On my recent trip to New York I flew in to Slip MacArthur Airport and rented a car via Avis. I have to say the rental car terminal is very close and very convenient to the terminal. I picked up the car with zero hassles and was in and out very quickly. When I was dropping off the car it was a little bit harder. In the past when I have rented cars there is a drop off area and it was easy peezy. With Avis i had to park the car and then go into the rental pavilion to drop off the keys. On another note there was no one that checked the car immediatly to make sure there was no issues. I did not like that part at all as I do not want them getting back to me in a month if they all of a sudden found something. Overall the experience was good an I would rent from Avis again. The staff where nice and friendly. read more

Horrible, dishonest company. Had to return early, they said I would be refunded for unused days and I was not. This was after the first car they gave me had major issues, I spent 2 hours of time during my vacation to exchange it, second car was a lower spec and very dirty., When I went to cancel future reservations I was informed that there is a $50 per reservation charge for cancellations. Read the fine print, because what you are told at the counter is not accurate. Horrible company. Used them for years and they used to be great, not sure what is going on but you should stay far away from them. read more

Avoid this location. I booked a Standard Elite SUV through Priceline for Sept 1 to 7. The Priceline receipt shows a total cost of $469.15 (photo attached). At the counter, the agent offered me a Suburban for $50 more per day, and I took it. After one day my mother couldn't climb into it, so I filled the tank and swapped it for a smaller car the next day. My bill should have been $519.15. Avis charged me $1,586.65. That's more than three times my booking, and $647.93 more than Avis's own e-receipt. I went back to the counter and asked for a refund. They told me it would be credited to my account in five business days. It never was. One employee told me, "Corporate Avis doesn't care what we do here, and they will not help you." When I disputed the charge with my card company, Avis sent them a receipt for the full $1,586.65 as if nothing was wrong. They took advantage of a bad situation, then broke their own promise to fix it. I will never rent from this location again. If you have to rent here, turn down the upgrade, get every price in writing, and check your card statement the day you return the car. read more

The staff at the front desk were unhelpful. They overbooked supposedly and they wouldn't allow my family to rent the car without a credit card when the website says they accept debit and credit cards. As a result I had to miss my trip to VA to see my extremely sick uncle and I had to cancel my hotel and the hotel charged me for the stay. Wish I could give this place 0 stars. Staff is not friendly at all and gives you a not my problem attitude. Rented a car that was a disaster of a mess inside. And when bringing this up they just shrugged and said call customer service. Call customer service and they say they are international and I need to go speak to the rental place. Got the whole run around. Also while waiting heard the car rental staff next desk over speaking with an Avis staff just dogging a customer after they left. The customer was saying how the car engine isn't running right and wanted a different car but they would not give him one. After the customer left the guys are complaining how it's not their problem because they didn't rent from there. Starting saying really rude unprofessional remarks. Avis has become a sleazy, shady company. Made a reservation for a rental car in my name with my credit card for a trip my wife was taking to visit a seriously ill relative. Within 1 hour, I realized that I could not do this - that my wife had to make the booking & use her credit card because she would be parking up the car so I was not able to pay for her. I called back within that hour, canceled the reservation in my name & booked a new reservation under her name & credit card. They had already charged my credit card the full amount - more than $500 - & told me it would take 3-5 business days to receive the credit. I was annoyed with this but they said "its their policy". Its been 12 business days & still no credit. When I call, all I get are apologies from some low level, overseas call center person who is able to do nothing to really help me. In short, Avis is quick to charge one's credit card, but moves at a glacial speed to return money owed to a customer. I was here 3 years ago , I should have learned. there is only 3 people in front of me. I've been here an hour and half and line hasn't moved. I've been here almost as long as my flight. Brand new building with zero staff. There are people who checked in already and still waiting for there car to be " cleaned". If I knew this would happen again I would have flown into JFK. My review is about the Avis car rental company, not one specific location. I have spent 2 months dealing with this company and I cannot believe what HORRIBLE human beings they are. I would actually give them zero stars if I was able to. I rented a 7 passenger vehicle back in April for a trip family trip in July and paid close to $800 for this rental. When I arrived at my vacation destination in July, they told me that the car I reserved was not available and a 4 passenger vehicle was the only thing they had. It left half of my group without a ride. They basically told me it's either take the 4 passenger or be without a vehicle for my trip. This led to hundreds of dollars being spent on Ubers, canceling things in the vacation that we have had booked for months. I lost thousands of dollars because of this company and everything I had to cancel. When I returned from my trip, I called them and spoke to customer service. I explained what happened and their response was "we'll give you a discount next time". Told them at this point, I will never rent a car from them again. Basically took this as far as speaking to a supervisor that told me they'll give me a $100 refund. Told them that doesn't make up for the money I lost. Supervisor then repeated "that's all you're getting" over and over to where I couldn't get a word in. Then she said "I'm done with this conversation" and hung up on me. I called back and got another supervisor that apologized and promised me $300 refund. I was mentally drained from all of this and said fine. A month later, I never received my refund so I called again. I am then told that my refund is being processed and hasn't gone through yet. I asked how long would it take and they told me it shouldn't take long. Another month goes by and I call again. That person now tells me that the company found that refunding me $300 was way too much of a compensation and said that they would only give me $200. I found that ridiculous when that was not what I was promised so they connected me to another supervisor and he then told me that since I did not accept the $200 he was now lowering it to $100. I cannot believe that this was a company that is still in business and it is insane to me. How they treat people. Absolutely disgusting. read more

