I was eagerly anticipating entering Babcock for months. Sadly, it seemed as if every time I arrived, they happened to be closed. When I finally was able to get inside those big doors, I was kind of underwhelmed. They have a lot of seriously pricey dishes, vases, platters and the like. In fact, I wouldn't call this place a "gift shop" I would call it the "bridal registry central." You see, Babcock is filled to the brims with those nonsensical things that we as women are told we "must" register for. You all have them. The china that sits unused in your cabinet or basement, the silver platter you should really just serve up a frozen pizza and Fritos on cuz that's what you tend to eat for dinner, not pot roasts and quiches. I perused the aisles aimlessly, trying to find something, anything that caught my eye. For the most part, I thought everything was horribly overpriced, and in the way of gifts, seriously lacking a lot of thought. I don't tend to buy my friends or family gifts simply because it was made by some fabulous company or designer. Instead, I buy them things I know they will use and love. Don't get me wrong, I am sure there are folks who love them some Babcock gifts, I am not one of those gals. It's a little too fancy and classy for this gal. I was also really annoyed by the overabundance of sales women following me around the store. There were about 7 of them. (Seriously?! Does it get that crowded to warrant 7 sales women in a store that size?) They kept asking if they could help or show me something, and I got really annoyed. I actually cut my visit short because of it. I told them all numerous times I was just looking and would let them know if I needed any help. I will say on a positive note that Babcock has some amazing candles. Amazing. The scents are to die for and they are wrapped up ever so fabulously in little boxes and bows. But, it ends there, cuz at $35 bucks a candle, I think not. It's literally like burning your money.

I could easily spend a small fortune at Babcock's. I never fail to find about 10 items that I immediately want to scoop up and take straight to the counter. I love the selection of soaps, candles and lotions- the Seda France candles are so beautifully packaged and smell lovely. They're great to give as gifts, but you'll find lots of other gift items here too, such as cute Scout tote bags, Arthur Court serving pieces, personalized tumblers, and adorable little enamel trinket boxes. Need a baby shower gift? Pick up a Bella Bliss blanket or an engraved rattle. You'll also find beautiful fine china and stemware here, from trusted brands like Waterford, Lenox, Spode and Wedgwood.

Not as good as the old Babcock. Less personal attention and few local artists, no local potters.

My new favorite Memphis gift shop is no exception. Nest manages to cram a well-organized and thoughtful stock of housewares, gifts, baby items, jewelry and dishes into their tiny Germantown space. The building, which looks more like a wee cabin than a storefront is only 12 feet by 16 feet. Inside, though, gift items (many of them appropriately tiny) are arranged floor to ceiling. Be sure to look down - some very cool things are hiding on low shelves. What I liked most about Nest is that because of the space's size, everything in the shop seems like it was stocked with intention - there's aren't any items that don't belong. I loved the tiny spoons, vintage silverware bundles, shabby chic textiles and selection of cute necklaces (that range in price from crazy reasonable to fairly high end). And despite it's size, Nest is the sort of place that would probably have a gift for even the pickiest people. Next time I need something for my mom or a hard-to-buy-for lady friend, this is where I'm going. A word of warning before you head to Nest: it's really hard to find on Google Maps alone. The easiest way to get there is to head east on Poplar (towards Germantown). Turn right into The Market at Poplar Estates - it sort of looks like a garden center. Keep going once you turn in, and Nest will be on your left.

This is the BEST gift shop in town. I shop here for all gifts for others as well as myself…read more There has never been a time that I did not gone into this shop and not find anything. They have unique items that other shops don't have. It is my "go to place" for gifts.

Sure, you…read morecan get cheaper things at department stores, but there is something about visiting a boutique, being waited on with a smile and getting something only a few people have. No worries, Memphians. I have found a jewelry boutique I love! A friend of mine took me to a small boutique in Laurelwood shopping center called Turkoyz. While I had my hesitations, mainly because I thought it might be overpriced and even more because turquoise is not spelled with a "y" or "z" (I'm a big proponent of correct spelling), I went with her anyways. She went on and on about how much jewelry they had and what great prices there were. And, yes, she was right! The store is filled with all types of jewelry, scarves, purses, wallets, home decor and more. I bought over half of my Christmas gifts in there, and I keep buying! They have great pieces, and it's one of my favorite places to shop. Consider buying your next piece of jewelry or gift for a friend there. You will love what they have! Warning: Men, this is not a place for you to browse and find things that interest you. However, I guarantee a woman in your life would love for you to take her there.

They have home items, scarves, ALL kinds of jewelry, purses, and so much more! They have the neatest stuff around Christmas and holidays. I guarantee you'll find something - whether it's for yourself or a friend. One of my favorite things about this place is the build your own necklace or bracelet table they have. You pick out your chain (silver or gold) and then add the charms. They have initials, different colored charms, sorority charms, etc. These make perfect gifts for any woman or girl in your life! I wished I had discovered this place before I got married - perfect bridesmaid gifts. :) Turkoyz is conveniently located in the Laurelwood Shopping Center off Poplar and they have the friendliest staff. They also just opened a Turkoyz at Home store in the shopping center as well. It has all home items.

If you need a place for beautiful flower arrangements in Memphis, Garden District is the place!…read moreDuring the pandemic, they started an outdoor pop up shop with flower arrangements from $10-$100 that they made each day. While they have moved back indoors, they still continue the pop up arrangements each day that you can walk in and purchase. They also make custom arrangements. I've called them several times with an arrangement request. I either can reference an arrangement they have on their website, or I have told them how much I want to spend and the type of flowers that I want, and they make something for me. Every time I've had them do the arrangements, they turn out beautifully! Good sized arrangements normally range from $60-$100, but they last for a solid week. They do delivery as well as pick up, and I've been able to call them with 24 hours of a request and get an order. Also, their shop is beautiful! In addition to the pop up arrangements, they have several home goods and seasonal decorations you can buy. They also do event work. I haven't had them do anything for me for an event, so I don't know the prices. But I've seen their work on Instagram and it looks beautiful!
