Our trip to the Azores was an opportunistic one. Frankly, the Atlantic archipelago wasn't even on our radar until nearly every travel site suddenly crowned it with hidden gem status or hailed it as the next Hawaii. I explored further to see what airlines and hotel chains were equally as enthusiastic about promoting the relatively quick 6-hour trip from New York to Ponta Delgada. For one, Delta (my preferred airline) was doing a summer test run of non-stop flights from JFK to PDL over the summer, and SPG (my preferred hotel group) had just recently opened Azor Hotel from their Design collection right in the city's seafront marina. Thanks to these two huge determining factors, stockpiled miles and points were promptly cashed in, and the Azores was instantly set as our next vacation spot.
Azor Hotel was as immaculate and modern as advertised. I honestly don't know if I've ever stayed any place as new as this. It was as if they just unwrapped the place from its air-sealed plastic the moment before we got there. It still had that new hotel smell, if you will. From its mix of sleek, clean, cosmopolitan architecture and Old World accents, the panoramic rooftop pool and Whalewatching bar that served trendy, social media-worthy cocktails in bags (get the refreshing Samurai), the expansive and delicious À Terra restaurant at the heart of the establishment, all 123 rooms sporting sea views, and the quick walk to downtown Ponta Delgada, I truly can't imagine any hotel in the city being more accommodating or impressive than Azor.
As the Azores promote themselves as being a place for adventure, the hotel was happy to book activities for us from their well-curated list of available Experiences. We contacted them ahead of time and made sure to schedule the E-Bike around Ponta Delgada (definitely a highlight of our trip, a great history lesson about the islands, and the best way to explore the city), and the Thermal Bath Night Tour in Furnas (hot springs located in a volcanic town, ideal for decompressing at the end of our trip). The manager we worked with via email even went so far as to make dinner reservations in town at in-demand restaurants in advance of our stay.
Once we arrived, the staff was just as friendly and hospitable in person, however, they were also overwhelmed at times. Nearly our entire red eye Delta flight migrated en masse (apparently, I wasn't the only loyalist with this novel travel idea) in the early morning to this here hotel. Per their policy, the guests weren't allowed to check in until the afternoon, which meant we were part of a lobby full of semi-tired, semi-disgruntled New Yorkers waiting for a few more hours than ideal. While on one hand, I understand rules are rules, on the other, it might've been wise of the Azor Hotel (clearly, an American hub in town) to better time their room turnover, as most fliers were arriving and leaving in the mornings based on the Delta flight schedules.
Logistical fine-tuning is the norm for any new hotel, and most guests were patient enough to chalk it up to them still working out the kinks on a small island acclimating to an influx of new tourism. As the Azores increase in popularity, the Azor Hotel is sure to stand out at as a signature, top tier accommodation for years to come. Should we someday return to Ponta Delgada, consider our seaview room booked, and a cocktail bag waiting with my name on it. read more
