AZ Period was recommended to me by my dentist for evaluation of a tooth that was deteriorating. Upon exam it was discovered additionally that I had an infection behind a lower molar. It was highly recommended that I have that tooth pulled which I followed through with the following day. The removal was expert. I am so regretful that I did not seek a second opinion before proceeding with removal. It turns out that AZ Perio did NOT explain the less invasive and less expensive option of just removing the infection and monitoring the tooth afterwards. I regret being railroaded into an extraction. I regret that I was vulnerable to pushy sales techniques. I will not be following through with an implant and will never return to AZ Perio again. THE BEST! I was referred here by my dentist for removal of a lesion on my gum, right above one of my front teeth. I was very concerned about how invasive this was going to be and how cosmetically it would look, since a chunk of my gum would be missing. Dr. Adashek called me the evening before my appointment (after 5pm!) just to check in with me and see if I had any questions. I've NEVER had a doctor do something like this. Most of the time you can't even get them to stay longer than 2 minutes in the room with you. It's clear he truly cares about his patients and his work. When I came for my appointment everyone was incredibly kind, compassionate and professional. Dr. Adashek spent a ton of time with me explaining the options and his recommendations. I ended up having him do the excision and a gum graft in the same visit. I'm very pleased with the results - my gum looks great! Basically good as new and the recovery was easier than I anticipated. He even texted me a couple days after my surgery to see how the recovery was going and if I needed anything. Dr. Adashek is a true professional and expert in his field. Nice office. The care was so so. I went for one tooth extraction and when I was undergoinging the first extraction, the doctor decided to pull an adjacent tooth as well. I was unprepared and not in a position to ask questions. VERY disappointed with the outcome. Although everyone I spoke with was very friendly. I walked in 3 weeks ago to make an appt with my referral. A copy of the referral and of the insurance was taken. Made the appt for December 5th . The appt was for periodontist evaluation which was clearly on the referral. I was a bit surprised when I arrived that the appt was for orthodontist. What? Tried making the appt for the correct procedure , unable to get a new appt until February. I'm sorry but the mistake is on the company not on myself. Very unethical. When you walk in they want you to sign a paper ok'ing a $300 charge for a CT scan. I refused and they said I couldn't see the doc without signing. I signed but made sure I wouldn't be charged unless the Doctor needed it. I was lead back and sat in the CT scan chair and I said "Wait, did the doctor say I needed this?". The tech said the doctor always wants it, and I replied " I don't want the scan". She left and I guess asked the doctor and finally lead me to the exam room. The tech did an initial exam then the doctor came in and took a look. He designed a treatment plan and then sent in a high pressure Car salesperson finisher. Not knowing any better I said OK and was told I needed to pay in full to make an appointment which I did and forked over $8000. FYI, when I confronted the doctor about the CT scan he finally admitted it was only needed if they were doing an implant which they weren't and they would never had known that until they examined me. Saved the $300. Everyone should argue that!!! I'm guessing they get nearly everyone for that $300. When I got home I felt uneasy about the whole thing and called and canceled my appt. They refused to cancel and said they would have the doctor call me. I had to get angry to get them to cancel the appt then and there. They refused to refund my credit card and said I would get a check in the next few weeks. I finally got the refund but then decided to call my insurance. They billed my insurance for the procedure and were paid $1500 ( my yearly max). I had to call and threaten them, then had to wait another week to get the $1500 refunded to me which I am sure they would have kept and is one of their $$ tactics. I ended up going to 2 different Periodontists to get an opinion because I felt so screwed by AZ Perio. It ends up their care plan was doing unnecessary work at a very high price. I have now have my mouth all fixed for just under $1300. No high pressure sales, no CT scan unless you are getting an implant, they bill your insurance but the check is sent to you not like AZ Perio did. I would put their name here but I am not sure you are allowed to do that. read more

