It seems Australia has a lot of good Greek places to eat. The food here is great and I tried the…read moreskepasto which is similar to a wrapped gyro but like a sandwich between two pita breads and I think it also had cheese in it. Despite living in Greece for 15 years, I hadn't tried this before it was quite good.. we also had the selection of dips and a salad. The dips have a selection of all the dips they offer and they are all quite nice and they have a lot of pita bread to try them, but it works better if there are 3 of 4 people in your party. Otherwise it might be too much for two. The tzatziki was good but a bit watery compared to a home made one where you drain the cucumbers longer so the tzatziki comes out creamier. Also the kalimera sauce is just mayo with paprika so it's not that special or a Greek dip really. What I would like to point out is that it's sort of self service because you have to get your own water and go inside to order as well which I'm not a fan of and not something I like to see at a sit down restaurant. That's something reserved for fast food restaurants. That's why I think of it as a 4 star place otherwise it would have been 5 stars for me. I would have also like if they had more outdoor seating because outdoor seating is limited and not something you can do outside if you have a party bigger than 4 people. Something to keep in mind.

However, it is the kebabs that I generally come here for, and as I said, the kebabs are awesome. In fact, this place is generally open rather late, which also works pretty well. They do have a sitdown area, though that area is really only open earlier on in the evenings, but the takeaway part is open much later. Yeah, this place is awesome, and highly recommended.

After moving down here Katarina's was the first place I wanted to go so I could get my fill of sarma. Now this is a traditional dish you will either love or hate...depending on your love of cabbage. I took my flatmate with me as she has also experienced the deliciousness that is sarma and we were both extremly happy with our meals. The sarma comes in entree and main sizes and comes with mash potato and a basket of fresh crusty bread so you can soak up the sauce. It tastes as good as when my Baka used to make it for us. We also decided to order the cevapi (skinless sausage) which came with a big serving of cabbage salad (also very delicious), lettuce salad and chips. I was a little confused by the chips but you cant hate potatoes. The restaurant is set out nicely and is clean and spacious. They have a kids room so the adults can have a good time whilst they are busy playing. They have a full bar and the staff were very helpful with all enquiries. There dessert menu has a variety of cakes and PANCAKES! The pancakes are generally like a crepe nice and thin. They have a range of toppings and I will be getting a serve next time I go because after my big meal...I just didnt have any room left to eat them. This place wont be for everyone but if you want a little taste of traditional croatian cuisine then I recommend a meal at Katarina's.

Menu: We got the Mixed Grill (full size), and the chicken soup. The quantity wasn't as huge as I expected. Other reviews talk about a main plate could feed a family of 4. My partner and I easily finished both dishes quite comfortably. The sausages and meats were yummy, but nothing overly complex. This place certainly has its strengths, and its not trying to be anything beyond what it is (which I like in a place) They didn't have the Grah available on the day that we went, but would like to try that at some point.

The meats were unbelievably succulent! I honestly couldn't pick a favourite as they ALL blew me away...and a food baby was born. I've already been back for take away dinner. Rang up and placed my order over the phone, and when I got there, strangely enough the guy knew it was me who placed the phone order. I don't know how??! I didn't tell him my name, nothing. Eerie! But impressive customer service. I see a bright future ahead with Balkh by my side!

Souvlaki in an actual restaurant. Yes, that's right. No longer the post-pub 2am food of shame,…read moreJimmy Grants has made eating souvlaki a legitimate life choice (thanks George Calombaris). I don't really know much about Jimmy Grants but I think this Ormond one is relatively new and I was excited to head there for dinner. You can book online (for this restaurant only) and the space is really interesting - kind of bright and futuristic which isn't really what I'd expect a souvlaki place to look like but that's ok. We were seated at the back and my only complaint was that the table & bench seat made it a little hard to get in and out of, but then maybe I need to stop eating all Melbourne's most delicious foods. The menu is simple - souvlakis, sides/dips, salads, a couple of plated options and desserts. I was excited to eat ALL the things so ordered: Taramasalata - served with a couple of pieces of pita (four would be better for the amount of dip) it was lush, creamy and the perfect flavour. One of my favourite dips in the world (I got hooked on it from trying it at The Press Club bar years ago!) Dim sims - OBVIOUSLY. Why isn't this delicious food available in the UK? It's kind of like a dumpling but bigger, and eaten with lashings of soy. These were pretty damn good but I like the old school ones with thicker pastry. No big deal, I'd get these again. Chiko roll - I know, by this point I was in Aussie-food-nostalgia heaven. Chiko rolls are only on the menu here in November. When they arrived there was actually two in the portion which was exciting, I was giddy enough to think that for $8.50 I was just going to get one. They weren't fat like a normal chiko roll but had the right taste. If you're wondering what a chiko roll actually is, it's an Aussie version of a spring roll and the pastry/skin is quite thick and chewy. Yum. Chicken souva - the main event. I can't remember the last time I had a souvlaki, I suspect it was around 2006 on Smith Street. So as you can imagine, this one was always going to be amazing. I don't know why but it's a George thing to put chips in the souva (I think they do this at Hellenic Republic too) and I really like it - sure, it's weird but it works and who doesn't want extra carbs?! The only thing I didn't love was the mustard aoili so I might get a different souva next time instead. (A souvlaki is a pita bread with a filling of lamb/chicken smothered in some delicious Greek sauce). Service was a little slow and haphazard but we were catching up with friends so it didn't bother me too much. I did want to get dessert but as I said, service was all over the place so we didn't bother. My only other complaint is that the loos are unisex - please Melbourne, stop doing this. It's just not ok. Prices were good - about $70 for two with some wines and all those dishes so I would definitely go back.

We opted to get a whole bunch of stuff to try and share to get the full experience. I started with the Nonna Maria which I the chicken souva with mustard aioli and I can honestly say that if they are all as yummy as this one, I can't wait to try the other ones! The souva was jam packed with chicken AND chips and finished off with that lovely mustard aioli! The one thing I was disappointed with was it was gone before I realised because they are so small BUT at least it was jam packed with flavour! The next thing I tried was the grain salad which had the right amount of crunch and flavour to make it worth the purchase! The chips with feta on top were good but I was expecting a bit more feta on top (based on the photos but we all know that it never ends up like the photos)! The sim sim however was definitely not the best that I've had. I wasn't too fond of the flavours in it and there was a bit of crunch on there that o just didn't expect and really didn't like much in a dim sim! All in all, I can't wait to try more!!

King Shawarma is essentially a middle eastern halal takeaway place that also sells your usual take away fare, such as potato cakes and dim sims, as well as shawarma, middle eastern burgers, and halal charcoal chicken. I was curious to exactly what a shawarma was. I ordered a lamb one, and patiently waited. What I received was like a cross between a kebab and a souvolaki. Slightly more flavour than a kebab. As a big fan of kebabs, I really did enjoy it. If you are in the area and after a cheap reasonably healthy lunch, stop in and give it a go.
