Had a reservation for weeks. When we arrived they had no cars. They did not even bother calling us before we came. I'm not clear on what the point of the reservation is. Really inconsiderate when we are packed for a trip and arrive with our baby and told that there was nothing they can do. Awful. Don't rent from here, or any Avis location. Had a car reserved weeks in advance. When I show up to pick up, there are no cars, several upset customers and no customer service reps. When the reps did show up, they refused to answer any questions and told us all to call the nationals customer service line. The reps on that line would only move a reservation, but no one would call any of those locations to actually confirm that cars were on site, eventually costing me hours of time and a costly uber to LaGuardia where I had to rent a car from a different provider. read more

FRAUD ALERT Their rule is that you must return the car with the same level of fuel that you picked the car up with. Fine, so I returned the car at the same level that I picked it up at (5/8). They are running a scam where they will give you the car at less than full (in my case 5/8) but in the system record it at full. They don't give you a printed confirmation of what's in the system, just a written paper carbon copy, intentionally, that you're bound to lose. Then when you return the car, they will charge you with 60 extra dollars for a fuel charge for not returning it at full. I have spent over 10 days trying to fight this charge and haven't gotten my money back even though I have proof. Just go to a better company like Enterprise. Just completed a reservation, where I paid ~$500 to rent a car for 2 days for my daughter's funeral. Horrible and physically intimidating experience. We are in shock.. 1. While taking a video recording of the returned car for my documentary purposes since we weren't given a chance right as we dropped off (see why below), my 66 year old father and I were shouted at, repeatedly verbally abused, physically intimidated, wagged fingers right in our face on multiple occasions, called "stupid asses" and "don't ever rent from us again" and multiple times hurled abuses at. We are in shock.. this is NY and Long Island City.. what's going on Avis? Who are you hiring? I will never forget this traumatic experience. The people working here need to be fired and no matter what resolution I get here, I will never rent from Avis. I paid for peace of mind, I got thugs and threats. 2. No Avis employee is coordinating car return. In a narrow garage shared with building residents, another Avis car is facing us lights on and no one is saying whether they're coming in or out. In the meantime, resident cars are honking from behind and our car is stuck diagonally trying to be returned.. because there's only one super narrow passage for car sending and exit. Entire system is exceptionally wrong. When I told them that someone should help coordinate since I'm not and shouldn't be familiar with their nitty gritty, I was told "it's not our job to coordinate" Then the garage person immediately drove off with the vehicle before we could document anything and just told us to go inside to the agent. 3. I took the car with 390 miles and was told the car is full tank. Upon return, assuming I'd need to fill full to meet the 390, I ended up giving them 590 miles. The desk agent had no clue when and how much money I'd get back. On top I got no receipt or any other information. We are physically shaken and emotionally drained.. who do we turn to now? Please do yourself a favor and protect your family but not renting from this Avis site. Somebody please shut this place down or fire all the workers and hire completely new staff. All the other reviews are absolutely true. We rented a full size sedan (Toyota Camry or similar) and what we received is a full size SUV (literally an 8 seater Ford Explorer). Took forever to get the car. Staff was extremely rude. But the return experience is where it really went wrong. We returned the car a full hour early. The next day, there is a $100 charge for returning the car 2 hours late. When we call, they insist we returned it two hours late and we have to file a claim for them to investigate. This is BS. I have read other reviews that this particular location does this on a regular basis and I believe they are in the business of scamming customers to try and make more money. Never again. STAY AWAY. Terrible!... everything about my experience was Terrible. First the car I reserved wasn't there. There were no cars at all. The guy behind the counter was insanely rude. I had to walk 20 blocks to another Avis. When I returned the car I filled up the tank to make sure I didn't have to pay the fill tank fee and I told the guy when I returned it. I showed him I filled the tank to full. He said sure no problem.... today I check my statement and I was charged $18 (the fill tank fee)... Avis Long Island city is an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE! VERY RUDE customer service and just lazy awful workers. We waited for an hour and a half to get a car. The lady that worked by herself on a busy Saturday Labor Day weekend was snarky and rude. She didn't tell us why it was taking too long for ya to get a car. People had to ask and inquire. She skipped us even though we were in line right in front of her. She then tried to skip us again, she said " I didn't see you there!" We were actually in front of those people. " Well, I didn't see you there" Either way, no apologies. Like I felt I was reprimanded for speaking up. Ridiculous! She was nice to other people especially the one with a cute dog. Of course! She was making comments like " oh staring at me is not going to make you get a car faster!" So unprofessional. You don't say that to a customer!! The guy that "checks" the cars before they give it to you. Didn't bother to really check everything else. We had to point it out to him That there's the bumper is slightly dented and off and one part of it is messed up. He said okay. When we returned it, he pointed out to us that there's a dent. I said yeah but you didn't put it in the paper. I didn't think it was an issue. I actually got and paid for insurance on the car. The lady when we returned it on Sunday, said " I don't have time to explain everything to you, I have other people waiting to get a car" She then proceed to give me an incident report to sign. I said " I won't sign anything if you don't explain what I'm signing" she then said " you can go, We don't need you to sign anything anyways.. This morning we picked up our reserved car, all we wanted was to get the keys and go but the clerk had other ideas. While the bearded middle aged clerk (didn't get his name), was helping the fellow in front of us he wasn't shy about giving himself compliments, I'm the best they have I've worked for them for 20 years... When we got to the front he started his up selling, for an extra $20 you can have this, extra $14.99 this... Dude we're going to a kids funeral we don't care about having a fancy car. Then he says there is 3/4 of a tank, bring it back at 3/4 tank. We finally get the car and bring it back a few hours later with 3/4 of a tank of gas. Before we left I checked the bill, we were 'automatically' charged $15 extra because we didn't go over 75 miles. What are you talking about?! The same clerk from earlier said, there are signs everywhere that tell you this and I told you to bring the gas receipt to prove you bought gas. One, that policy is rediculous, if you return it with the same amount of gas why does it matter how far I drove? All the cars should be rented with a full tank of gas. Second, no you didn't tell us to bring a gas receipt to prove to you that we got gas. We would've asked why, it would have been a conversation. Third, arguing with clients is only going to get you negative reviews and us taking our business elsewhere. This is the first time dealing with this clerk at this location and although he believes himself to be the best we've had better service from other employees. read more