I was referred to AZPerio for an implant--If i could split the review I would. The actual medical care was outstanding. Dr. Adashek is an excellent peridontist and the process went well. It's AZPerio's philosophy about payments and the back office support that is appalling. If I ran my business, the way they ran theirs--I would be out of business--here are the issues: --one of the staff (looking down at me) discussed payment options while I was sitting in the chair. --payment is always the priority--when are we going to get paid more money. --there is no real patient portal --where you can go in and see your treatment plan see your appointments--or actually make a payment against an invoice. --I paid half of the bill after the first procedure--even though they asked for $$ at the time of the evaluation. I made another payment at the time of the follow up visit. They then sent me a bill for the remainder--even though I have an additional follow up appointment scheduled. So they have all the $$ even though I don't have all the service. --Other than the direct patient care--the approach to their treatment of patients leaves a great deal to be desired. I recommend anytime that they have a conversation related to payment/follow up-either sit up in the chair or ask to go to a consult room--as their preference is to talk down to you--they stood over me to discuss the $$$. --I was foolish not to ask more questions--when I was quoted the amount--I assumed that the"implant" included the crown--that is not true--but neither AZ Perio nor my dentist made that clear--(you go back to your dentist for the crown)--I still would have it done--but I would have planned the payment differently. --Be your own best advocate--and have the treatment/procedures done on your terms--set the ground rules for how you want interactions to go--so they are clear--that you want to be respected and actually treated like the important patient you are. read more

I think the staff here is very medically competent but i wound up in the middle of a tug of war between Open Wide and AZ perio. I was planning on a cleaning today from OWs Excellent hygenist Jason and I get a phone call from AZperio telling me not to go, that it would hurt my treatment.... Evidently my phone calls from last week never got relayed. Then I get a phone call from OW to tell me it had been "all worked out" and insisted that I come in at 2. (It hadn't) Eventually I found out that Dr Durisek and Dr Donovan never conferred on my treatment plan, and the plans conflicted. Donovan wanted almost $17,000 and Durisek wanted almost $4,000 just to start the plans with more work down the road... During my visit, AZPerio insisted that they take new x-rays as the ones taken by Dr Durisek's office were "too old" (taken 4 days prior). Can you say greedy $$$$$ I felt like a bag of money that they were both trying to get first. I'm now consulting with another dentist who will hopefully be more reasonable. read more

The periodontist I had been going to for approximately 10 years retired and sold his practice to AZ Perio, so naturally, I went there as recommended. I went for my six-month cleaning. I go to a regular dentist twice yearly and to a periodontist twice yearly for cleanings. The hygienist started my exam and was highly aggressive, stabbing me with the instruments and jerking my head and jaw around, and it was painful. I have had over 100 of these exams over my lifetime and have never experienced this before. I was in disbelief at how awful this was going, and several times, I raised my hands in front of my mouth and face to stop. As I was going through this, I heard and saw how "dire" her assessment and prognosis was. It finally clicked, and I figured it out. I was there as a "sales" appointment. I was a target of some scheme to make my prognosis as terrible as possible so that it would cost me thousands of dollars to "fix" my oral health. The good news and saving grace for me was that I had just had an exam and cleaning three months prior, and my oral health was very good. I knew that my oral health couldn't deteriorate to this level in 3 months. I will never return to AZ Perio again and would NOT recommend this practice. On one last note, my 85-year-old mom had also gone there for the first time about one month before my visit, and she absolutely hated her experience. She said she would not return, either. read more

