Worst Car Rental Experience ever! Do not use this branch if you like to have a respectful service or be charged correctly - the car in the picture was referred as 'filthy' from 5 steps away by the owner, charged us for cleaning fee - owner of the place tell my husband without paraphrasing 'your wife should behave better' (!) - when we said this cleaning fee was not legal and we do not authorize our card to be charged, he said us that 'yeah go ahead and sue us, sue me' Details: we rented for 10 days from airport branch, and as you see there was dust and only one place had a leafs.

The only thing shiftier than a rental car is this co-branded Avis/Budget franchisee. Arrived at the 7:30 am opening time to pick up the car I reserved online for $70/weekend. The printed contract stated $130. When asked about the discrepancy the owner said 'it's $60 for the extra 30 minutes beyond three days'. Huh? By now it's 7:40 am. Turns out the following Monday is a holiday and they don't open until 8 am. Since I "can't return (the car) until 8 am, it's an extra $60 'late fee'". OK-I'll wait 20 minutes, rent the car today at 8:00 am and thus stay within the three day window. "Too late," he quips, "the transaction is complete and your credit card's been charged!" When I challenged his lack of a signed rental agreement he countered "all I can do now is void your existing reservation and book a new one" -at a substantially higher price. No thanks. As I walked out he magically gained the ability to credit my previously 'unchangeable' 7:30 am "transaction" $60-but only after I returned the car, and (naturally) with nothing confirmed in writing. Righhhht. Read the other Yelp reviews for how these shady undocumented future 'promises' have played out. I can only imagine the return damage inspection. Walked across the street, hopped in a Gig-car, drove where I needed to go and conveniently "returned" it right in front of my own house. No slight-of-contract shenanigans, trumped-up damages or belligerent business owners necessary-and with the fuel included Gig turned out to be cheaper! Hmm. I wonder which business model will prevail.

$50 charge and "extremely dirty" according to ppl there.

Let's say the ending was the guy who runs the place calling me a "bastard" and telling me "to get the fuck out of here". This enough should be to discourage anyone from renting after he tried to charge me $50 for cleaning because he thought car was extremely dirty after we spent 7 days traveling in it. I carefully picked all 20 pet hairs that were on the floor and asked him whether him starting a fight and calling names is worth $50.

The car should be AWD, but it is not.

We asked for a AWD car. We were told that we had to call the on the morning of the rental to secure one, since they could not reserve it by drivetrain in their system. Inconvenient, but not a big problem. I called that morning, and they said they had one available, but I had to hurry to get to the rental place to claim it before anyone else. Okay so I stressed out and got there as soon as I could. And it was still there, great. I made sure to ask them explicitly that it was in fact an AWD car, since we were driving up to lake tahoe and expected snowfall. They assured me it was. After they wasted half an hour of my time in getting my change of car registered in their system, we were off to the mountains with a $15 a day more expensive car. So far so good. Three days later, today: Disaster. We were driving back, and it's snowing, as expected. But as I'm trying to drive up a hill, the front wheels just spin, and we can't get up. I think it's weird that only the front wheels spin, and look around on the car controls to see if there is a button to activate the AWD. Nothing. There is no owners manual in the car, so we call the rental place to ask about it. After being on hold forever, and being transferred twice, the lady informed us that the car we are driving is in fact a 2 wheel drive car, front wheel drive, the worst for the snow. I have experience driving in snowy conditions, and I was driving this car as if it was a AWD. If I knew it was FWD, I would have been much more careful about understeering. This misinformation was legitimately dangerous. After trying to accelerate from the bottom of the hill and get up with momentum, there is just no point, we can't get up. We can't get home. We're stuck. In an intersection by a slippery hill, in a fairly dangerous spot. So we call the rental place again, and tell them our situation. After two hours of calling and being stuck in this intersection, what we got is: "Budget won't let us send you a tow truck, because the car has not mechanically broken down". What!? We are stuck in a dangerous location, there's a snowstorm outside, we can't get home. We were lucky to have plenty of food and water in the car... After more calling and insisting on the fact that we cannot make it home, they finally did send a tow truck. Or at least they said they would. We got stuck at 11:30, and it's 5 pm and help has not arrived yet. They said they cannot promise to waive the towing fee, even though they are at fault for this situation. Between the four different people I had to speak to, they all claim its not their responsibility. I hope I get home today...

