This review is for Avis both domestic and international and NOT specific to East 43rd, but have rented from this location, - airports, and all over the US and Europe. In general, the service is at best, OK. The cars, if in inventory, are high mileage. Avis will try to make money on you anyway they can. I have had 3 serious run-ins with them on damages to a car which was not my fault ( either was already damaged prior to my rental OR after I had rented) and won every dispute after some lengthy correspondence with numerous entities to avoid paying bogus charges. My advice- they are no bargain price-wise and if they are the only game in a small town- OK. If not, use Enterprise or National. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! Typical cases of FRAUD and SCAMMING customers. I actually have 2 horrible experiences with this specific Avis. Rented a car for the late afternoon and employee did a walkthrough. BUT HERE IS WHERE THEY TRICK YOU. They wash the car beforehand so you can't see every small damage. They did it so fast and the employee didn't listen to me at all when I pointed things out. The windshield was cracked but they didn't notate how big it was. I took my own pictures after getting in the car with a timestamp just in case. Well few weeks later they try to charge for a damage that wasn't me. TYPICAL FRAUD/ SCAM. Also it was middle of winter where cracks would never get that big AND if the crack happened there would have been other damage to the car. This is a classic "damage was there but they want someone to pay for it" SCAM. Also previously I had another bad experience where I rented a car for the day and the employee never did a walkthrough. I took my own photos but when I got in the car it reeked like cigarettes. I asked the guy to change my car and he shrugged his shoulders. I was already late so I thought I'd suck it up but man... Extremely complacent with poor customer service and communication. We had a lost item in our rental car and returned within 10 minutes of returning our car. However, the car had already been shuttled to an airport. To my knowledge, this must have bypassed some protocol because the cars are supposed to be emptied and cleaned prior to transfer to another facility, and this was unlikely to happen within the span of only 10 minutes. We then spoke with a manager at this branch and were assured someone would search the vehicle at the airport and follow up the next morning. We never received follow up after a few days; and we had to call back multiple times, but the car had been moved to a different airport by that point. We resorted to attempting to track down the location of the car ourselves via phone calls, but all of Avis's branches and offices are notoriously difficult to get in touch with. The offices at the airports do not have direct phone numbers you can use; and the lost and found department also does not have a direct point of contact! So, with each call we made, we were lazily transferred to another representative unfamiliar with our situation. This was an already very frustrating situation that the staff at this branch exacerbated tremendously with their complacency and lack of attention to detail. We are still trying to find the item. If possible, I would avoid renting from this agency and Avis (as well as any of their partners). read more

We just picked up our car and it's really gross and dirty on the inside and the outside. We even got the more expensive option and it's really not reflecting that. Horrible. The car I was given at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport was not safe to operate. Steering drifted and car hydroplaned several times on slightly wet water at low rates of speed. Ignition switch did not work consistently. I called the airport location to ensure another car would be ready to swap for this one. I was told they would not hold a car for me, notwithstanding the circumstances and that it was a holiday weekend (Veteran's Day). I returned the car the same day as my rental and explained these serious mechanical problems, which the Avis employee at DFW returns appeared to log on his hand held computer, and was promised a full refund. Full charges posted to my credit card. I called to ask that they be refunded and was told that no record of my safety issues was made and I would be given only a 1/2 refund. Also, as my safety issues were not recorded, I am quite sure another hapless customer was immediately given that dangerous car. I am now disputing the charges with my credit card company. I have been a Hertz Gold member for 26 years and only used Avis because Hertz was sold out. I have always avoided Avis because of its bad reputation. Avis exceeded all expectations for dangerous vehicles and non-existent customer service. Will never use again. read more