Arrived and suddenly I have significant periodontal disease and need a $7000 laser treatment and they recommend stop seeing my regular dentist and just see them. I was recommended by my dentist, but am very disappointed in my experience. It's too soon to talk about the results, but the experience was definitely lacking. I assumed they would be the experts and would be more informative--do not assume. 1. I would recommend asking for all post op care/follow up planning BEFORE the day of your procedure. ASK QUESTIONS--LOTS OF QUESTIONS! Don't assume they will adequately prepare you. That is a huge deal. When I asked about it, They said they give thorough instructions and said having my 18 year old drive me was why I had questions. It seems appropriate for the patient to potentially have questions. Even when I took my teenage sons for wisdom teeth extraction, the maxillofacial surgeon's office went over all the post op at the consult so my minor children--the patient could ask questions. 2. Another tip: Make sure they only work on the Left OR Right Side at one time. Im so disappointed they didn't suggest doing my treatment over 2 visits. Instead they recommended doing it all at once. Then post op instructions that were not given until after I had been sedated say not to chew ANY FOOD on the treated side until my follow up appointment more than 30 days out. ....uhh.."the treated side" they did work on both sides of my bottom teeth. When I called to ask they named the 5 teeth they worked on. I guess I'm weird and don't choose exactly which TOOTH I chew with--I can only control the side. The assistant on the phone agreed that would be "tricky" and it probably would have been better have done my work in two sessions. Now I'm stuck drinking smoothies for 5-8 weeks. read more

After sitting for 45 minutes in the chair, Dr. Dononvan came in for less than 3 minutes to quickly go over what I already knew and did not have time for questions. Then they rushed me to the financial person who told me what the bill would be. I felt like I was in the finance office of a car dealer. I am not questioning their medical decisions or abilities. *I went to the Paradise Valley location, but I do believe doctor Dirk Donovan works also at the Central location. You know that when you have a gum graphing surgery just hours ago and are pleased enough to write a review on YELP, that your doctor did a super job. My options were to be knocked out ($500 upgrade to an anesthesiologist--and it scares me being knocked out!) or to take a prescription drug called Halcion that cost me about $4. It made me feel tired and like I had about 2 glasses of wine. They numbed me well and I felt none of it. I was aware of what was happening, but I didn't care because of the music and the drug I was on. I also recommend bringing in your earbuds for some musical distraction. The assistants were wonderful and I regularly heard Dr. D. telling me small updates that were all positive. I'm in recovery and couldn't be more pleased by their attentiveness and plan for my mouth! I'd highly recommend Dr. Dirk Donovan and his team at AZPerio. Wasn't cheap, but there are some things worth spending money on! read more

However, the hygienist, Fernanda, decided to torture me with a full evaluation by probing my teeth and gums until I was in tears, shaking, and finally had to say "no." I was contacted the morning of the next day. What a relief. The receptionist said she will call me back with a time that same afternoon. We went to the Pinnacle Peak office at 3:20pm to meet with Dr.Wilson. Being a cancer patient and during these uncertain times I was worried about having a dental procedure done. I was very pleased to see the receptionist wearing a mask. Dr. Wilson and his assistant Neka were wonderful. I had a fractured root with a bad infection. Dr.Wilson explained everything to me and Neka followed through with my after care. They were both caring and professional. We also had a few laughs. Great experience. Sales before customer care! I was referred by my primary dentist for scaling and a periodonics assessment at the Phoenix Ahwatukee location. The two hour initial consultation included a $300 CT scan, a heavy handed hygienist, 5 minute discussion with the Dentist and final review with a used car tactics finance/closer for an exit discussion. All were harmonious and felt carefully orchestrated to get the SALE, UPSIZE THE ORDER and SCARE tactics to get commitment to move forward with the Treatment Plan without delay! This included, tooth extraction, treatment of an infection, laser cleaning of entire mouth and installation of one implant at a cost of $13,000! I wasn't even in pain until after the hygienist prodding! I refused the request to sign acceptance to indicate receipt of the treatment plan as this felt more like commitment and acceptance of an agreement to the treatment plan. All representatives were careful to not discuss "fees" and to refer to payment as an "Investment". My review is not about the money though this does feel like gouging! Enough so, that I will seek a second opinion. AZ Perio, we understand you operate a business however, you have to remember that Customer and Patient Care is our priority. You can't fake it! This place is nothing more then a scam First off every patient they see is told they have to pay $300 for an image scan no matter what procedure you are having done. I had X-rays taken of my teeth and the hygienist told me everything I needed to get done from those images. But then she proceeded to take me to have the scan done. I was really confused and ask why am I having this scan done, she said the doctor needed them. I felt more as if I was at car dealerships than the dentist. Second off they won't allow you to schedule an appointment until you pay the full balance just to schedule a date to have any procedure done. This place is just all about getting your money. I absolutely love this office!!! I was seen for a same day emergency procedure by Dr.Donovan and his amazing staff. I called about an abscess on my gums and Karly the office manager arranged for me to be seen! When I walked in ( a little nervous) I was greeted by the front desk ladies with a warm smile and then Betsy the assistant ( freakin fabulous) took me back for an exam. She took my x-rays and had great chairside care. She talked to me about the bump on my gums and answered all my questions. She was very sweet and knowledgeable, she reassured me I was in good hands and that the doc would take great care of me. Then Dr. Donovan came in and did an exam, he explained what was happening and went into details about my options to resolve it. I did the treatment Dirk recommended, he seemed passionate about my best interest ( you know when a doc just takes the extra time to make sure you understand with no pressure) . I decided to do the treatment since I was there and the other assistant Rachel ( freaking amazing ) helped to take great care of me during the procedure. She was gentle and funny. Overall the staff worked so well together, I felt the compassion and care from everyone, in such a short time they made me feel so comfortable, I damn near felt like apart of the team. I will definitely go back if I need more treatment but hopefully I won't . Thankful for their quality care. read more

