Istanbul Halal Meats sports a massive range of chopped lamb, goat and beef. The diced stuff is the best and man is it cheap. It can get a bit pushy in there at times so you gotta hold your cool and stand strong against the elderly women and brawny men lining up for their weekly meat treats. When I lived near this place, I'd drop in once a week for some diced goods and I swear, they never even remembered me. But outside the distinct lack of customer service, they have awesome meats and associated condiments. Plus you can always get a pizza from the joint next door while you're there. I walk past almost every day and dream of entering the shop but nay, this is one of those meat shops (I deliberately avoid the word butcher as it insinuates a basic trade skill and equally attainable product) that caters to the emergent middle class family that gives a fuck about their spoilt brat children's well being. And good luck to them I say. There is, however, a lot to be said for the neighbourhood butcher shop that cooks up a wee barbie on Saturday arvos and pumps out bangers for under five bucks a kilo. Gone are those days however. Meat is now a luxury item and as soon as I offload that best seller, I'll be down to Belmore's in a flash to rig up the most fancy-arsed barbecue you've ever seen. That shit gets up my nose and now I won't shop there out of principle. What I want in a sausage is great flavour, without too much gristle, and value for money. These dudes tick two of those boxes, and for my money that just ain't good enough. When did sausages become a luxury item? I'm not sure, but I reckon these folk played a part in it.

And given that these days, we seem to have very little time to do our shopping, it shouldn't be a surprise. However, a few years ago I rediscovered the butcher shop in Kerrie Road, Glen Waverley. I'd been watching a lot of cooking shows and decided that I'd try and cook with meat you don't have to unwrap from a plastic tub. One of the best things I ever did. The quality of the meats on offer is fantastic. The chicken breasts taste like chicken, not cardboard. The steaks are tender and they don't look dry and horrid like you find in supermarkets. The service is excellent. The staff are really friendly, always up for a chat, and if you're stuck for an idea of what to cook, they'll have a suggestion or two.
