I ordered hjorteboller, my company had lammboller, pasta bolognese, and salmon, and all were reportedly as delicious. Our dessert passion fruit brownie with raspberry sorbet was good enough to merit returning for on its own.

I went with 4 girlfriends on a Thursday. We booked a table which was smart because the restaurant was full when we arrived at 19:00. The interior is cool and trendy and I loved the big windows looking out onto the street. There is free parking (after 17:00) almost next door, but even better if you want to have a glass of wine or two, it's right on the 143 bus line. The service was attentive and nicely paced, not too slow or too rushed. We were one of the last tables to leave and we never felt like they were ready to rush us out the door. But sadly, this is where my positive comments end because while all of the above are important, it's the food that will bring me back and Jeppehuset let me down here. I had the akevittgravede laks (119 nok) as a starter and hjortfilet med rosenkål and tyttebæer (289nok). The hjortfillet was very tough and overcooked and there is really no excuse to serve boiled brussel sprouts in the 21st century. I am sure the tyytebæer sauce was from a jar which was also a great disappointment. I am left with the impression that the owners of Jeppe know they have a great location ("If you build it, they will come"). I just hope they realize they also need great food for me to become a regular customer.

If you find yourself in Oslo and want a dining experience that evokes something uniquely Norwegian,…read moreat least without having to spend an arm, a leg and any other appendage, well, you're in luck. This is an ideal outdoor spot on a balmy evening since it's in the pedestrian plaza right next to the central train station. After spending the day looking at naked statues, appreciating Nobel peace prizes, and walking on the opera house rooftop, Jamie W. and I were tuckered out and didn't want to venture too far from our hotel. We just walked across the street and found a table quite easily here even though it was obviously quite popular with young Oslolites (...is that what they're called?). We were pretty famished since it was a long time since the complimentary breakfast buffet at the hotel. First up were the 79 NOK ($7.90 US) plate of Truffle Fries topped with grated parmesan with a side of truffle mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3CX84vq). Less Norwegian, more TGIFriday's but satisfying nonetheless. More Norwegian was the 149 NOK ($15 US) Norwegian Red Beetroot. It was served with horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3R9zSBb). It was just four bites but tasty and earthy in a different way. We moved on to the entrees from there and split two between us. First was the 219 NOK ($22 US) Chicken Salad where they marinated chicken breast in mustard and grilled it. It topped a bed of mixed greens, buckwheat, tomatoes, and radish, all of it drizzled with tarragon mayonnaise (photo: https://bit.ly/3RyNVQr). The mustard and buckwheat added a Norwegian dimension to an American standard. Then came the heartier 259 NOK ($26 US) Steak Sandwich which appeared to center around a tender grilled flank steak with the same accompaniments as the beetroot - horseradish cream, pickled onions, and Jerusalem artichoke crisps (photo: https://bit.ly/3qagzMf), We saved room for dessert, the 149 NOK ($15 US) White Chocolate Sphere which became a table performance with a tiny pitcher of hot raspberry coulis poured over the white chocolate and raspberry cream (photo: https://bit.ly/3qfPTcM). A bit showy but a nice finish. It made us feel like upscale Norwegians dining al fresco. FOOD - 4 stars...melding of Norwegian and American culinary sensibilities into appetizing dishes AMBIANCE - 4 stars...casual and relaxing, the nice weather was the key advantage that evening SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty attentive considering the crowds TOTAL - 4 stars...a good way to sample Norway through your palate RELATED - Exploring Norway? I was worried that it was a reservations-only kind of place as Jessheim is a small town, but we were greeted and ushered-in in no time. The server seated us with a smile and came with water and provided us with English menus. I usually prefer the local menu (translation is easy with Google!) but we had just arrived at the airport and the English menu looked adequately comprehensive. A bit of a debate, but we ended up with 2 dishes to share between 2 very jet-lagged diners. The Monk Fish was fabulous but small. A small fillet of monk fish was on a bed of an unctuous, umami sauce of something I couldn't adequately identify. May be crab and lobster? Garnished with chunks of zucchini and mushrooms and a small sprinkling of little shrimp. A wedge of juicy lemon and a scoop of rice. I first tried a bite of the fish naked, and it tasted just-caught fresh and perfectly cooked. The source and a little lemon elevated it to perfection. Encountering a new restaurant, I will go for the fish as one of my 'acid tests' and the chef at Mirabel sailed through with flying colors! Even the rice was perfection. Not the way Chinese rice would have been cooked, but the perfect texture to soak in the source and combine as an accompaniment to all the elements of the dish. The second dish we shared was the Bianchi Quattro Formaggii pizza. It looked perfect when it arrived, and I would say was the best pizza I've eaten in the past year (and I've eaten a lot of pizza!) The cheeses were perfectly² blended and a drizzle of honey over the top before serving turned it into perfection. The salty, pungent cheese complemented by the sweet tang of honey. With pizza, the crust matters, and there was barely enough crust left to mop up all the remnants of the monk fish sauce. What a perfect first meal in Norway!!