A huge disappointment - one star is being generous. AZ Perio did not live up to the expertise, professional, and compassionate care ethos they preach on their website at all. I came to them for an extraction, ridge augmentation surgery and two implants. Dr McKnight did not seem engaged and had a habit of always standing behind me in the chair when talking to me which led me to putting it off a few months. When I decided to go ahead with the plan, Dr McKnight failed to disclose the fact that a front ridge augmentation/graft has a higher chance of failing - instead she only talked about one versus two implants in the spot. The day of surgery, she called me the wrong name as was sedating me - which is a concerning thing to hear as you are going under and that was the only interaction I had with her that day. I recieved no post op care discussion and neither did my caregiver post surgery.There was also no follow-up from the practice like they said there would be. When my temporary bridge (covering 5 teeth total including two extracted front teeth) fell out just 4 hours after surgery, McKnight did not answer my call (8:46pm) and did not respond to my voicemail or acknowledge it the next morning when I went in to have the bridge put back in - even though I was given her cell number for emergencies such as this. I was left scared and anxious having my bridge just fall out like that and felt completely disregarded. She honestly seemed annoyed during this visit and did not come back in to check the bridge after it was put back in by the dental assistant. McKnight also told my general dentist that I broke my bridge when it was not broken. When I relayed my concerns to the office manager it was brushed off as a "personality fit" issue. I switched my care to Dr Donnovan who seemed more engaged at first but remained distant during the process and only physically looked at my gums once in three appointments. He disagreed with the treatment plan from McKnight and proposed alternatives wthout properly explaining that the implant was no longer a viable option. He became convinced that another tooth needed to be removed and was completely unsavable. He kept adovcating for a full top denture (even though I am only 30) and it would cost $35K. When I said that was not a financially viable option the office manager suggested that I withdraw the money from my 401K - which is absolutely terrible financial advice and would have cost me far more than theat proce tag and taken YEARS off of my retirement. I went back to my endo who disagreed with their prognosis on the other tooth and was able to save it with a simpler procedure. When I pushed back on the suggested treatment plan they became a bit indignant and pushed me off to my general dentist. It was truly a horrible expereince that left me feeling anxious, a bit scared and stressed for several months during this process. I was contiinually gaslit and my concerns were brushed off. I highly recommend going elsewhere if you are looking for compassionate care and be more than revenue for a doctor. read more