I rented the car on Nov 13th at 7pm at MacArthur long island airport and went to the hotel and in the morning, car would not turn on. Given the car they gave us seemed old and heavy during driving. So called Avis and they asked us to call roadside assistance which is listed on the receipt and we called and the tech came and started the car and mentioned the battery is worn out and the car lights go off automatically on its own so no reason battery should have died like that and we were told the charge will go to the rental company as it was due to the condition of the car and not our negligence. Now I get a bill in mail that I have to pay $94 for roadside assistance to Avis which is ludicrous. We refused to buy the extra protection so the company decided to give us a car that they knew had battery issues and any charge they will tag on to us for any roadside assistance. I am just in awe, how dare they would charge the customer for renting a faulty car. I will never do business with any Avis company or their affiliates. I will be filing dispute with my credit card company. I FEEL CHEATED BY AVIS!!! read more

Contacted customer service and they won't fix the error. Now I can't file for reimbursement with my insurance company and I'm out $180. read more

On December 30, 2024, at 2:59 PM, I was charged $210.62 for a three-day rental. After this charge, I was informed that I needed to provide a security deposit of $200, which I paid in cash to an older white woman at the counter. I was assured that I would receive this money back on my debit card upon returning the vehicle. Now, as of January 17, 2025, over 13 days later from the day of return I still have not received my deposit. On January 16, 2025, I called Avis/Budget, and I was instructed to visit the location in person. However, upon my arrival, every employee seemed confused and provided minimal assistance with my issue. It was only after I began contacting customer service in front of them that they started to take the matter seriously. They eventually provided me with an invoice receipt and the manager "Matthew Digirolamo's contact information, stating that they would leave a note for him to call me and nobody has reached out. I was scammed for my security deposit , employees are doing fraudulent activity and do not take escalations seriously. I would never rent from this place ever in my life. read more

me and my family rented a car at Islip Airport Avis one person helping you line out the door I booked my car on Expedia. One price was 535 and with insurance went up to 600. Then when we get to the counter at Avis. The girl did not give us the price. She did not give us agreement. She gave us a key and car is in the back number slot when we return the car again the line was out the door and you had to put the key into a basket when we flew home. We got bill. $700 for three days for economy car. Expedia said they can't do anything because we returned the car already and trying to get anybody at Avis is pulling teeth so make sure you get what you're paying for and ask for that agreement, take a good look at it because they like putting hitting charge extra insurance that you don't need especially we got it from Expedia. We didn't need it from Avis woman knew that and she still put insurance on us so just watch out. Be careful. read more

