I work in the Lancaster Mall and used to purchase cigars for my husband at T Whittaker's and wine at the Made in Oregon. When both closed, I was excited to see a wine/cigar shop open in the mall. I gave them 2 stars because they do have good stuff there, everything I needed. If not, I wouldn't have given them any. The first time I went in, right after they first opened, I was there for 5 minutes without anyone greeting me. Since I was just there to look around and check out the new store, I left. The man behind the counter was reading a newspaper and ignored me. The second time I waited patiently in front of the counter while the lady talked to someone else, obviously an acquaintance, not a customer, until finally I interrupted them to ask for a specific brand of cigar. She found them for me and rang me up pleasantly enough. That was my best experience there. The last time I shopped, I requested a specific Oregon wine, and the associate vaguely pointed to the wine section and said "the pinots are over there" I looked for about 5 minutes and didn't see it, so I drove to Made in Oregon. Hubs started exploring cigars a few years ago, and recently I joined in the fun. Avva is a nice place to come for a few of the finer things in life: wine and cigars. The walk in humidor had a lot to choose from, and we've found things we love and things we're glad we've tried, but won't bother with a again, as you would expect from any large selection. The service has always been good -- I've gone in with him, or by myself, and always get fast, friendly service whether it be needing to blow out my high end lighter because I mistakenly put crap fuel into it (and yes, I did buy some good stuff while there), or asking for a suggestion of something to try. The staff varies from a man who I assume is the owner (older, a little suave) to some young men to some rougher looking characters, but all have been pleasant and helpful. We've never used the smoking lounge as we have a nice little system worked out at home (either a smoking lounge on the porch, or a system of moving air from my husband's office that minimizes smell in the house), but it looks nice enough if you need that space! read more

By far one of the best cigar shops I've been in. Their humidor is large and very well stocked. Even the pickiest cigar smoker will find something they like. The gentleman working that evening was an avid cigar smoker and very well suited to help you find a particular brand or flavor, and they even have high end lighters and cutters. All in all it was a really great experience top to bottom. Shop has a rustic but polished feel. Will definitely drop in next time I'm in Salem. read more

I stopped into this shop today to see their pipe collection. It was a wonderful experience. I had a great conversation with who I assume is the owner of the shop about their selection and events. I ended up buying a beautiful La Rocca Stella pipe and a few non-aromatic blends. He threw in a sample of another blend and some pipe cleaners as well. The tobaccos were wonderful and the atmosphere perfect. I will definitely be returning for all my tobacco needs, even though it's 40 miles away. read more

