I live down in Ferndale, and in July 2020, our basement got hit with the second round of…read morecatastrophic flooding in the last six years. Cool. After professional cleanup, the headache of dealing with an insurance adjuster, and the due diligence of meeting with multiple contractors to get bids on putting the basement back together, we went with Rentz Remodeling and Contracting. And wow. The difference between someone like Matt Rentz and other contractors we've dealt with has been night and day. A selfish part of me wants to keep this knowledge to myself, in case we need him again, but he's too good NOT to share. First of all, his bid was extremely fair. Since we were dealing with repairs and not an elective home remodel, we didn't have a ton of money set aside. Just what was left of insurance after a not-great cleanup crew charged us through the nose. Matt detailed out everything he would do to fix the basement, with line items for both labor and cost of materials. There was no guessing or having to ask for more detail; he came prepared with paperwork and was always extremely open about what everything cost. Secondly, he and his crew were incredibly polite and professional. In a pandemic, having new people in your house is always a little anxiety-provoking. The first thing they did when they arrived is put up a plastic zip door between the basement stairs and the rest of the house. And they never came through it into the main house. We worked out a system where he would text if he needed to ask any questions, which meant I could go anywhere in the house without worrying that I couldn't hear them if they needed anything. But for the most part, they came and went according to the needs of the work, and I didn't have to do much of anything at all. Thirdly, Matt and his crew are not just great contractors, but good guys. We had a problem with the hose discharge line for our sump pump freezing over during a cold snap, so my husband had temporarily removed it. Matt noticed and pointed out that he'd seen excess water leak through basement walls before, and texted with me about potential solutions we could try ourselves to keep it functional through the winter. Not an upsell--but just because he had knowledge he thought we could use. I'd recommend Rentz Remodeling and Contracting to anyone. (I've already given his name to a few friends.) And the next time we need anything done around the house, these guys are at the top of my list. A++, 10/10.

I strongly caution anyone considering Clarkston Roofing. Our experience with this company--and its…read moreowner, Tony--was deeply disappointing and frustrating. They failed to complete the job, leaving parts of our home exposed to the weather for two full months. We hired Clarkston Roofing to re-roof our home and install aluminum siding on 10 windows. The salesperson recommended adding five roof vents ("roof cans"), which we agreed to. When the crew completed the roofing, I noticed they hadn't installed the extra vents. Only after I pointed it out did they correct the oversight. That alone raised red flags about their attention to detail. The real trouble started with the aluminum window siding. When I showed Tony how poorly it was done, he admitted it wasn't up to his standard and promised to "get his best siding guy on it." That was on May 12th. It's now July 12th--two months later--and no one has returned to complete the work. Meanwhile, our windows remain exposed. I had to repeatedly call Tony week after week, only to hear excuses like, "He's on a big job, he'll be there next week." Every promise turned out to be empty. The lack of follow-through and professionalism has been appalling. I paid in full the roofing portion, in cash, trusting that they would honor the agreement and deliver the rest of the work on our signed purchase order agreement. I didn't haggle or delay payment, trying to support the crew and show good faith. That was a big mistake--they took the money and never came back. This company does not stand behind its word or its work. I would not recommend Clarkston Roofing to anyone.

The job was a complete interior paint of a 17 year old condominium that was previously occupied by an elderly lady who had a rather strange color sense, and painted the place over the years badly.