I was scammed - Avis gave me a car that had expired plates for 6 months, I got a ticket from the police because of that I had to call ERS, call customer serivce, call Avis locations, I was told by Avis to drive illegally to the airport to pick up a new car... I was told my ticket would be paid and I would be refunded the price of the rental for the first day, I was confirmed for my total cost to come out to about $95, then I was charged $577!!! I often rent for this location and never experience an issue. However, there are some employees that give a good business a bad name. For instance, last weekend, I went to pick up my vehicle and with no explanation was upgraded to a 7 passenger SUV. I am only one person but like the feel of driving an intermediate SUV. When I returned to the counter I was very calm and spoke to him in a low tone. "I'm sorry that is not what I paid for and I'm not comfortable driving that." The guy became agitated and responded "I gave you a free upgrade! I don't ike your attitude." and threatened to cancel my vehicle. After 45 mins of this nonsense and getting the vehicle I paid for he starts shouting telling me to don't hit anybody on the road. This man is not only despicable he should never deal with customers again. Complaint against short man with white hair and squeaky voice. The nice security man was very helpful. The following day I notice an $85 charge for gas implying they gave me the vehicle with a full tank. I went back there and the woman adjusted the bill for me. Would give 0 stars if I could. Worst run rental car place I have ever been, and we rent from them often (out of convenience but truly might stop after this latest one- because I'd rather go out of the city than deal with them). They never have cars, let alone the one you reserved. You have to wait for one to get returned and hope it is acceptable. And more than 50% of the time they will try to force you to take an electric vehicle - which for most trips I take is really not helpful. The people that work there are nice enough, but even when they do have cars they work extremely slow. There's no separate line if you don't come in with a reservation, which has always felt wild to me. So someone could get in ahead of you with no reservation, and get a car, while you have to wait for them to find you one or one to be returned. No rhyme or reason. Latest wait time for my car was over 2 hours. So if you want to leave by 8am you need to arrive by 6, like for real. And the kicker is while sitting there I went on the website just to see, and it said I could book any car I want and come and get it within the hour, which was of course not true. So whatever data or computer system they're using is complete joke /lie. Even when you prepay still no car there for you. Do not recommend. I typically do quick rentals for skiing and this is the easiest place to get to while walking over with my skis, but at this point I don't even think it's worth the convenience. Their cars are not cleaned. They never give us the car type we reserved this happened twice but this time they don't even tell until we see the car. Furthermore we found the price was also overcharged for the new car which we didn't reserve. When we asked them to change they said no sedans left, and we just saw our next customer got sedan type. Furthermore they told us to switch the car they had to charge extra, then we found they did even we took the SUV they offer. And due to COVID there's a long line to wait for 1 hour to get the key, they don't even explain they change our reservation. Just told us to this is the contract and sign. Everything is unreasonable. ANTI-SEMITISM! I do not make this accusation lightly, but my experience at this branch leaves me with no other conclusion. I went to rent a car with my friend on a Sunday morning and was greeted by the two personal working there. At first they were friendly and professional. However, the ambiance changed once they saw my Israeli passport. Upon presentation of my passport, they insisted that I PRINT OUT my voucher and present it to them before I get my car. I provided my driver's license, voucher number, my phone with the scan mark. But they insisted bluntly that they need a hard copy of the voucher. When I asked why she simply stated: "policy". They suggested that I go ask any one of the local merchants to use their printer. Reminder, this was a Sunday morning, during Covid, nothing was open. I asked if I could email it to them and they could print it out on-sight. The response was: " We don't have email". By this time, incompetence was no longer a viable conclusion. I asked to speak to the manager and they told me he was out and might be back in an hour. Then ignored me entirely. What could I do? I went to a hotel up the block, begged them to print it out and went back with the voucher. I had my friend hold my place in line and when I returned and joined her they accused me of cutting the line, the line of one, who was my friend! I did not move, I said the only way to get me out is to give me my car. They took the voucher (tossed it aside) and gave me the keys (digitally). We have been operating on the cloud for the majority of this century. Email has been a universally accepted business medium sine the early 90's. You expect me to believe AVIS relays on HARD voucher copies???? Also, no one else was asked to present any vouchers! I do not write this to elicit sympathy from management, but as a warning to my Jewish tribe who know all to well the Omnipresence anti semitism still enjoys; who knows all to well, the shift in ambiance when your Jewish