My experience this AM was quite nice. The woman behind the counter was very friendly and accommodating (the rental agreement states her name as Carmen). The man who brought the car was nice and made sure I inspected the car for damage along with him. I was in and out with my car within 10 minutes; although at 7:00 AM it wasn't very crowded. Carmen also made sure to provide me with directions to the closest gas station and also an alternate location to drop off the car should I fail to make it back by closing time (clearly stated). I hope my experience returning the car tomorrow is as seamless. read more

This has long been one of the least satisfactory Avis locations I've ever visited, even before COVID. Most recent experience: I had a reservation for a car on Sunday 2/27 at noon. When I got there, half a dozen people were already waiting in line because there were NO vehicles whatsoever, whether reserved or not. As if that weren't enough, the manager in the office had a bad attitude about it, extremely unprofessional and rude, while telling me that "the best he could do" was for me to go to the 43rd Street location in Manhattan, where they would honor my reservation. As the time of my own reservation was about to elapse & I didn't want to be billed for a no-show, I asked if they could cancel it for me & was told to call customer service. To sum up: my wife & I rent cars several times a year, in NYC and elsewhere, and this joint is consistently the most underperforming & frustrating of all. If you make a reservation to return your car at 10pm, make sure you are there at 9:30 because they close early. I arrived at 10 and was told I could not return my car, even though all the employees were still there, because they had already turned off the computers. Apparently this happens all the time. Very unprofessional and rude service. In my experience, Avis charges slightly higher prices and provides better quality service, but this location really misses the mark. It is not worth it! This is the worst car rental place to go to. I've only used it because it is right across the street from me. The entire process of buying a car is a faster and easier than trying to rent your car from this place. Every time I come, there is a line and only one person working. For some reason it seems to take an act of god to get your information etc, even if you've booked online. This is the last time that I will ever use this rental service again. The initial car they gave us was disgusting and clearly hadn't been cleaned out from the prior renter. When I complained about the mess they gave us an upgraded car for free, which was nice (and the only reason I give this location 2 stars instead of 1). However, once we got on the highway and tried to use the EZ pass for tolls, we found out it wasn't working. So we had to go through one toll without paying, and then had to pull off the highway at the next exit to go hunt down an ATM to withdraw cash for the remaining tolls. Car rental companies in NYC generally leave a lot to be desired, but this Avis is perhaps the worst I've used (and I rent cars a lot for work). read more

