I had an advance reservation for 11/23/18 at 2.30 pm at East 43rd Street, NYC. The reason for my reservation was to get to the wedding of a loved one. I live in NYC and thus do not own a car. When I arrived to Avis to pick up my car, no cars were available. I immediately expressed my concern and told the clerks at the front desk (I didn't learn their names) that this was a big problem as I had a wedding to get to in southern NJ and was counting on this car to get there. At this point I must say that although I was concerned and expressed this concern, I was at all times calm and polite. The clerks did not once say the words "sorry" or "apologize." They were further unmoved by my plight and barely even looked up at me. They informed me some customers should be returning their rentals shortly. So I waited with baited breath. Some time passed and it was about to turn 4 o'clock and the wedding was at 6. I remind you that my reservation was for 2.30. They again informed me some customers should be returning their rentals shortly. I asked, "have they called to say they are x number of minutes away? To what degree of certainty do you know that these cars will be returned soon?" The clerks shrugged and repeated that people should be returning their cars soon and did not offer to find any other solutions. At this point, I politely said, "I don't mean to be pushy, but this wedding is important to me and I need to do what I need to do to make sure I get a car. Can you please call other Avis locations in the city and see if they have cars?" The clerks should have done that from the start without being asked, by the way. One of the clerks began making phone calls. I don't know another way to say this, but she was in no rush to help me. She took her time making phone calls and expressed no sense of urgency to help me. It would have made me feel marginally better had she done so. She did not have any luck finding any other Avis cars in the city, though I cannot attest to how hard she was trying. It didn't seem like she was trying that hard but I don't know. Meanwhile, the other clerk saw through the window that her personal car was getting a parking ticket. I live in NYC so I know this can be frustrating. However, that is no excuse to do what she did. She immediately opened the front door and began yelling at the NYPD for ticketing her. Obviously this did not stop her from getting a ticket. So she returned to her seat behind the front desk and began expressing her frustration by (1) screaming at the top of her lungs, and (2) using plenty of expletives, particularly the F-word. I was sitting right there and I was mortified. I could not believe she was doing this in front of a customer. She truly went on and on. Meanwhile, my heart was pounding because the threat of missing this wedding was becoming very real. Finally I open my Zipcar app and, mercifully, there were several Zipcars in the area that were available for the length of time I needed. I politely told the clerks, "I am very sorry but I have to do what I have to do to get to this wedding, and that means taking a Zipcar." I began to grab my coat and bag and move toward exiting the office. "Please cancel my reservation and refund my money," I said, making it clear I literally had to sprint to the Zipcar and that I did not have much time to engage in a lengthy discussion about what it would take to refund my money. At that point I had every reason to expect that the clerks would do whatever it took to refund my money, it was literally the least they could do. Let me tell you, they could not have cared less about what happened to the nearly $200 I paid for my reservation. They didn't even look up. They just off-handedly said, "you need to call customer service and take care of that yourself." I finally got firm (but still polite) and, strongly suspecting they could have refunded my money on the spot, said, "um, that sounds like a lot of work for something that's not my fault." They said something to the effect of, we can't help you, bye. I then left the office and my horrific customer service experience behind and got to my Zipcar, which thankfully got me to the wedding. After this experience, I cannot in good faith say I will ever use Avis again. I reserved and prepaid for a car that was not waiting for me by 4 pm when the reservation started at 2.30. I would have been dejected for a long time if I had missed this wedding. The female clerks made it seem like I was quite literally burdening them by asking them to please do their job and help me. They were unable to even feign politeness or concern. For what it's worth, I called customer service the next day and whoever helped me was very polite and helpful and refunded my money. But, other than that, it was pretty bad. Wish I could give zero stars. read more