heritage is presented. If i could give a negative star based on our rental experience today I would. Given the fact we are in the middle of a global pandemic and good hygiene and safety is at the utmost forefront of everyone's mind, I would have expected a global company such as Avis to not only be more proactive in ensuring the health of its customers but also live up to its COVID-19 Safety Pledge. We were extremely disappointed to find in the backseat of our rental car, food crumbs that had been left behind by the previous customer, melted chocolate on the seat and a previous customers credit card. When we told the staff onsite this, their response was that they were short staffed and didn't have time to clean the car. A second employee asked us how the lack of cleanliness affected us... I should also mention the gas tank was 3/4 upon pick up. DON'T RENT WITH AVIS!!!!! This is a horrible car rental service!!! The worst on this planet. They just wanted to sell and take my money. When I got the rental AVIS told me I can drop-off to any location. Few days later I get a bill with a huge charge for returning to a different location. Also, I returned the car without filling up the gas which I should've done before returning. They charged me $10 a gallon! After all this, I call customer service and they are very arrogant people. Live on this street and Avis a very inconsiderate neighbor. From 6am on a Monday morning their staff start setting off the alarms of the cars that have been left on the street to find which key matches which car. Imagine someone so inconsiderate that sets off 30+ car alarms for 40 mins on a street with residents and school going children. Staff just too lazy to find the cars and would rather wake the whole neighborhood. Called to raise the issue and the staff initially denied there were any alarms and then were dismissive of the issue. Building has complained to them before but behavior continues. So I made a reservation to rent a car two months in advance. Less than 24 hours after I made the reservation I had to cancel. Avis charged me $50.00 cancellation fee even though the confirmation email they sent me clearly states "If you need to cancel 24 hours prior to the scheduled pick-up time, we will refund the full prepaid amount, less a $ 50.00 USD processing fee." I cancelled two months before scheduled pick up time and they still charged me $50.00. Not to mention they only had small SUV's to rent and the price was $568.00 for two days with minimum insurance coverage and no extras. I find myself crying every time I remember how I went to AVIS as thousands of people were dying of COVID-19 in NYC, and was very disturbed to see that their employees weren't wearing masks or gloves and that the returned cars were sitting with closed windows after having some Lysol sprayed inside, instead of leaving the windows open to air out. When I expressed my dismay, I was told that the staff weren't allowed to wear masks because corporate didn't want customers to be scared by people wearing masks. Needless to say, I was horrified and felt so bad for the poor staff who appeared to be high risk. It made me very sad. Don't know about all these other people complaining here but I have never had a problem at this location. Was here today to pick up a car for a biz trip and received a great vehicle. Staff was courteous and quickly set me up. Pick up and drop off was pretty fast and pain free. Only a few minutes walk from Grand Central Station. Plus, they are open 24 hours for easy drop off no matter where you picked up from. Saved my butt a few times when I got home too late to drop off at my normal Avis close to my street. read more

I rented from this location during COVID, spring 2021. I think their customer service was top notch--the attendant that brought the car around was fantastic, did a thorough walk around. The attendant when we brought the car back was also kind and detailed. The whole process was super quick. We returned a bit early and although it's not customary, they comped the bill by $20.00, which was very kind. I would absolutely rent from here again. The only negative elements were that when we got the car, the interior was a little sticky on the door and the steering wheel. This could have been a specific cleaning product though so it's a toss. The other downside is that sometimes they are not the most competitive rate. The Hertz down the street sometimes can be up to $200.00 cheaper. Truly though, an enjoyable experience. read more