Our flight was late so we called to make sure they would wait. We never got to talk to a person but the automated message said as long as our flight was attached to the reservation, they would wait. They didn't. The 24hr customer service couldn't even offer an apology. We had to get a Lyft to our hotel. We had an important appointment the following morning and needed to be on the road by 7, but they didn't open until 7. Another Lyft back to the airport. The woman working the counter didn't even have the lights on when we got there. She yawned and told us how tired she was. We mentioned how they didn't wait for us and she confirmed that they will not pay overtime for someone to wait. The vehicle they gave us was not only dirty...it had BLOOD SPLATTER inside. When we got home and called customer service, they did not care, and would not reimburse for over $60 in Lyft rides. We were given a free day on our next reservation. I reserved a car at ISP on 07-25-25, a Friday afternoon. My flight was on time and when I went to the counter I was told it would be about 40 minutes and they would call my name. I got the impression that they were inconvenienced by me being there to pay them money for use of a car. After speaking to the other people in the lobby, I realized there were 8 people ahead of me. After an hour, there were still 5 people ahead of me and after 2 hours 4 people ahead of me. I noted that there were no angry looking people over at National or Enterprise, but they had sold out for the day and had served all their reservations. I finally gave up and got an Uber to the LIRR and made my way to the hotel via train. I made a complaint on the Avis website and they did respond to me that they would pass my comments on the the local manager, though I think local management may be part of the problem. This issue included Budget as well as they are serviced by the same staff. read more

We rented from this location for 13 days. We picked up the car on Saturday and on Sunday we were bringing the car back due to losing significant tire pressure in a back tire. We spent about an hour and half there all to just leave with the same car we arrived with and told to put air in the tire ourselves. We decided to try and go back after Christmas, we arrived on Friday, we spent another hour or so and left with a car that was not cleaned prior to giving it to us! Then when we arrive to return the rental, our car was checked back in 30-minutes late. Apparently, they charge you for an entire hour after 29-minutes. I have had a back and forth with their customer care at this point and they have no flexibility with regards to the charge. Despite the time we spent going to their facility two times after the initial rental. The customer care rep states that no one in this location made any notes about us coming back and forth, therefore they will not waive the extra hour charge. read more

Zero stars really for the entire company. Rented for about 9 days due to 93 and 94 year old in laws being hospitalized. Called to extend twice after my father in law passed away. Asked about long term price since my rental now was over 28 days. After showing zero empathy about a death in my family, was told 'the price is the price'. Mid way back to Phoenix, we found that my mother in law fell and had to rush back to Long Island. Returned to the Avis counter at 9:00 pm and picked up the same car we dropped off at 8:00 that morning. Still filthy with the same 'needs service soon' warning flashing. I called Avis multiple times and wrote to their customer service. Not once any empathy about our situation. In response to long term rental, they kept responding with how to rent 'next time'. They also never gave me membership points (for almost $3k in rental) saying I never 'clicked on the right button'. And yes Avis, there is a difference between 'there' and 'their' so check your responses. What a shame read more

