Due to a car breakdown, my brother and I had to rent a VAN from Avis at the Memphis airport. Uber dropped us at the return vehicle entrance. Our "baggage" included 5 empty Styrofoam ice chests, a small beverage cooler, a wheeled walker, 2 suitcases, 2 carry-on style bags, a doggie car seat, a dog bed, a tote with snacks and a dog. The kiosk was a football field away near the far end of the garage. Trip 1 - Brother walked to kiosk to pick up the van. He was sent to the first floor reservation desk. Avis refused to take a debit card (he didn't have others) and would not take cash. He explained the situation with the amount of luggage & stuff & my health problems and was told they needed my credit card. Trip 2 - Brother walked back (football field distance) - took my credit card, driver's license, and phone (showing reservation) and returned to the downstairs counter. THEN was told I HAD to be there with the card. He returned to guard our possessions. Trip 3 - Using the walker, I went to the kiosk - was sent downstairs, showed license, insurance & gave them credit card. Tried to add brother as additional driver. NOPE - he has to come in person and show license/id. I returned to guard possessions. Trip 4 - Brother walks football field building, rides elevator and goes to counter with license & insurance. NOT HAPPENING ! - They refuse to add him as driver unless I am there in person with him. Rep DID NOT mention this when I was there, and she knew our situation. Brother returns. Trip 5 - Back on the walker, I wheeled myself to the kiosk and waited 15 minutes for the Rep to bring the paperwork up. Finally got the van - Can't drive from rental to return without going OUT of the garage - around the building - back in to vehicle return. Picked up Brother, luggage, stuff, and dog. Trip 6 - Drove through the vehicle return area - back outside and around the building and into the Avis rental area. Drove up as close as possible to the kiosk. Brother, dog & I went to kiosk - waited another 15 minutes for the same Rep and finally got him added as a second driver. It took 4 hours to pick up the Avis van we reserved on line. Representative Lakethia should be given the Employee of the Year award for NOT deviating any way, shape or form from policy - and NOT having the sense to explain each step in its entirity. Absolutely no understanding, compassion or common sense. To add insult to injury - I had to give my cell phone number. Since then, I'm averaging 8-10 SPAM calls a day. I NEVER had a spam call on my cell phone before this. If I could give a NEGATIVE number to this review, I would. All I can say is BEWARE and I will never rent from Avis again. read more

Terrible customer service. I spoke with Arie, provided my name, and she immediately located my reservation and directed me to the correct station. I mentioned that I was interested in the Buick Envista that had just been returned and explained that I was willing to wait for it to be cleaned. Arie told me that someone had already reserved a vehicle in that rental category and stated that it was a "Standard SUV" with seven seats. I immediately knew that information was incorrect, as the Buick Envista is classified as an Intermediate SUV in the rental category, not a Standard SUV. The employee responsible for cleaning the vehicle told me he could prepare the car for me but needed approval from his manager, who was Arie. We both walked back over to her, and I again expressed that I was willing to wait for the vehicle. She immediately told me no and said I could not have the car because it was not in their system. I then asked how the vehicle could not be in the system if it had just been returned. That explanation simply did not make sense. The employee cleaning the vehicle genuinely tried his best to help me, but his hands were tied because he could not get approval from his manager. His willingness to assist was greatly appreciated, despite the lack of support from management. Thankfully, another sales associate stepped out from behind the desk, took the initiative to help, and ultimately accommodated my request. I truly appreciated their professionalism and customer-focused attitude. Had it not been for that employee stepping in, my experience would have been even more disappointing. read more

When returning my rental, a woman was pointing me in the direction of where to park the car. I assume they was in the far right lane so I headed that direction, but she kept on pointing. So I rolled down my window to verify that's where she want me to park at. Basically, she screamed at me to park the car in the far right lane which I was heading towards. My response to her was she needs to watch her attitude and I know how to drive. I will never rent from Avis again. read more

My #1 Car Rental I arrived to pick up my vehicle with 30mins to make it to wake and would like to note a few concerns that amount to customer service and product. I have been a customer here for at least 7yrs and not sure if this location is getting any better. The exterior of the vehicle showed no visible damages and neither did the interior. However, the interior was not verify visible from the dim lit lighting. Although, the picture was very different in the morning light the next day. The vehicle had not been vacuumed, nor did it appear to have been wash externally. The floor mats where dirty along with the cargo area, which I noticed when almost placing jacket there. I found cheese puffs on the back seat as well. The window also had a residue from something that was taped on the passenger window and smeared with dirt. Please see attached pics. read more