I'm not one to write negative reviews, but I feel it's important for others to be aware of the scam that Avis tries to pull on customers. We had reserved a compact car, but when we went to pick it up the agent said they ran out of compact cars. He advised our only option was to pay for an upgrade which is obviously ridiculous. After a lot of back and forth, he said he would not rent us a car unless we paid for an upgrade, and could always call Avis customer service to resolve the issue. We were leaving for a trip and really had no choice at this point. After calling customer service, the agent (Christina) first told us to go to another Avis and switch out to a compact car (also ridiculous). She finally offered us a 25% discount on the total and apologized for the inconvenience. This 25% discount never happened. When I called again to inquire, I spoke with a supervisor who then said they could not give me 25% off and that we actually weren't charged that much for the upgrade. He said since we signed for it, we had to pay for it. I explained that the agent refused to rent a car unless we signed for it and to call customer service to resolve it. Obviously, people that rent cars have somewhere they need to be in a timely manner. He reluctantly agreed to honor my original reservation quote, and never honored the 25% off. Avis is running a scam, and I've already filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They are backing customers up to a wall to get them to pay more for upgrades when they run out of cars (since customers that rent cars have no choice if they need to be somewhere) and then you need to go back and fight just to get the price that was originally quoted on your reservation. read more

Every time we've come here it has been nothing but a problem! If we didn't have to come here, we wouldn't but no other place would do a one day rental today. The personnel that work there are rude and have attitude. It's Labor Day weekend, and because it's Labor Day weekend the place is packed even though with preregistration for a vehicle. They had one person work the computers inside and after waiting an hour just to get a car, we still had to wait for our vehicle to be brought to us. To top it off after waiting an just shy of an hour in line the lady working the register skipped us, servicing someone else. After almost doing it twice, I spoke up and said that we where waiting before both the customers. She then said "she didn't us. Where were we in line?" Instead of calling next or saying next customer she pointed and called out favorites it seemed to served. She was rude, and when a customer suggested she have someone help her, she stated "no, I work fast on my own and end up doing twice the work anyway." That suggest, that no one else is trained or trained properly enough to check out clients. read more

This is the WORSE car rental place ever. We made reservation at 11am and did digital check in and filled in all possible information online. We arrived the rental place around 10:40am and there was a huge line ahead of us. We waited till 11:30am to finally get to the counter place, there was only one person working at counter which was very rude and unfriendly. She asked all information again to key in to the computer and printed out the contract. (What was the point to do digital check in?) They are still using old school printer that took mins to just print one page. We asked what's the reason for delay. She refused to answer and yelled back "what do you want me to do" without apologizing for whole situation. We ended up getting our car around 11:45am and she still put return time should be 11am. The car was pretty dirty as well. Not sure if they even clean or sanitize at all. The customer service was the worse I ever experienced. The way this place is run and the staff I've experienced in the front office and security/check-in guy can be described nothing short of horrendous. Incredibly rude, disrespectful, slimy and lazy sums it up. The whole check-in process is a disaster every time and they treat people like garbage and just sit around when 10 customers are in line and then are incredibly nasty. As others have pointed out, they also will say that your car is not ready yet and then try and upsell you. When you try to call the office, at least on the weekend, 95% of the time the phone is off; and then when it is on, no one picks up. There is also a complete disconnect between the inventory that is on Avis website and what the front office staff tells you - making this place super unreliable. I will never rent a car here again and hope that management will actually look into staff's absolutely awful behavior and make some changes. read more