I rented a Toyota Tacoma pick up truck from July 09 2025 through July 12 2025. My flight arrived later than expected due to weather. When I arrived it was now dark. First off, the line to get a car was 15 people long with one counter agent. secondly, the vehicle was absolutely filthy. The entire undercarriage was caked in mud as if someone had gone off road driving through the mud. If you went oner 50 M.P.H. the steering wheel had a horrible shake. I drove to my hotel to park for the night and called Avis to complain. The woman I spoke to was less then caring and advised me I could return the vehicle to the airport, but there was no other replacement vehicle available. When I did return it to fly home, nobody even checked the vehicle. I simply placed the key fob into the wicker basket at the desk as the sign stated and left. I rented at Avis at Islip airport in December 2024. Staff were ambivalent and going through the motions when we picked up. Also, I did not get the car for which I had prepaid, but I was offered a $50 discount off my rental. The biggest problem was with the return -- I filled up at the Shell station outside the airport right before I returned the vehicle. Avis at Islip still tried to charge me almost $80 for the fuel surcharge, after I had already turned in the vehicle. As I attempted to get that rectified through Avis' customer service, I got a second charge on my credit card for the same rental, but under a different rental agreement number. Not sure how that happened. It took four calls and multiple emails to Avis customer service to finally get it rectified more than a week after my trip. I have used the Enterprise/National rental car service at Islip previously and will only use them again from now on. read more

No problems returning a car here in the rain today. Efficient and courteous service even with the bad weather. Dropoff is a parking lot open to the elements though so be aware if you have to lug your baggage to the terminal which is close by. Was charged exactly what I was quoted. Rented a car for 12/10/22. Mid way through the trip a warning appeared on the dashboard that read" maintenance required see dealership " . When I returned the car later on 12/10/22 as I had to cut my trip short the woman Joanna was terrible. I was told it's probably okay and needs service. I explained I was a lone female driving at night in the poconos and back 500+ miles and this was dangerous for me if the car broke down. They could car less. I was asked well how did the car feel driving it and you made it right". Really. Are you kidding me. I will never use this place again. And the woman Joanna was talking with her friend on the phone the entire time and kept her on speaker while checking the car back in. Only to be told by the counter rep that they have no idea what the cars look like? Why not? They then provided a second car that was filthy on the inside with stains all over both front and back seats...went back in again to ask for anything available that was clean. The mgr., said he could do me a favor and give me a brand new car with only 400 miles on it. I told him I did not care, what I was driving as long as it was clean and safe. They did not charge me for this new car, which was also larger, but are now placing fraudulent toll charges on my cc. I have been fighting this for 3 months, and have proof that I was no where near any toll roads, yet this organization insists I was. How dare you Avis. This was my first experience at this Avis site , pleasantly surprised ! Made reservation online , also used a discount coupon which I found via Internet . I always put the LDW insurance at $9 per day at this site , I've learned through experience to have this insurance added to save on the frustrating questions if they find something wrong like scratches , scuff marks etc. I also used the pay now feature online , also saving money ! I had a late arriving flight into Islip McArthur airport so I called to make my reservation to ask if the agent would wait if my flight was delayed. I didn't want to be stranded and I had an hour drive. I was ensured they would wait as my flight was put in the system and so was a note that I would be there by 12:30 AM. I even prepaid my car. I tried calling the site but kept getting diverted to there national line when I called to reconfirm, but was once again told that I was set and they would wait. Well guess what when I arrived the agent had already left leaving me an five other customers, who were told the same thing, stranded. I called the reservation line and was told yes the agent was supposed to wait they saw my note but there was nothing they could do. Thank God the National agent was still there. I had to rent and pay for another car which was over $100 more expensive but had no choice since I was staying an hour away with my 90 year old dad who just had surgery. I called Avis told them that I felt they should reimburse me my additional fee as well as the rental but was told they couldn't. I normally don't post but this was a terrible experience and either the reservation agents or the Islip agent is at fault and to leave that many customers stranded by a international company as big as Avis is disgusting. #Avis #nationalrentalcar read more

They would not honor a reservation price adjustment set up with corporate. She told me to try to call billing at 12 midnight. The woman at the counter was rude and kept calling her supervisor who would not come to the counter. VERY unprofessional to say the least. I had to wait to call corporate billing the next morning. The corporate billing with Avis was fantastic and apologetic, sent me to a location that would. HUGE inconvienece and lost a day of vacation. I learned my lesson and will never use that location again. I will definately use Avis/budget, just not that location. read more
