The lakeside walk goes right around the lake and is a medium to long walk. Generally Clumber can be as busy or as quiet as you like it because of its huge area. Away from the main areas, you can walk for miles without passing anyone else. A great day out, although fairly expensive if not a national trust member. There are numerous entrances to the park from the A614 and A57 and the main car park is well signposted.

The Speedwell Cavern trip involves taking 105 slippery steps (definitely no disabled access here)…read moredown to a bizarre underground waterway, getting on a rickety boat which then takes you down a flooded old lead mine, into an impressive natural cavern, while your guide tells you a little about the history of the mine. The round trip takes about 40 minutes. If you have ever had claustrophobia, don't go- it's a very tight tunnel, you need to take care not to bang your head and there's no easy way out. The guide we had was very friendly, and threw in a few jokes (although he acknowledged they were awful). He didn't bombard you with facts during the tour but you could ask him questions and he knew what he was talking about. The cavern itself is a wonder of nature. It's not actually all that wide, but it is exceptionally tall. It's all reasonably lit- it's not as 'showy' as the National Show Caves of Wales, if you've ever been there (we don't make a habit of visiting caves particularly, honest). A worthwhile trip.

The name Rollestone is a throwback of the name Rawlinstone, which was the surname of the farmer that used to own nearby Herdings Farm, and it is believed that the nearby Herdings Wood and today's Rollestone Wood use to be linked together as one huge woodland area many centries ago. Rollestone Wood was around 200 250 years ago a Working Wood, this means a wood that was coppiced for charcoal burning. Even today, in many parts of the wood you can still see the hollow pits were the charcoal burners used to burn the timbers util they produced charcoal that was used to line furnaces in Sheffield. The wood today is a mixture of broadleaved decidious trees and non-decidious fur trees (hardwood and softwood). There's not as many grey squirrels living in the wood now as there was twenty years ago, but foxes are plentiful, especially in late winter when it's their mating season, hedgehogs too can be seen quite often on warm summer evenings. Although not a Parkland as some folks know parks, Rollestone Wood is a Woodland Nature Park set aside for people to enjoy in different kinds of ways.

But you go to Clumber for the lake and beautifully landscaped gardens. Unless you like cricket, in which case there's the C.C.C., or cycling, because you can hire a bike and cycle around the extensive grounds, or caravanning, because there's a Caravan Club site! It is about a 15min walk from town centre to caves, there is also a car park about 5mins from caves. There is a short but steep walk to the entrance. It was £8.50 entrance which is cheapest cave as far as I know. The cave tour took about 40mins. It is gorgeous in the cave. Lots of stalactites and stalagmites, with the blue john stone in show as well. There are some steep steps in the cave which people with walking difficulties might struggle with. The tour guide was knowledgable and engaging. I actually think that I would have preferred to visit the Original Blue John cave as the caves seem bigger with more to see.

Their souvenir shop is also, in my opinion, the best - they have adorable rock figurines for a very reasonable price, and my kids have loved the items I picked up for them. I ordered a ring and pendent from them, and they were exactly as pictured, and came to the States much faster than I could have expected (normally everything I order from UK takes a month, but they arrived in a week and half). Seriously, they do a great job.
