Finding American cut brisket in Melbourne is tougher than I thought it would be. After doing a ton of research, I narrowed my list to a few butchers and decided to give Cannings Hawthorn a call. I was put through to the main butcher to describe how many people would be attending my BBQ and the very knowledgeable butcher was able to order a 6kg Cape Grim, organic beef brisket for me for pickup the following week. We cooked this glorious side of beef with a simple 60/40 pepper/salt rub in our kamado low and slow for 14 hours and our friends are still talking about how delicious it was. Two months ago! We've ordered a smaller one for Christmas. They also do free delivery Melbourne wide on a weekly schedule, so that's very handy if you live in a slightly outer suburb.

Istanbul Halal Meats sports a massive range of chopped lamb, goat and beef. The diced stuff is the best and man is it cheap. When I lived near this place, I'd drop in once a week for some diced goods and I swear, they never even remembered me. But outside the distinct lack of customer service, they have awesome meats and associated condiments. Plus you can always get a pizza from the joint next door while you're there. I walk past almost every day and dream of entering the shop but nay, this is one of those meat shops (I deliberately avoid the word butcher as it insinuates a basic trade skill and equally attainable product) that caters to the emergent middle class family that gives a fuck about their spoilt brat children's well being. Minimum order is $80 for free delivery, I noticed that they do meat packs which were very inclusive for a family of two and cost $80 because we don't really eat fish or sausages I passed on this option. Depending on your location also depends on when free delivery is available. You can have it delivered any day of the week if you wish, but outside of your "free" day it is $20. Being an organic butcher it isn't the cheapest meat around but you don't go to an organic butcher for cheap meat. I ended up spending about $87 for chicken, mince, a beautiful rib eye steak, beef bones and sauerkraut from the deli section. They also offer to box your meat with a cooler pack so it can be left at your front door if need be. My delivery was on Saturday, and I got a text about 9am telling me to expect delivery at 11.30, I replied and asked them to leave it at the front door. Later in the morning I got a pxt showing me that the package had been delivered and where it was left. Overall a very exceptional online service! Now to get off the couch and cook it.