My gums had been receding for years. My dentist finally put his foot down and ordered me to see the periodontist whom he himself saw for his own gums, Steve Reitan at AZ Perio. As influential as my dentist's recommendation was, I still decided to get two opinions, going for a consultation both with Dr. Reitan and with another highly rated periodontist. I opted for Dr. Reitan. Long story short: I am fully satisfied with every aspect of my interaction with AZ Perio. After the surgery, Dr. Reitan phoned me and said that I could call him on his personal cell phone if I had any questions or concerns. How many doctors give their patients that level of accessibility? But most importantly, my gums are still healthy and pink two years after the surgery. I enthusiastically recommend AZ Perio to anyone in need of periodontal care. read more

I have been going to this practice for over 20 years. I had a very bad experience the hygienist working on me seemed to be having a bit of personal issues and was extremely rough on my mouth the day of my cleaning . She actually picked my mouth so hard she ripped out one of my fillings my that was done less than two years ago! When I questioned Dr. Steven Rietan about it he acted like it was no big deal told me that I didn't need to fix it but out of courtesy he would refund me the price of my cleaning? He then sent me a letter and told me to never come back to the practice again!! What a bunch of unprofessional people almost like gradeschool! I have reported them to the dental board and I would not recommend going to these people very poor customer service nasty to say the least and charging somebody $160 for a cleaning I guess one would just expect a little bit more...... read more

Outstanding in every way. I required a tooth extraction and implant as a result of a fractured tooth. Dr. McKnight saw me the day after the fracture occurred. Everyone I encountered at AZPerio was friendly, professional, efficient and courteous. I received exceptional care and Dr. McKnight was wonderful. Everything prior to the procedure was explained thoroughly and my questions were welcomed and also thoroughly answered. While I hope I won't need any future extractions or implants, if I do, I would not consider any other practice than AZ Perio, and Dr. McKnight. Definitely deserving of my five-star rating. read more

Dr Donovan recently performed a surgery for which I was very nervous. He and his staff had great personalities and gentle bedside manners; they helped me feel comfortable throughout the procedure. AZ Perio may do a good job in the periodontist field but their hygienist department is extremely expensive ($160.00 for teeth cleaning). The hygienist, Debbie, admitted that the way she does the teeth cleaning is the same that a hygienist working for dentist would do. As she said "we graduated from the same school" The difference is that they charge almost the double of the price charged by an hygienist working for a dentist!!!! read more

Great experience. The office itself was nice and up to date. All of the receptionists and assistants I met were very professional. Dr. Donovan was very personable. He explained what was going on in a clear and concise manner. I really appreciated his willingness to perform the treatment the same day. As a busy professional, it can be hard to make time. My experience with this practice was so incredible, I feel it is important to share. I had been in pain for a few weeks. After a dentist and endodontist could not determine what the cause was, I eventually made my way to Dr. McKnight who discovered that I had an infection and needed an immediate procedure, which I ended up having the next day. I have pretty significant anxiety around anything dental, so this was difficult for me. The office itself is warm and inviting and the staff here was so incredibly kind, compassionate, and helpful, they made me feel so comfortable and safe every step of the way. They were very thorough and eased my worries about the procedure, process, payments, insurance, etc. (no surprise costs!). I've returned twice for follow ups and each time the staff remembers me by name and welcomes me. I legitimately enjoy the visits! For something that was so scary for me, I couldn't be more thankful for finding this practice and would highly recommend it. I wish all my experiences with doctors were this comforting! read more

Horrible experience! They were very pushy, rude and refused to work with my insurance, even though they are contracted with them. They even went as far as to say "most people who come here don't care about insurance and just want the work done." Well, most people I know do care about insurance first as dental work is not cheap!!! I found them to be the " meat market of perio dentists" and all they seem to care about was the money, certainly not the patient. They may have nice fancy offices, but I don't care about how an office is decorated. I care about the capabilities, skills/knowledge, behavior from everyone sitting at the front desk to the surgeons/nurses. read more
