[] Irrigation Review Series [] Part 2 (of 3)…read more Jump to the summary at the bottom if you can't be bothered to read this essay. [] Background [] I had a fence contractor install a fence this past winter, and in the process of doing so, they hit one of the sprinkler water lines. They said that they fixed it, and in a way they did, but they kinda did a crap job of it. I only discovered that the fix didn't take after my sprinkler system was turned back on after the winter, and my lawn turned into a soupy bog (as well as getting hit with a ridiculous water bill in the process). So I needed to find a cost-effective solution to the problem. This is the second of three irrigation companies I dealt with to that end. [] Irrigation Company No. 2 [] After having Sooner Okie Irrigation fail to show up (twice), I decided it was time to move on to another irrigation company. So I went searching on Yelp and came across 405 Irrigation. The lady who spoke to me on the phone was friendly and helpful. She put me in contact with Steve, and who was equally friendly, and somehow even more helpful. I ended up having a long conversation on the phone with him and remembered thinking, "What a nice guy..." But he's more than nice. He's super knowledgeable. He was able to walk me through what he thought the issue was (he turned out to be right), and he also saved me money by preventing me from needlessly repairing a backflow preventer that wasn't broken (that I was told was broken by Sooner Okie). He also saved me from the hassle of trying to install an in-ground backflow preventer. Steve even said he wouldn't do it, because he didn't want to get fined for doing something he knew he shouldn't do (unlike the previous irrigation company that didn't tell me I wasn't allowed to do it, while also trying to overcharge me in the process). Couple of issues though. Well "issues" is maybe not the correct term, but these are the reasons why I ultimately did not use 405 Irrigation to fix the damaged water line: 1. Steve is busy. Like, several weeks out before you can get on his schedule, kind of busy. And good for him, I'm glad that such a knowledgeable and friendly dude has more business than he's able to manage by himself. This isn't a negative for him, but it was a negative for me in that I couldn't let my sprinkler system not be fixed for 4+ weeks, and have my lawn turn to a dried out husk in the process. Oklahoma summer don't curr if my sprinkler system is out, it'd have baked my lawn to the crispiest piece of toast, and I had to go looking for another irrigation company. 2. The main reason I had to knock one [*]: 405 Irrigation is slightly more expensive than other irrigation companies. And it's not because their prices are necessarily higher, but because there's a 2-hour-minimum attached to the work that Steve does. Which again, I get it, businesses gotta business. But I was also furloughed at the time, and whether Steve was a super nice dude or not, I had to make the difficult choice to go with someone cheaper. And I had even dug up the spot that had the leak, so the irrigation company that ended up fixing the leak did so in 55 minutes, and charged me for just that one hour of work. All that to say, a $100 saved is a $100 earned, nomsayin? If time or money is not an issue for you though, I would highly recommend 405 Irrigation. I still wish I could have used 405 Irrigation, because Steve saved me from a catastrophe (of the previous irrigation company's advice), and if I ever have irrigation work that requires more than 2+ hours of work, then 405 Irrigation is absolutely the first irrigation company I would call. [] Summary [] 405 Irrigation has all the competence, knowledge, and friendliness that one could hope for when interacting with a local irrigation company.

I only discovered that the fix didn't take after my sprinkler system was turned back on after the winter, and my lawn turned into a soupy bog (as well as getting hit with a ridiculous water bill in the process). So I needed to find a cost-effective solution to the problem. This is the third of three irrigation companies I dealt with to that end. [] Irrigation Company No. 3 [] After realizing that 405 Irrigation was not going to be able to fix my broken sprinkler line for several weeks, I knew I had to keep searching. So I went on Yelp (again) and came across... some company. I don't remember what they're called now. And I called them to ask them for pricing. The lady who spoke to me on the phone informed me that they don't do irrigation system repairs anymore, but contract the work out to Quality Irrigation. So I contacted Quality Irrigation. And the dude, whose name I forget, so henceforth he shall be called Quality Dude (QD) responded pretty quickly. The pricing was reasonable enough, I guess? $85 for the first hour (which is cheaper than most others I came across), and $125 or something for the second hour (which is much more expensive than most others I came across). But there was no two hour minimum, so I ultimately made the decision to have the QD come fix the broken sprinkler line, because he said that he didn't expect to have to take more than an hour. He got it done in 55 minutes. Granted, he had a friend, and it probably would have taken longer if it wasn't for said friend, but the work being finished in under an hour meant that I had to pay $85 plus parts or whatever. Which, I feel like the parts were a tad on the expensive side, but it ended up being only $109 (total), which was notably cheaper than the other quotes I had gotten, so whatever, I'll take it, QD, I'll take it. QD was friendly. He's young (like, younger than me, which is weird, but weird in that I can't wrap my head around how everyone born on September 11, 2001 is now an "adult"), but he seemed pretty knowledgeable. He showed me what caused the leak and why it happened. And as I previously mentioned, he worked quickly. Also, no leaks anymore. QD checked his work by checking the water meter. I have checked it myself a couple more times since then (and it's been almost two months now) just to make sure that the fix held. And it has. No leak. No ruined lawn. No insanely expensive water bill (as the result of an unintentional event, at least). Quality Dude did a quality job, and he did it for less than everyone else I had asked. And for that, I'm grateful. [] Summary [] Quality Irrigation seems to live up to its name.

We appreciate his personal involvement and willingness to take accountability. While we had challenges during the project, we're encouraged by their commitment to resolving the issues. I'll continue to update this review as we move through the process. -------------------------------------------- We hired Nelson Landscaping to improve our poolside area in Edmond, aiming for something cohesive and functional. While the crews were great, the rest of the experience left us frustrated--and stuck with a space that doesn't work. We were sold on flagstone set in decomposed granite (DCG), but in reality it's totally impractical for a pool patio. The DCG is rough on bare feet and constantly washes into the pool, staining our new concrete. Worst of all, the amount of flagstone was drastically underquoted. When I pointed this out, they came back with filler pieces, which helped visually--but it's still not functional. The area is uncomfortable and not practical for furniture or barefoot traffic, which was the entire point of the project. Communication was poor. We were rarely informed when crews would show up, and a comment from the salesman ("all you women want to see what it's going to look like") when I asked for visuals was unprofessional and frustrating. A concrete crack formed within a month, which is still unaddressed a year later as no one returned my multiple calls. I even reached out to the owner whose email address is listed on the website and still only heard back from our salesman. The crews did great work--but the planning, oversight, and professionalism were severely lacking. If you're hiring Nelson Landscaping for pool area landscaping, flagstone patios, or outdoor design in Edmond, ask a lot of questions and don't rely on them to act like the experts. We learned the hard way.
