pedals which kept us from spinning) and just told me what to do. It was pretty amazing. Totally worth the money. The instructors are all really nice, easy going and make you feel very comfortable in an extraordinary situation. read more

Had a great experience with Bachman yesterday for my groupon flight. Arrived, Chris greeted me after a while, ran through the basics and then we went out. Pilot on my trip was Randy who was a great guy. Jumped in and took the controls within 2 minutes---he gave a great overview of all the instrumentation and the basics. Got comfortable within a few minutes after those first initial jitters. Flew around for 20-30 minutes or so and then it was done. Can't complain for $120-130 bucks. Definitely would go back for a longer trip. Very courteous guys, would recommend to anyone who is looking for a nice afternoon. read more

This was a BLAST!!! I did a lot more flying than I had anticipated. From pretty much the moment we got off the ground he was giving me the controls to figure out how the helicopter responded. We went through a lot of technical patterns and I learned all about the gauges and steering of the aircraft. The instructor, Chris, was very laid back, informative and friendly. His demeanor throughout the flight was very calming, a nice attribute when you are 500 feet in the air! I would definitely recommend this to anyone with the desire to learn how to fly a helicopter. Awesome experience, a friend and I went in and Chris and Ryan took us up flying at the same time in two helicopters (which was great, we were able to take pictures of each other flying). I didn't expect to get to control the helicopter much, but not long after we took off I was offered the controls. It was amazing, we flew all around Barrington and Chris let me practice turns and changing altitude while explaining everything along the way. I've ridden in many helicopters in my life, but controlling one is ten times better. I will definitely go back, I recommend you go in and try it if you haven't already! read more

We had purchased a 30 minute flight for our 16 year old son - he LOVED it! Chris was his pilot and my son was able to fly the entire time (with the exception of take off and landing) - he really enjoyed himself - he said that Chris made him feel comfortable and they just had a nice conversation - very laid back which put my son at ease. Chris even asked if we were going to take pictures and told us that he would turn the helicopter around when they took off so we could get a better shot of them. As a mother, I was nervous, but after having my son talk about it - I am glad that we did this for him. We will keep them in mind when our daughter turns 16! I had a great time on an introductory flight with John and Bachman Aero. After showing me the basics, we took off and he taught me how to hover. Well, I think I'd have a long way to go to actually succeed, but after he took the controls back, we had a great flight around the area, with demonstrations of the helicopter's capabilities. My kids purchased the 30 minute flight for my birthday. I always want to learn how to fly. My first exposure was the TV Series "Whirlybirds". Now that I gave away my age, the kids thought it was on my bucket list - and probably was. My first exposure got rained out and Chris rescheduled. This past Sunday, Ryan met me, my family and yes some of my friends. He gave me preflight instructions. Warmed up the bird and away we went. Not even two minutes he asked and I took over the cyclic stick. The wind was about 20 MPH. He contoled the rudder to keep us on course. Oh yes, I did remember to breath. We did some turns with no issues and before you know it, we had returned to the crowd (family and friends waiting). They permitted some photo ops. Instructions were soft spoken, easy to understand. Now if my family and friends would pay for lessons and license, I would be set. If you have the chance, don't let being scared, get in your way. They are good instructors and seem to be part of the family. read more

I've been doing my training with Bachman Aero for a little under a year now and can't say enough good things about every aspect of my experience. Everyone at Bachman Aero is friendly, helpful, and very very knowledgeable. I came to them with no aviation experience whatsoever other than having been on the occasional helicopter tour when traveling on vacations. In a very short amount of time, after training with John I gained a tremendous amount of knowledge and was already out flying solo. As far as training goes, there is no other place around that will train to the standards that are set at Bachman Aero. Countless times I have heard the phrase "we train to a commercial standard", meaning even if your're only there to get a private pilot license, you will have the knowledge, skills, and ability that will surpass just about any private pilot from anywhere else. For me, I think what has made my experience so good, is that my instructor John, was able to adapt to my learning style. He found what works and what doesn't work for me, so when it comes time to practice certain maneuvers with the helicopter, he knows exactly what mistakes I'm going to make before I even make them, and teaches me how to correct it. If you've ever thought of becoming a helicopter pilot and living out that childhood dream like myself, Bachman Aero is the best place to get started.
