This was our favorite place to eat breakfast. Located on the bottom floor of La Brexta market, they open at 8:00 am and offer a pre-fixe breakfast in addition to individual pastry items. For $7.70 euro, you get a jamon con tosta which is out of this world! You also get a tortilla de patata (potato omelette), a fresh squeezed orange juice and a coffee. My husband & I came here several times and split the breakfast - I'd eat the jamon con tosta with coffee and he'd have the tortilla with orange juice. I don't know if they liked the fact that we'd split the breakfast, but they allowed us to do it anyway. They also have a prefix tasting menu for lunch, but you have to make reservations in advance. We tried to get in but they were either booked or we weren't available on the days that they had open. The guy who serves the food is nice but doesn't understand much English and may come off as standoff-ish. They have counter seating and it's the perfect place to get a quick and delicious breakfast!

THE PERFECT BREAKFAST. They have a combo for €7,70 (about $8 USD) which includes: -Tortilla de Patata (Potato Omelet) -Tosta con Jamon (Ham Toast) -Zuma Naranja (Orange Juice) -Cafe (Coffee) The potato omelet is my second favorite EVER, after Bar Pinoxto in Barcelona. The tosta con jamon (ham toast) IS THE BEST EVER. The ham is sliced beautifully thin, so you're not chewing for too long. It's melt in your mouth good. The multigrain bread they use is absolutely divine, as it is incredibly soft and flavorful. I'm going to miss this ham toast the most. This will haunt me in my dreams when I go home, for sure. The orange juice is delicious. It seems that Spain never serves OJ from a carton. It's fresh squeezed from a machine, so it's ALWAYS fresh from the actual orange. I don't drink coffee, but my fiancé does. He loved their coffee. MUY BUENO!

    Pintxos for breakfast? Why not.

Cool little spot inside of a big underground market. One guy runs the counter while a lady makes food. It's small so they don't have a ton of counter space for pintxos but they are top quality and have a good variety. Azkena is also one of the best and most affordable breakfast spots in town too. They offer several "omelets," which are more like a quiche, that are very tasty. They make a mean cup of coffee too.

We arrived hungry in Donostia on a Tuesday morning. This was intentional considering it's reputation of a gastronomic capital. Empty stomachs ready, we ventured without any tips into La Mercado Bretxa which housed food vendors and where we ultimately found Bar Azkena. What I did know was the tortilla in Spain is not the same flat maiz taco vessels we're familiar with from Mexico--instead they're lucious scrambled eggs/omelettes cooked perfectly with runny centers. Traditionally filled with patata (potato), we tried the tortilla with cod (bacalao) and tortilla with mackeral. The umami was unreal and taste were surprisingly familiar with eggs my dad would make for me as a kid (folded eggs with anchovy sauce from Vietnam). It was surprising perspective from a unexpected gem. Enjoy the tortilla on some toast with cafe con leche and that should be a solid breakfast. Still hungry? Have some toast with Jamón. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything here. Remember they close earlier so if you're looking for evening pintxos, go elsewhere. All in all, this was a great breakfast and kick-off to our visit to San Sebastián and set our morning and trip off on the right foot.

After a long night of Tapas crawling, we always get up early and go straight to Bar Azkena. They have the perfect breakfast to start the day in San Sabastian. Fresh juice, tortilla and jamon toast.

Great little unassuming place for breakfast. It's in the bottom floor of a shopping mall; Really it's mostly a counter with a few high tables. But wow. They have a variety of Spanish tortillas (the basic with potato, but also codfish with padrons, one with chorizo, etc. The breakfast pre-fixe combination is quite a deal, and gets you a slice of tortilla de patata, Iberian ham on toast, juice and coffee. Gluten-free options, including the bread (bonus!). Came here twice!

We opted for a few pintxos for lunch while we were visiting town. We also had a couple of drinks my husband got whiskey with coke and I asked for a local cocktail since I'm not much of a wine drinker. I was handed a cup of pacharán which was a bit strong but was nice to try something different. The pintxos came out one at a time which was nice we were able to fully enjoy each on their own. The bao was the only one I didn't really like mostly the bun part. It didn't taste like it was cooked all the way and was a bit gummy and there was not a lot of meat filling. Next was the lamb which was really tender and flavorful. The couscous was ok nothing special and not much seasoning to it. Then the beef cheek and mashed potatoes came out which was the star of the pintxos that we had. It was also very tender and the mash was also cooked perfectly. All of this was shared between the two of us and was very filling. The waiter let us know that some of the pinxtos could also be ordered in a full size if we wanted. We enjoyed sampling the pinxtos and would definitely recommend coming here to get a taste of local cuisine.

This tiny, high‑energy bar in the Parte Vieja is famous for doing just a few things -- and doing them with absolute conviction. The lineup is legendary: the txuleta steak, the tomato salad, the Padrón peppers, and of course, the tortilla that sells out instantly. They make only two tortillas a day, and getting your name on the list feels like joining a local rite of passage. Here's the twist: although the tortilla is the most famous item, it actually wasn't our favorite version in the city. It's still fun to chase, still a cool story to tell, but the real stars of the meal were the steak -- charred, juicy, perfectly salted -- and the tomatoes, which taste like they've been engineered for maximum summer. They only make 2 tortillas a day, so you have to stand in line before they open to get a reservation for a slice. Inside, it's tiny, loud, and joyful. The staff runs the place with precision and a wink, and even when it's packed shoulder‑to‑shoulder, it feels like you're exactly where you're supposed to be. Come early, come hungry, and come ready for a meal that feels like a Basque rite of passage -- tortilla hype and all.

The kitchen (long led by chef Pablo Loureiro) leans into market-fresh Basque cooking: seafood and vegetables cooked simply and precisely, often kissed by the grill. Service is warm and polished and a cold glass of Txakolina feels made for this room, or standing just outside at a high top, as we did. Dish-wise, my runaway favorite was the artichoke hearts, charred and buttery, sitting in a golden, silky sauce with little shards of jamón and nutty crumbs. I could have eaten twenty. A seared scallop arrived in a light, foamy sauce, topped with a tangle of crisp seaweed and a few toasted seeds. Sweet, briny, and rich without being heavy. Don't miss the cheese-and-pine-nut tartlets: flaky pastry, caramelized onions, and molten Basque cheese (think Idiazabal vibes) scattered with pine nuts. Everything landed perfectly seasoned and balanced. We paired it all with Txakolina and left plotting a return just for those artichokes. Classic Basque cooking here with a faint French twist that left us wanting more - but of course, it was time to continue eating our way down the street.
