We are not the only parents who think so, so does the preschool class of 2010. And don't forget to read the "filtered reviews" for this business. They are very insightful and informative.

The management at this school/daycare are very, very unprofessional…read more The teachers are excellent and genuine. We attended the 2009/2010 preschool year for one child. We were hoping to attend the 2010/2011 year for two of our children. WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING. Here's why..... The RecRoom, though somewhat pretentious, seemed like an appropriate choice for our family. Our choice was mostly based on location. Since we only operate one vehicle, we could walk. We are a modest income family, and were hoping to register our other children at this school as well. Now we can't. We were told to pay a certain fee for Summer Preschool. We wrote and signed cheques and got them in by the given deadline. A week later, all the parents were returned their post dated checks, the fees were hiked by 35%, and we were told if we wanted our kids to attend September classes, we HAD to attend Summer Preschool with the new fee schedule, or lose your spot. We felt handcuffed. The September classes have been hiked as well by 20%, all within this week. (They say it's for HST cost's. Seems like a cash grab to us.) Also, an added sting, two days later we were asked to participate in a fund raiser for new toys and equipment for outside ($4500 worth). It seems to me, the RecRoom has too many fingers in different pies. Yoga? Kids Martial Arts? Do you like the website?, it's all new this year. It doesn't come cheap. Ever hired models or a photographer? How about a Graphic Designer? (all costs thousands.) The old website was fine. (maybe you should have spent some of that money on new toys and equipment for outside!) As well, in our newsletter, parents were informed a second location may be in the works because of the large wait-list for the RecRoom. We are given the option to "partner-in" for an investment with a return. No thanks. For the RecRoom, it's less about "quality" and more about "quantity". They boast about teaching kids manners and values. Maybe they should acquire some for themselves first. Too bad for the Teachers, they are fantastic. In the end, it's our kids who loose out. We have to break off relationships they had with their teachers, students and other families who attend the RecRoom. That's when we try to explain to our kids why they can't go anymore. Sucks. (Hopefully Farah and Dan, you will never have to make that decision.)

I brought my concerns to management, and they were ignored. To be fair there were a few positives: Margaret was very kind and loving with our son, and we really appreciate that. The manager Katy was also well-intentioned too, although she had limited power to change anything and she was mostly just following "the rules" as well. If you want an accurate review, join the Burke Mountain Mommies group and ask the moms there. I'm sure you'll hear lots of stories. Here's what didn't sit right with us: 1. Parents are allowed to enter the facility without masks. At our old daycare, parents had to ring the doorbell and a teacher would bring their child outside. No parents were permitted to enter the facility. Not the case at BrightStart. 2. We noticed a family doing a tour without masks. The center claims "the family had health issues preventing them from wearing a mask," but I find this claim highly suspect. The entire family had the same health issue? I find that hard to believe. 3. The daycare doesn't do temperature checks for teachers and children and parents entering the facility. Why not? Temperature checks aren't a panacea--and some people won't show symptoms--but it's one more step to protect kids and teachers. Why not consider this if your daycare has Covid? They were very resistant when I mentioned the idea. 4. The teachers were offering communal snacks in one giant bowl to the toddlers. (Who does this during a pandemic?!) All of the toddlers could lick their fingers, stick 'em back in the bowl, and spread their germs to each other. They claimed that communal snacks should be offered in individual portions, but the daycare camera told a different story altogether. 5. Apparently, upon Fraser Health's recommendation, the teachers who were exposed (those that worked on the same day as the infected teacher) were permitted to continue working. This was beyond concerning. 6. It was a HUGE struggle to get them to agree to give our son his appropriate nap (1 hour) vs. 1.5 - 2 hours. I get that they want their breaks, but they let him oversleep and he was staying up till 10 or 11PM at night. It was such a hassle to get them to "bend the rules." Our new daycare has no problem at all accommodating our son's shorter nap. One of the teachers was borderline aggressive when I tried to negotiate a compromise. (If she's angry, I don't blame her. The management of this facility is the WORST.) 7. The toddler space sucks. It's a really small room, and the toddlers are so crammed in there, tripping over each other. The sleep area is one side of the room, toddlers lined up on mats. If your kid doesn't like being crowded, this isn't an ideal space.

To any of you who are considering to send your kids in Brightstart, be very careful how much money…read morethey may take from you during this special pandemic time, and pray for your kids not being sick of COVID! Here is why: My daughter had stayed in the daycare from July 2020 until mid October when suddenly we were called by Fraser Health and notified that my daughter was in contact with a positive COVID-19 teacher from the daycare. Then we were forced to stay at home for quarantine for 2 weeks, not able to send her in, but continued paying for full month tuition with no discount. After the breakout, all teachers are still not wearing masks while taking care of our kids. Due to this breakout that the daycare should be responsible for, and no extra precautions the daycare had taken afterwards, we made very hard decision to withdraw my daughter. We weren't able to give the daycare withdrawal notice a full month ahead because no one would expect this breakout to happen. However, we are now asked to pay for another full month tuition for November even though we have stopped sending my daughter since Oct 13. A full month notification is stated in the agreement, I am well aware. But who can predict the daycare will let a COVID-positive teacher be in close contact with our kids?! We emailed the daycare and went to the office. The staff who spoke to us was nice and polite. However I am stunned how little support Brightstart would give to parents and families during this stressful time. They have been robbing us just to protect their own profitability. Again, no support, no extra precautions under COVID. BE CAREFUL!! -Jamie