Avva Cigars has the biggest and best-stocked humidor between Portland and CA. It is a literal walk-in room, filled with great cigars. Want brand new Tatuaje's? Avva has them. Want classic Padron's? Avva has them! And now the smoking lounge is open, so you can smoke your favorite stick in a comfy leather chair and watch TV. Avva is THE place to go for cigars in the Salem area. The selection is outstanding and the prices are fairly good. They carry a lot of my favorites, including a decent selection of La Flor (esp. Air Bender, Coronado and the Double Ligero line) and Padron (2000-5000 and the anniversary series). I'm not that experimental most of the time, so that's really nice. However, once in a while I do want something new. I like spicy and strong cigars and I've talked to all three employees (including the owners / managers). Two of the three have exceptional recommendation records. (The one whose taste doesn't seem to be anything like mine is the older, white guy with salt and pepper hair and facial hair. I don't know if he recommends what he likes or is just trying to move product, but so far he's 0 for 5). They also have various bargains, like b3g1 on select brands. That's how I found out I like Camancho's 60/6 line, and how I discovered Perdomos aren't my thing. The customer service is great, although I will admit that the silver-black haired guy insists too strongly on his recommendations, which I'm already wary of. (I don't mean to pick on him, because he's nice enough, but that's just my experience.) In any case, I've been to dozens of cigar places around the US and this is definitely one of the best. Got a good Cigar? Good! Light it up and I'll tell you my experience: Last Wednesday it was snowing in Salem. Hey, wait, Matt! Whats the snow got to do with AVVA Cigars and Wine!? Did I not just tell you to light the cigar? Stop asking questions and READ on..anyway, I was on the way to a conference up in Jantzen Beach. I had an "everyday"cigar on me given to me from a Greek Friend. What I wanted - Nay! - NEEDED was a real Cigar. I stopped at the Chevron mini-Mart asking for directions and they sent me down the road toward "Where the liquor store used to be is a pipe store. There they have cigars." I guess in Salem-ese, when one asks a service attendant for a Cigar Shoppe, thats code for "Mis-direct me to the nearest head shop where they sell pipes for 'tobacco use only' and have no idea what a humidor is"! Heres where you take a draw on the freshly lit Cigar, readers. A I enter the door, I immediately know I'm in the wrong place (Spoken: Hookah) and ask the proprieter in my best Cheech voice: "Hey, maa-aan. Do you know where I could get, like, you know, a real Cigar, man?" I'm told that out of deference to the next door business, they don't carry them. "Try next door." So I go next door, and ask about REAL Cigars. The clerk behind the counter shows me the 'selection' of packaged rubbish (think: Swisher Sweet, White Owl, toilet bowl.. in that order!) and I tell her that I am wanting a REAL cigar. The kind that comes from a humidor. I guess in Salem when you say the word "Humidor", its Salem-ese for "I know ez-ackly where joo need to go to git this theeng". And she did. Her directions were spot on and parking was a breeze. I waltzed in the from the parking lot side so as not to be blown away from the food court odor of stale falafel and awful taco. The humidor was right in front of me. It was well stocked, well lit, well humidified with top-of-the-line equipment and lined with REAL spanish cedar. And from top to bottom, left to right and all angles in between was the most thorough selection of cigars anyone could wish for. I was home!! Take another draw from that cigar as a reward for reading on. The owner, Mr. Saadeh Hadeed, introduced himself, and right away I knew he was not only knowledgable of his products, but sincere in his desire to get the customer exactly what they wanted! And boy! Did he ever come through! I'm a fan of peppery, spicy, oily binders and a medium bodied smoke. Mr. Hadeed directed me to a Torano for my conference, and then, suggested I try the Coronado La Flor for when I'm not so rushed and just want some me time! Readers, I tell you this much: If we here in Southern Oregon had a true Tobbaconist like Mr. Hadeed, those "alternate news and Smokes" stores that "also have Cigars" would be a memory. And not a good one either. If you are in the Salem area, I strongly urge you to set aside some time to stop in and talk to Mr. Hadeed. Peruse the walk-in humidor (please take a tray from just outside the door. Your going to need it!) with him and tell him what you want in a great Cigar at a modest price. Not only will you find yourself with a handful of awsome smokes, but you'll also find the prices to be about the best they can be. And believe me when I say you will not be dis-appointed, nor come away empty handed. And you may learn a thing or three about cigars, too. Say, uhm, Mr. Hadeed, Sir? Salem is blessed with the largest, most comprehensive walk-in cigar humidor ever to grace the capital of Oregon. A generous selection of great cigars that is only surpassed by the expertise and warmth of the store's proprietor. Yes, there have been several cigar stores in Salem over the recent past: Treasure Pipe Shop, Salem Vintage Shop, T. Whitaker, etc., but none surpass Avva for selection and quality. Along those lines, the only cigar shops that even came close, were the old Rich Cigar Store in downtown Portland and the Dunhill shop off Union Square in San Francisco. The proprietor and his or her staff make the business buzz, as the late Mr. Rich did. Salem is lucky to have a cigar shop that reminds me of these shops of old. I have smoked pipes for about fifteen years. I bought my first pipe from a small shop that is no longer in business not too far from here. I moved across the country for about fifteen years and just recently moved back. Most of my pipe and tobacco education has come from trial and error or from the internet. After discovering Avva and letting them know what I was looking for in a good pipe smoke I was shown several different tobaccos with an incredible explanation of the origins of each and how it smoked. It was nice to buy from someone closer to my own age and where I didn't feel like an idiot if I asked a question. I learned more in the ten minutes talking to the guy working there (and unfortunately don't remember his name) than I have in the last fifteen years. When I got home and fired up the bowl I had the best smoke I have ever had. This place is small but with the great selection of tobaccos (and seemingly well stocked humidor) I don't see a need to go anywhere else. Who really needs to buy canes or chessboards or other junk at a tobacco shop? This is my new favorite place around Salem. read more

Three different employees, one of whom I assume was the owner (most interesting man in the world look) were all very friendly and helpful picking out my first cigar. They listened to what I had to say about my experienced palate in other areas (cigarettes, wine, and spirits) and helped me pick a good medium bodied cigar (My Father: Flor de las Antillas). EVEN THOUGH they insisted I try something lighter in flavor and strength, they still helped me pick what I thought I wanted...That is real customer service, truly they live by "the customer is always right". I returned a couple days later to meet another gentleman who also helped me pick out another very fine cigar (Oliva V series), which I enjoyed at least as much as the first cigar. I truly believe that if you know what you like, those at this establishment can help you try something new that you'll like.