I rented a compact car "Ford Focus or similar" that "can fit five people." When my husband went to pick up the car, they said they had a Beetle for him. As you know, you absolutely CANNOT fit five people in a Bug, nor fit near the same amount of luggage in the trunk as you can in a Ford Focus. I called after and was told there was nothing they could do, and was dealt with in a very robotic fashion. I am very angry that we were not offered a free upgrade - we had to pay for it. Worst car rental experience of my life. Was lied to multiple times by employees, promising things that didn't happen once my car was returned and I received my invoice. Charged over double the total quote and was told it was because "terms and conditions " that aren't listed on their website. On top of this the car they gave me to drive had dents and noticeable scratches on every surface of the car. Would advise against this rental company to anyone. Absolutely horrible experience. The staff was extremely unfriendly from start to finish. Upon dropping off the car, they claimed my gas wasn't filled up properly and I offered to pay the difference. They gouged me on claiming it was way lower than it actually was. Finally, I accidentally left an expensive item in the backseat of the car. Upon realizing my mistake, I called the representative at the front desk. She let me know they would not check the car for my item, that they were far too busy and that the cars were heading out for the airport (20 minutes earlier the lot was completely dead). I asked if they had a lost and found program, to which she repeated herself, called me stupid for not listening, and hung up on me. I made a reservation online for a full size car that was confirmed to be used on Wednesday at 1pm. When i arrived to the rental car place, I knew there was something wrong. There were no cars available. I politely asked the front desk women who responded by saying that no cars were available and they were on their way from Newark Airport and HAD NO IDEA on the estimated time of arrival. She told me to take a seat. I simply asked if the next closest location at 64th street would have any and if she could transfer my reservation up there. She said she didn't know and didn't know how to check. She then repeatedly told me to sit down and wait for the cars to arrive. A few minutes later - two more customers came also with 1pm reservations and also was told the same story. How can you have 3 reservations at the same time have no cars available? To top this off - the front desk lady sat there in the chair on facebook watching a video not doing a single thing about it. IF you at least attempt to locate the ETA of the cars - i can make proper arrangements on my schedule for further down the day to move my plans around or postpone them. AT LEAST - act like you care about it or fake being busy. Simply sitting at the front desk staring at your phone and not even making eye contact with us is very troubling. You have 3 customers who are all corporate individuals using business accounts that all need cars. We all had reservations confirmed by the Avis system. At least act like you care. It seems facebook and watching funny videos is more important than doing your job. Eventually - after 45 minutes of waiting - one car arrived from the East 64th street location but the other two customers were still stranded with no ETA. read more

I rented a car originally for 2 days and returned it within 21 hours and was told i would receive a credit and updated invoice by email. They have now decided that they will not credit me the difference because i dont have a copy of that receipt. Shameful shameful shameful Avis. You've lost a customer for life. Cars that are shown on the website are not actually there and you rent them but they end up giving you a cheaper car, their computer system does not work properly, and because of this they end up overcharging the clients, which the client may not even know about, which I think they do it on purpose, because this is how they make money, terrible company and scammers in general read more

One of the worst avis centers Always a long wait to get to the counter even at the early mornings Attendants are slow and do not speak to you unless its absolutely necessary I never get an upgrade at this location despite my status of traveling and renting cars for years; yes, i have status The cars here are always lower quality than the other locations, ex.: 801 Broadway or UES 64th St most importantly - THERE'S NO GAS STATION HERE So you have to take the rental out of the station with whatever gas level it was previously returned with. This is the second time I dropped off a rental car with full tank of gas and the attendant tried to cheat me on extra charges, putting down in my record that I only had half tank, which comes out to be almost $200. Both times I was alert enough to ask for a printed receipt on the spot, caught them red handed and asked the manager to revoke the charge while I followed him to the car. The manager didn't even try to apologize. Which means for anyone else who trust this business and leaves without a receipt, he/she can easily be scammed out of hundreds of dollars. These guys are running a scam to overcharge you on fuel costs when you return your vehicle. Today, we filled the tank on 23rd and drove it straight to 43rd - that's the closest gas station. The tank still showed as full. They charged us as if we returned it with half a tank ($120). Worse, they didn't tell us they charged us extra - my husband had to ask for a printed copy of the receipt and saw $120 charge. This has happened to my husband and I twice on separate occasions. The manager came out and removed the charge but clearly he is in on the scam. He didn't apologize either. What kind of people try to take advantage of others like that during COVID times? Shameful. We are reporting them to corporate and BBB. read more
