On Thursday, November 14, 2024, Brown's Ivy Film Festival presented an Advance Screening of Wicked from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Avon Cinema. I was so excited to have been able to secure tickets to the advance screening to see Wicked and it was my first time at Avon Cinema. Avon Cinema is a historic movie theatre located on Thayer Street since 1938. The movie theater specializes in the exhibition of films from foreign, independent and documentary films. There is only 1 screen and more/less 460 seats. Staff were very friendly and welcoming us to the cinema. Wicked was an awesome movie and I highly recommend everyone to check it out! Avon Cinema is a beautiful authentic cinema, but the seat I was in was a bit uncomfortable and missing cushion.

This place was wonderful. The staff is friendly and tickets and concession were inline with regular cinemas. Awesome date type place.

Nice little old-school theater. Beautiful architecture and seats inside. Re-watched Parasite here with a friend. Obviously with COVID it may not be safe or wise, but don't miss if you're visiting the area once the pandemic is over. I love places like this. Thanks Avon.

May this marquee never change... though I didn't care for Lady Bird.

I really love this cinema and I hope it stays around forevah and evah. They're one of the few in the state that show independent films. I also love the look of the place and the staff is typically very friendly - and the popcorn's great. The missing star: As much as I love their vintage look, I whole-heartedly agree with many reviews on here that the seats could use a zhuzh. The seats are not comfy, which becomes increasingly more obvious when seeing longer films. I even found myself repositioning more than a few times during "Lady Bird"... and that movie's only 95 minutes. Regardless ... go anyway, support the Avon, and let's keep PVD's access to indies and other hard-to-find films alive and kickin'.

    Old school theater!

I saw While We're Young here tonight. I've been here many times before so I know what to expect and that's why I love it. When you want to go see a great movie old school style, this is the place to go. You do have to sacrifice on leg room, but for me this is great theater. From the retro pre show announcements to the heavy velvet curtain across the stage, this theater ranks high on my list. Plus it's one of only a few theaters in the state that you can see my 3 favorite kinds of movies: indie, documentary and foreign. Never close your doors!

Historic independent one room theater. Saw won't you be my neighbor which was a great showing. The interior and seats were a bit outdated and uncomfortable at times. Besides that I always prefer supporting local businesses

Awesome old theater, nice folks at door, fairly priced tix. Gets independent films that aren't mainstream. Will definitely return.

The auditoriums are tiny, the layout is awkward, and the overall vibe still screams early-2000s multiplex that never fully recovered from the mall-cinema apocalypse. There are no true luxury levels here. No upscale feel. No spacious seating pods. No immersive screens. Just cramped little rooms with recliners stuffed into them like an afterthought. It's the cinematic equivalent of putting leather seats in a 1998 Corolla and calling it a luxury car. The lobby still feels dated, the flow is clunky, and nothing about the experience feels elevated. It's functional -- barely -- but that's the nicest thing I can say. If you're expecting a modern theater experience, this isn't it. It's a patch job, not a transformation, and it shows in every corner of the building. Bottom line: reclining seats alone do not equal an upgrade. This place needed a full teardown and rebuild, not a cosmetic facelift.

As much as I love sitting outdoors on a nice day, I actually really enjoyed watching it at nearby Aurora because they already had chairs set up and there weren't extra noises from cars, headlights, etc to distract from the movie. Even with the potential for additional noise and distraction sitting outside, I really have loved my experiences going to Movies on the Block over the years. Sitting on the ground hurts my back, so I always bring a chair of my own, and for the most part people with chairs are respectful to people will blankets by not sitting in front of them. There's a basic understanding among movie-goers. Over the years there have been some really great movies in the mix, including everything from Psycho to The Breakfast Club and so much more. I love that this free outdoor movie event has been continuing for years, and even with the closing of Tazza which partially hosted it, I'm glad to see it still going strong.

Lobby has been updated in the past few years with lots of food options, a bar area, an arcade area and a private room you can rent for birthday parties and the like. There are a few seating options in the lobby as well. In theater seats are assigned, so buy them in advance on-line to get your preferred seat. There is also a kiosk inside the back door you can use to buy tickets and there are customer service reps to buy them from a person. Both these on-site options also allow you to purchase for a future date/time if the on-line option isn't your comfort zone. Cinemas are located off long hallways left and right off the lobby with a large men's and ladies' room off each hallway. Although not remodeled, the restroom does look like it's had some aesthetic updates. Cinemas are wheelchair accessible with ramps on the lower level. Seats recline and have small tables for snacks you purchased and cup holders. Each level is high enough above the one in front that no one's head is in your way. The audio is *loud*. I wear ear plugs and it's still plenty loud. Some theaters offer 3D movies or advanced sound experiences. All movies now offer Closed captioning and descriptive services. See customer service for info on those. Movie tickets are pretty pricey, and it's nice that this cinema is updated to make the experience comfortable with big reclining seats and enjoyable with cinematic surround sound. Lots of base. Theaters, lobby and restrooms are kept clean. Snow was cleared from the lot and sidewalks and they were sanded. Still, it beats the other IMAX theaters because of the comfortable seating and the buttkickers (rumbling vibrations). I met a friend there to see Godzilla v. Kong -- he had never been to a Jordan's IMAX and was surprised the seats didn't recline, but that didn't bother either of us. I was surprised that it wasn't packed for the first weekend of release but maybe it was the day before Easter, maybe it isn't as popular as I thought it would be (the movie) or maybe Natick doesn't get as much play, hard to say in one visit. But it worked to our advantage! I got in line about 30 minutes before the movie was due to start and they didn't let us in much before that. You enter from the back of the theater, which makes things much easier (in Reading you enter from the front/bottom and have to race up steps to get your seat of choice if it's packed). Otherwise, the experience was just as enjoyable. I think Reading is still my go-to, but I wouldn't hesitate to go to Natick if Reading wasn't available. It's nice to have options. We are very lucky to live in the Boston area. Oh, and I know some are put off by the lack of reserved seating, but you figure it out, just get there early if you're worried about getting the seat you want. And yes, one does have to walk through the store but several delightfully friendly sales people were happy to point me in the right direction and I didn't get too far before there was signage, so not to worry. This room is too small, and the screen is too large. There are only a handful of good seats. All others are too close to the screen. You'll get a stiff neck struggling to see the full picture, and rapid movement and extreme closeups will give you a headache. The special effects sound was also much too loud. And to the Jordan's staff, it's embarrassing that you sell such luxurious furniture in your store, while your chairs in the theater are so cramped in and uncomfortable. I so looked forward to seeing a great movie there, and when Oppenheimer arrived, I knew that was it. Instead, I left very, very disappointed. See their movies at other theaters.
