I didn't think I was going to be all that impressed with Poundtown (despite it being the original…read morepound shop, before the big boys Poundland / Poundworld came to NI), but this was before I knew what I was going to find there. And that was four sheets of wrapping paper for a pound. Yes, my life is now complete! Just kiddin' folks. I'm not that sad, but a) I needed wrapping paper, and my dad keeps buying that really crap stuff that tears as soon as you attempt to cut it, and b) this stuff was pretty and very good quality. How could I resist, you ask? Ha, well the answer to that is, I didn't. I picked up four bars of this caramel chocolate stuff that everyone in my house seems to love, also for a pound (got to keep them happy somehow), and then decided that would do me. I could / would have happily dandered round for longer, but I was totally aware of the fact that I was already carrying several heavy bags, and I'm not really built for lugging weights around. There is always the danger that I'll end up buying extravagant numbers of anything and everything at a pound, so to stop myself at this stage was difficult, but had to be done. Wrapping paper anyone?

Strictly not everything is a pound in Pound Town so that is quite misleading but most of the items…read moreare there or thereabouts. This is a typical seaside shop, it has a net bag of "fly away" footballs hanging on the left of the doorway and on the other side has multicoloured buckets and spades. In fact there is more outside the shop than there is in it. You can get anything from this cosy little shop, that's if you can find what you want. Everything is everywhere but that gives it a certain charm. It provides a special service in the town as the brick-a-brack shop. Its main qualities are that it sells seaside goods that wont leave you out of pocket, so if you want to build an impromptu sand castle in Donaghadee but don't have a bucket and spade get yourself to Pound Town. But expect to pay around £1.26.

For me, I usually feel uncomfortable buying food that has a shorter date. I don't know why. Perhaps it is because there is a chance I could get ill. Or perhaps it is because I am a snob. Either way, I like to buy food that has a longer date because when it is on offer I buy it to keep it in the house. Best Sellers means that whenever you buy the food, you kind of have to have it straight away which doesn't suit me. Not a favourite of mine but some people love a bargain

I always wondered how he got so much food there. So one day I ventured to Best Sellers. I was amazed. Bottled water for 20p? Crisps for 10p? Soup for 50p? Then I took a look at the expiration dates on the food. Oh. That's what's going on here. But if that doesn't bother you, then Best Sellers is your place. And, really, how can water go out of date? Not all the stuff is out of date. They also have a dairy and frozen food selection that is thankfully in date. I don't think any place would last too long selling out of date milk. Even in Belfast. Some of the food is just...unusual and this is where it winds up. I expect to see a whole lot of those Walker's World Cup flavour crisps here pretty soon...

The prices are very reasonable although some items can be bought elsewhere at cheaper price but that's not to say that you can't find that proverbial wee bargain! It never attracted me because I imagined it would be full of cheaper-quality clothes and pound shop quality home wares. I was right! My sister made me go as she loves a bargain. We stopped off and walked into this huge cave of a place - a mixture of ladies, gents and children's clothing. There were groceries, household products, sports equipment, jewelry and pet store products. I trawled through lots of different clothes, some marked with stickers that say 'This garment was produced for a popular high street store' - I guess they have a small amount of factory seconds but most of the products are too expensive for customers looking for a bargain. I did buy one top for £7.00 so I was happy enough. My sister, who usually loves shops like this, thought it was full of things you could buy in the pound shop for half the price. I won't be back.

They stock a nice range of Original Source shower gels which I love as they are superb quality, vegan, made in the UK, not tested on animals and a bargain at only 99p. Plus there are cooking, curry, BBQ sauces and gravies all suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The selection of food is vast and includes sweets, cereals, biscuits, chocolates, jams, pasta, noodles, soups, tinned food and crisps etc. This particular B&M is large, tidy and well laid out with plenty of space in the aisles for browsing. It's really pleasant to walk around as there's great air conditioning unlike other similar stores which can be stuffy. Staff are also extremely helpful and efficient. In-store music is not irritating, which is a huge bonus. I enjoy browsing Armagh B&M and can spend ages pottering around it. Everything household and gardening related is stocked at low prices. Ornaments, curtains, picture frames, mirrors, cooking utensils, pots, pans, ironing boards, toasters, kids toys, storage boxes, garden furniture, bed linen, cleaning and pet products just to mention a few items. Definitely the best bargain store I have visited to date.

How I love that shop, with its shoes and home wares and clothes and jewellery and stuff, stuff, stuff. Always a bargain to be had - I even lugged a huge chest of drawers out of there once. After paying for it of course. Curse those efficient security guards. There is a branch of every high street shop you can think of - Mothercare, Pets at Home, M&S, Tesco, JJB Sports, Matalan to name a few. I always like a look around Matalan where there are some bargains in ladies and children's clothes and a selection of birthday cards and invitations which has to be seen to be believed. Make a quick pit stop in McDs and you'll be ready for round 2 in the shopping centre itself. The Abbey Centre is pretty big, with several different 'wings' coming off the central point. Highlights for me are River Island, the bargain emporium that is Primark, Top Shop and Wallis. Apart from clothes, I also like going to the Abbey Centre for books - Stewart Miller and Easons always have offers on new releases. Chick lit I'm afraid to admit but someone has to read them.

There are many shops here to suit all pockets, from sport shops, to fashion clothing, from banks to mobile phone and gaming shops, from card and gift shops to butchers, you will get pretty much anything you want at the Abbeycentre, without the headache travelling into the city centre can bring. There is even a new Poundland store for some of the old bargain hunting. And long may it continue!
