She and her staff made our cat as comfortable as possible, and explained what was very likely happening to him. She explained all the options that we could do for our cat, but given his age and history of medical issues (hyperthyroidism amongst others, since we got him as a senior cat), we decided it was time to let him go. She also took the time out to explain everything again when my sister came up from downtown, which is amazing. The clinic itself is extremely clean, and has a very comfortable feel, like a higher end spa. There was no smell of illness like at other places and actually had a lemony/rosemary scent in the air. Their prices were very reasonable, and please note that you do pay an extra fee for the late hours. Although we would all like to do and spend whatever we can for our pets, realistically speaking, we can only do what we can. Although this is a bit more expensive than the regular vet I visit, I will definitely be bringing my other pets here, because they made this difficult time pass much easier with their compassion and professionalism.

Without her, we wouldn't have known and we had been given the wrong direction from the other hospital. We wished we had brought our cat earlier to VRH so that he would be given better care and correct directives. We would highly recommend VRH as the whole team is very patient, helpful and attentive although we waited for 4 hours, but it's worth the waiting. It is an emergency animal hospital, so it is understandable the vet seeing the patients by the triage protocol. By the way, there is plenty of parking at the front.

I've dealt with several of their vets here, most recently Dr. Augustine, and they've all been very helpful and listened to my concerns, and responded professionally and appropriately. I originally switched since they have more reasonable prices for feline dental. Unfortunately for one of my cats, her pre-dental bloodwork led the team to conclude that she likely had cancer. They worked tirelessly to get my cat an appt at the OVC in Guelph where they were able to treat her in the short-term and get the final diagnosis. A note that they stopped accepting new clients in December. This doesn't include new pets for pre-existing clients. The staff here speak English, Cantonese, and I believe Mandarin also.

We took our dog to another vet and didn't tell them where we were going. everything resolved including surgery, 2 night stay and a month of food, for less than 4K. we spent 6k at AEC and all they did was tests. When I raised the issue of blocking the transfer the management refused to consider any wrong doing. this place is owned by Vet strategy who sets their pricing and is impossible to reach. I took my cat to Animal Emergency Clinic of Durham last weekend after noticing he seemed unwell. We waited for 3-4 hours to be seen (even though the waiting area was empty), which was frustrating, but we understood that it was an emergency clinic. When we were finally seen, we were quoted $4900 for two nights of treatment (enemas, stomach pumping with laxatives, and IV fluids) or $3600 for one night with the same treatment. We were told that our cat had a condition called mega colon, and that this treatment would help get things moving. We opted for the one-night stay. The vet did call us during the stay and said that they had taken an xray and things looked like they were improving. When we picked him up, he was in significantly worse condition than when we dropped him off. His rear end was covered in feces and had mucous hanging from his mouth and all down his chest. I believe the clinic should have made some attempt to help clean him up as we had a scheduled pick up time. There was no vet available at pick-up to tell us how our cat was doing. Considering the amount of money we had paid, you would think the vet could take a moment to let us know how the cat was doing. To make matters worse, they sent us home with two medications but no pain medication, even though it was clear that our cat was in extreme pain. They told us to take him to our regular vet for further care the following day At our regular vet, we were given two options: surgery (which was not guaranteed to resolve the problem permanently and it would likely return quickly again) or to put him down. We were told the impacted feces were too large to pass through the pelvis. We had two xrays at the emergency clinic and were never told this. We decided to put him down, as it was clear he was suffering. Our cat was only 11 years old, and it was a heartbreaking decision to make. What really frustrates us about this experience is that the emergency vet did not clearly communicate how critical his condition was. We were made to believe that the one night treatment would help him and that we were giving him a chance. The lack of transparency and care is something we will never forget. I want others to be aware of our experience and consider the level of communication and care they expect when trusting their pets to an emergency clinic. I wish this situation had been handled differently, and I am devastated by the loss of our cat.