Memphis Airport rental location has the worst customer service. Although it opens at 6am, agents including the manager states that the rental company doesn't open until 6:30am and never have cars cleaned from the prior day. This is the second occurrence where I had to book a reservation with another rental company at the airport to travel on a business trip and arrival on schedule. Also, today... here we go again, Arie informed my daughter that she could not get a particular mid size SUV because it wasn't classified as an intermediate SUV due to the fact that it was a 7 passenger (not true) and it was not in their system. Once my daughter mentioned calling customer service, Arie would not provide her name. The another employee washed the car so it could be entered into the system and he reassigned it to my daughter. Arie, as I remember her with locs , normally have great customer service but today she presented otherwise. Customer Service is precious but extremely hard to find good customer service on a consistent basis. Avis, please do better with the Memphis Airport Avis location... it starts with management. read more

My experience at Avis car rental was disappointing. The staff was incredibly rude and unprofessional. Despite having a prepaid rental, an employee expressed displeasure over my previous reservation with a competitor, which was uncalled for. I can rent cars from whoever I want! I was made to wait to the side while others were served first because of it. The employee's unprofessional behavior included flirting with customers and creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. Such conduct is unacceptable in a customer service setting and left a huge negative impression. I'll never make reservations with this Avis. read more

Horrible, horrible, horrible! DO NOT RENT FROM AVIS. Walk if you have to. Arrived at Avis to pick up reserved car. They told us there were no cars available and we would have to wait. We had reserved a SUV. They then told us they had a malibu we could rent instead. As being on a time crunch we said ok. Then they said Oh, that's not available anymore. Continue to wait until another car comes in. We waited. A car came in, but was clearly not cleaned or inspected prior to renting to us. We hopped in the car and departed to our appointment an hour and a half away. Upon parking and exiting vehicle, I realized Avis rented us a death trap. Lucky we didn't get a blowout while driving. Huge hole in tire and scraped rim. Called for a replacement. Avis wanted us to drive an hour and a half back to rental company to switch out cars. Requested we drive back with a damaged tire?!?! They finally agreed to bring a new car to us and swap it out. Waited at hotel until 11pm for the replacement. The replacement car was brought to us. Reeked of marijuana, filthy and dirty! Could not see out of any windows, as they were all covered in dirt and bug guts. The entire car had mud and dirt inside and out. Garbage inside, food crumbs, leftover belongings, women's FINGERNAILS inside door. DISGUSTING. The inside window was covered in some film. Terrible, unsafe visibility and gross, gross, gross condition inside and out. Half tank of gas in the vehicle. Called Avis to say we wanted to return car, instead of doing better the second time, Avis amazed to do even worse! Ended up taking car back to Avis. Would not stand for these conditions and terrible customer service. Spoke to many, many agents for help. Only to come home to full rental charge and an additional $426 charge for tow service!!! NEVER AGAIN WILL I RENT A VEHICLE FROM AVIS! Backstory: 1930 hours, June 28, 2025. Our flight to Savannah (via Atlanta) was diverted to Memphis due to weather. After 24 hours of delays, at 7:00 p.m. we decided to rent a car. After booking with Avis (MEM location) on-line for a 7:30 pick-up, we cancelled our remaining flights and headed for the counter. The young man at the counter said, "We don't do short-term one-way rentals here." I provided the confirmation showing a 7:30 pick-up, and explained our situation (family gathering in Savannah, 36 hours of travel, sleeping on the airport floor, etc.), and that we had cancelled our flights based the Avis' confirmation in my hand. With an 'I don't care' attitude he said "The website is wrong, we don't do this here, there is nothing I can do. You can wait five hours and get your car then." I asked for his supervisor (apparently named John) who would not come downstairs but I could hear his voice over the phone say "no." Pretty steamed at this point (I generally having zero patience for this absolute disregard for a client's needs), I held it together enough to ask him to cancel the car and print a conformation. His reply, again with a who cares attitude, was "We are paperless and don't print anything." While this was happening, my wife walked over to the Enterprise counter and explained our predicament. The representative said, "Yes ma'am, we can do this no problem." We were wheels-up in 15 minutes. During my 40-plus years in business I have found that when things go pear-shaped (they eventually will), this is when you have an opportunity to be a hero or a zero. Their prepay reservations are a deceptive scheme to take the prepay amount and then steal additional money from your credit card after returning the rental car. Unbelievable. I arrived with a premium car reservation. The first car had a bumper about to fall of. Then the Cadillac had a dent on the rear right panel the size of a dinner plate. I have excellent insurance and would not risk it by renting an already damaged car and they blame me. I refused it. They told me that I had 2 choices, a minivan or a Rav4. The Rav 4 drove like a scooter. The next day I returned it and instead of the agent switching me out, she closed my reservation. Finally I received a blazer. I wanted to visit my family, not spend valuable hours with Avis car rental at the airport. The Blazer was filthy. Bugs and been smashed on the inside of the windshield. before giving me the blazer, the agent let me know that most of their cars have dents in them. Why ask for insurance? Doesn't Avis have insurance that can perform the repair and seek compensation from the driver. This was an awful experience. Shame on Avis! read more