I made the reservation so I could pick up the car an hour later, and we timed everything carefully to meet everyone's needs. We arrived at the office at 11:00, which was the pick up time. There was a long line of people so we waited about 15 minutes. There were also people sitting on chairs around the room. When we got to the desk, we were told that they did not have a car for us, so we would need to wait with the other people until one was available. The receptionist said that all the "same day reservations" were made incorrectly or mistakenly, and they didn't have cars available. We asked if there would be a car ready in the next 30 minutes and she said probably not. If I made the reservation online and it was confirmed, this shouldn't have happened! When I was searching at home online, if there was not availability, I would have kept searching. This was most unprofessional and very disappointing and stressful. It also would have been nice if we were told there was no car for us BEFORE we waited in line for 15 minutes. (Last complaint: as we were leaving, we noticed that there were many Enterprise cars in the lot, which was further confounding.) Anyway, big THUMBS DOWN

BEWARE...you problem with Budget originated from Seattle but the policy is the same. I phoned to…read moreadvise that my flight had been delayed and then canceled I would arrive on a late flight. It was around 11:30PM when I got to the rental desk. The attendant was pleasant and stated she could put me in a different vehicle than I chose and save me money. Sounded good. I was given the key fob and location of the vehicle. I was asked if I wanted a copy of the receipt of to have it emailed. I chose email/Once at the vehicle I note several scratches. My friend walked back toward the desk. The representative met him at the door. It was COLD outside. When advised of the minimal damages she stated I should take photos. She did not want to come outside. Took the photos and was on my way. I had no incidents with the car. When I returned the car there was no attendant present. I walked the fob inside and was told to simply put the key in the drop box. When asked if I wanted a copy of the receipt of to have it emailed. I chose email. After several weeks I got a letter from Sedgwick Claims Management Service claiming I was responsible for damage to the vehicle. I informed them the agent refused to examine the vehicle when I picked it up and I had not damage the vehicle. I had purchased Car Rental Insurance from Allianz and advise them Sedgwick of the policy and supplied the photos taken when I picked up the car. Sedgwick filed a claim with my personal auto insurance. According to Sedgwick Budget Rental agreement states "Renter is responsible for the costs associated with the damage regardless of fault." The photos were not acknowledge. I had to file a claim with ALLLIANZ. They requested copies of the Rental Agreement. It was then that I realized Budget had not sent copies of the Rental Agreement via email. I called Budget and they offered to sent copies of the Agreement. The copies never arrived. The Adjuster from my personal auto insurance was provided copies that I in turn submitted to Allianz BEWARE...BUDGET DOES NOT CLAIM ANY RESPONSIBILITY EVEN THOUGH THEIR AGENT REFUSED TO SURVEY THE VEHICLE WHEN I PICKED IT UP.

I went to the closest Hertz office where I was and they told me that they don't change the oil on the cars on schedule they let it go double the length. Then the people at the office they do not want to replace the car for me. They told me incorrectly that I had to go back to the place where I rented the car which was 400 miles away. I looked on the website and their website clearly says you can do these exchanges at any Hertz location. When I brought that up to them. They acted like oh yes, of course that's what it means. I caught them lying and when they did finally relent and give me a car, it smelled like an ashtray had no gas in it and was filthy. We got through our trip and that was fine, but I will not be renting from Hertz again.

Despite making a reservation for a specific time, both visits made me wait over an hour just to get a car. The vehicles they provided were dirty, poorly maintained, and had issues like worn-out tires and empty washer fluid. On my second rental, I specifically reserved a Tesla. Even though there were 2-3 Teslas visibly available, they refused to give me one and handed me a different electric car instead. If they can't honor the reservation, why even allow customers to book that model in the first place? Do yourself a favor, if you can rent with another company, just do it! I won't be renting from this location again, and I hope others avoid the hassle I went through.

I was supposed to pick up the car in at 12pm on May 16, 2026. I had to move from Berkeley to Los Angeles to I needed a mini-van. That's the entire reason I reserved this van several months in advance. Guess what. The very night before I was supposed to pick up my car, someone from this Avis Berkeley location named Wayne left me a voicemail. He didn't even have the decency to call me, he just sent me a voicemail that says that they were going to unilaterally cancel my reservation the night before because they didn't have the mini-van. Unprofessional and ridiculous. Guess what. May 16 is graduation weekend for many schools in the Bay Area, so everything is sold out, so I had to get to the airport and end up paying 3X the cost for a last minute rental because of these guys. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS LOCATION UNLESS YOU WANT TO RISK THE RESERVATION BEING CANCELLED LAST SECOND. Lousy business practices.