This was the worst car rental experience I've ever had. I reserved the car two weeks in advance and prepaid with Apple Pay. When trying to get the rental car, no one working knew how Apple Pay worked and knew where to find the last four digits of the digital card. I had the car rental receipt, confirmation email, license for identification, and original credit card and they didn't understand how to verify the rental and rent me the car. Then they refused to cancel the reservation and rent me the car separate of that transaction. If I could give this place a negative score, I would. read more

Do not rent here! It's a scam. They will prepaid for a 4 day car rental, and they had no car for me. I was stranded. Wasn't my first choice, but Avis was the only car company that would allow a pickup late enough for when my flight got in. I was in line on time, with about 10 other people, when the clerk announced that they were all out of cars for the night. She said she could not issue any refunds, and we had to call the Avis 800 number. I was left stranded, 80 miles from my ultimate destination, and had to scramble to find a last minute hotel, because the one I had reserved was almost 2 hours away and I had no car. When I went downstairs the woman at the gate told me, "I'm not ready for you. I'm going to the bathroom." No hello, excuse me, can you give me a minute. This place has the worst service and I'm switching to enterprise. We're on company rentals and I'm informing our entire crew to do the same. Really poor customer service. The agent lied about the car rental price and later I was charge differently. I was charged a full days rental for returning the car 3 hours after the pickup time. This also was not discussed. Customer service would not allow talking to managers. They said they'd have to put in a request then it'd take 48 hours to talk to a manager. If a negative star review was an option that's what they would get. I never write reviews unless it is to praise a business or person, product or service. I travel for business every other week.. This business trip I started in Memphis & ended in Knoxville. Scheduled meetings. 2, 3 & 4 hour drives in between. Planned. Month or more in advance. Sales teams pulled from the field for my trainings. Being able to pick up a car I reserved and paid for in advance is crucial. This is the first time I have had the pleasure of experiencing this very high level of incompetency and complicity to deceive, inconvenience, disregard, not communicate, or not give a flying ***K about a prepaid rental reservation all the while taking advantage of a desperate person in a desperate situation. I reserved a car a month in advance to pick up at the airport. I arrived at 8:30 pm and they tell me they have NO cars and it will be a 6 hour. I thought the guy was joking. He told me he would call me. So I take an Uber to my hotel which cost $30. 6 hours later I called & they still have NO CARS. I went on Avis.com & I book and prepay for another car at the location down the street from my hotel. I show up there at 7:30 AM and they have NO CARS. I started to panic. The guy at the Madison Avenue location told me to give him a bit and he would see what he could do. He called me 30 minutes later & was able to locate a car for me in Shelby. He transferred my reservation to that location. He was my saving grace. I take another Uber which cost another $30. I was able to pick a car up there. It was a Kia Forte. It was not what I reserved but I didn't care at this point. It was dirty and it smelled like Colonel Sanders had been living in it since birth. I dropped the car off at the Knoxville airport and as my plane is about to take off I get the bill from Avis. They increased the base rate of the car by $60 & add a bunch of extra charges and fees. This Kia Forte cost me $505 for 48 hours. Plus $60 on Uber rides. My original reservation was $388 total for 3 days and it was a SUV. Avis will NEVER get another dollar of my money. I know that the Memphis area has this issue because both of my Uber drivers told me and I asked the front desk staff at my hotel. Why allow a customer to book a reservation and PAY for it when you don't have one damn car?!?! read more

They have zero cars and are not offering any sort of compensation or assistance finding hotels for the people left stranded. Word of advice - just plan on taking an UBER if you choose to rent from AVIS. I flew into Memphis around 2130 local time after traveling most of the day for a job interview. The job interview was the following day in the early afternoon. We got into Memphis about a half hour early so I was feeling good about the trip. Then comes in AVIS. I had no idea I was about to enter into a Seinfeld episode. I get to the counter and give all of the normal details in which the lady proceeds to tell me that "we got no cars." Which I then informed her "that's what the reservation was for." Seeing that I was there for a job interview, I had to call my contact and have him come pick me up from the airport (over an hour drive one way) at ten o'clock at night just so I could get to the hotel! After trying to gain understanding of how this could happen, reservation means no car. The only conclusion I can come up with is AVIS chose not to prioritize my business as a business traveler. Did AVIS help me with any transportation options? Nope. In fact, the supervisor wanted me to come upstairs to visit with him just to discuss the situation! TLDR: don't count on AVIS to have your car waiting. Don't expect them to have a car at all. Just be ready to spend more money and take an UBER. read more

More bad news, there were 10 persons waiting for vehicles ahead of me .Spoke with 1 lady who already been waiting for 2 hours - no checking in with her they've just ignored her. Walked around to other rental companies at MI. Not a single car available for rent. No one could give an explanation as to why this was happening. Checked with another Avis employee and he said don't count on a car until next week. Took Lyft to the hotel and never heard from Avis. Still no rental car going on day 3. Called a variety in agencies and no luck. What's going on with car rentals in Memphis? I would rate - zero of possible due to a wholehearted lack of customer care. They Made My Brother Late for His Own Funeral . Five years ago, my brother passed away. My parents were in their 80s and it was left to me to make arrangements. He was to be cremated and his ashes scattered at the family plot in Mangum Oklahoma. I arranged for his cremation and picked up his ashes.. and arranged a week in advance for rental of a full sized car at the airport Avis location to pick up family members (Who were flying in) to drive them to the graveside and service and paid the quoted price in full. I drive a small pickup and it could only hold two comfortably.. three in a pinch.. and I would be transporting five adults and one small child. I had been renting from this location for over 10 years for my business. With no issues. The day before his funeral, I show up early to pick up the car and then wait for relatives to arrive. Then Avis refuses to provide me the car because I personally did not fly into the airport. They insist that I had to use another Avis location and to top it off add $350 to the bill. Here I am with my brothers ashes in my hands, a valid driver's license, proper insurance, a verified credit card, and a spotless driving record; but they will not provide the car I already paid for. This is the fourth of July weekend.. there are no cars available anywhere else..period. I spend 3 hours being dicked around, even once hung up on, with Avis's Customer Service line.. when they finally allow me to rent a car from a location 13 miles away and Tack on the extra $350 for good measure. But when I get there, they have no cars available.. I have to wait for four additional hours as the car I should have been provided at the airport location is delivered to the location they sent me to. It's eight hours later, and there is no way I can get to my brother's funeral service in time with his ashes. Family members are forced to wait nine hours in the airport for me to get a car. Friends, other family, and the pastor, have to be informed the funeral is delayed for one day as Avis is not providing Me transport to bring my brother's ashes to the funeral. Family members have to book later flights home. All of this because of some new policy they never informed me of. I finally drive thru the night from Memphis to Mangum Oklahoma and we have the funeral. Avis Employees at the airport couldn't have cared less how bad they treated me..the location that eventuallylet me get a car was somewhatsympathetic.. but the Customer Service line couldn'tget enough of feeding me Bullshit about their policies... it was only after I pointed out I was bringing this story to the local News Channel that they remotely changed their tune.. a month later they credited my card the $350 they had overcharged me hoping to shut me up.. fat chance. I will never use them again. My business account with them is canceled forever. I flushed their wizard card they issued me down the toilet after I shit on it. They will receive bad reviews along with the story why on every social media website I can find. read more

Zero stars! As a Preferred Avis member I was able to just walk up to my car, which was great, but it was a POS purple rav4 and the tire wound up having a bubble in it. My husband had to put on the donut since we were in Oxford and we had to drive the rest of the weekend with the donut. The car shook over 50mph. On top of that, my credit card was stolen from this location. Used once at a restaurant I did not go to, and then recently was charged another Avis rental to my card bc it was on file still. I was there end of Sept and this new charge was for Nov 7th. There isn't a record of the rental/charge on my Preferred account, not to mention I haven't been back to Memphis. There is almost always a tap around line in Atlanta. Here in Memphis it's at the preferred center. Despite our loyalty, apparently undeserved, we do not get benefits. So basically I'm waiting for a car with preferred credit on the board by my name. Frustrated. I'm not excited to see the last patron take a seat. Avis please get it together. I honestly would give "0" stars if able to. I returned my vehicle 45min before I needed to let my contract. It was after hours so I dropped it off and left the keys on the dash as the signs say. 3 days later I receive a text saying my vehicle is overdue. I call customer service because there is no direct line to the Avis counter here. Customer service then writes down the information I gave them. Magically I then receive an email receipt of my rental saying it was dropped off, but charged for THREE additional days. I returned my vehicle in the proper location and per the instructions. Now me, the customer, am being asked to prove I returned the vehicle when I say I did in order to get my refund. Still no number to talk to the front desk here. Also the receipt sent to me says I drove 218miles. This is impossible since I drove from Virginia to Memphis - well over 218miles. This is not right and not how to treat customers. read more

One of the benefits of being Preferred Wizard, is that your car is waiting for you, and you look on the customer board to see what spot you're in, and take the car and go. No waiting in line with all the others. This worked perfectly on my recent weekend rental. I was in and out in just a few minutes. Return was easy too.
